Brat Rescue and Transport; How they really treat rescues

Basenji Talk

  • @westcoastflea1 “Perfectly reasonable. The real problem here is you have the dog and want to override BRAT to do things your own way.
The sentence you seemed to have overlooked is this Repeated test for the Cushings are not to be done.Standard protocol for all cushings dog is to monitor (cushings every 3 months)**
You call a ban on monitoring perfectly reasonable. not surprised at all”

Where did you get that from?

“Most veterinarians treat both adrenal- and pituitary-dependent Cushing's disease with medication. The only way to "cure" Cushing's disease is to remove the adrenal tumor if the disease is adrenal-dependent and the tumor hasn't spread, says Stohlman. However, because of the complexity and risks of the surgery, most cases are treated with medication. Surgical techniques to remove pituitary tumors in dogs are being studied, but surgery is not a widely available option.

Although Cushing's is typically a lifelong condition, the disease usually can be managed with medications. "It's important for a veterinarian to see the dog regularly and do blood tests," Stohlman says. "Monitoring blood tests and response to treatment help determine the right dose, which may need to be adjusted periodically."

Frequent blood tests and veterinary checkups are usually required in the first few months after starting treatment and then every few months after that, depending on the dog's response to treatment and tolerance to the medication.”

Nowhere do I see every three months as the standard protocol. However, if your vet recommends it I am sure you could ask BRAT to cover it. As you have now deleted most of your posts, it’s once again pointless to discuss. However, the part you missed “The new vet should communicate with BRaT regarding his care before any decisions are made.” should be clear enough for anyone.

Again, your demands are unreasonable. BRAT is accountable for the money they spend on care. As you are obtaining care from them for your dog, you should be both compliant and diligent in following whatever guidelines they set. It really is that simple.

Being brutally honest here, as is my usual way. It seems you genuinely love the dog and are very attached to him. I know full well the intensity of looking after a sick basenji. However, I also know that it is important to maintain logic and reason. Running on feelings can cloud you into making a mistake that can potentially shorten his life. What you are doing is expecting others to give you a blank check without following their advice or obtaining their consent. That is unreasonable.

As others have advised, set up a go fund or such, if it works, then adopt the dog and you are in control of the decisions.

  • @westcoastflea1 “Not my dog, I became a foster because I knew i did not have the financial means to adopt.”

Great, so you decided to get all the benefits of the dog with none of the costs. Yet that strikes you as perfectly ethical.

“I Take declan in, vet finds an ear infection and before he can make any decisions the vet has to contact Brat?”

Correct, as it should be. You are not the dog owner, nor paying for treatment. BRATs responsibility is to respond promptly.

“if someone tells me, based on false or dated information, what will happen to Declan, I'm supposed to be compliant?
    Compliant?
gimme a break. I do not comply with any direction from anyone that may harm Declan. Perhaps you would”

By your own admission, you are happy to take money for the care of the dog for eight years and now demand that BRAT do as you wish. Frankly, it’s disgusting and there should be a contract which allows BRAT to take the dog back. If what you say is true, then you are already in breach of that contract.

“what kind of responsible pet owner relies on something like Go fund me to care for a Cushings dog?”

What kind of responsible owner or foster, takes on the responsibility of a dog for eight years while expecting to take on no financial responsibility. Then lies and tries to throw dirt at the very charity who has paid their bills for eight years?

I can only imagine that you are a troll, they frequent here from time to time. Nobody else could honestly be so absurd. Hopefully Royal Canin will track you down and sue you so hard you bounce.

@dagodingo As I have deleted my posts I'm surprised to see you haven't deleted your own. I deleted mine, yet you have not deleted yours
    Just a suggestion.

Why did you delete your posts @westcoastflea1 ? I never delete mine, and see no reason to.

  • @westcoastflea1 Like is said, a troll. You are a liar and delusional. As I said, I hope RC track you down and sue you so hard you bounce. BRAT obviously need to vet their fosters better. Given your statements, BRAT should take the dog back immediately and find him a responsible foster.

“They will take Declan citing negligence” Let’s hope so. Now you claim you have had the dog for ten years.

“It is clear that you have no grasp of the facts read a label honey you want to feed your child powdered cellulose, chicken meal corn meal corn grits rice powder and wheat gluten and call it healthy? be my guest. Royal canine is the one that makes these recipes and calls them healthy”

The food is made to help reduce the weight of overweight dogs. Not all powdered cellulose comes from wood. Far from your claim that “they want me to feed Declan sawdust”.
The statements that RC is sawdust is irrefutably false. What is not healthy is over feeding your dog until they are 20lbs overweight.

Done with you, keep posting your lies and then deleting them all you want.

  • None of this is useful in terms of helping the dog. Maybe just let it go and concentrate on whatever action may produce positive results? A "go fund me" might be helpful. Any other suggestions someone might offer that I haven't thought of might be helpful. Venting has a place, but repeating the same arguments over and over won't accomplish anything except to feed anger.

Nicely done. And I totally agree - those that work on behalf of BRAT are angels in my mind.

Cody will actually eat lettuce and will often beg the leftover from my salad. He snarfs down the lettuce carrot peas or whatever else is leftover. Totally freaked out my friend who was keeping him while I was away b/c she was eating a salad and he was begging. When she gave him a piece of lettuce he ate it and begged for more. She actually called me on my cell to make sure it was ok. :) He prefers ranch dressing. Thank you very much!

Last week I tried this frozen treat idea with my 4 and they loved it. Tools: Ziploc Bag. Water. Goodies. (For medium to large dogs) Take a ziplock bag, toss in a few goodies such as 2 baby carrots, small pieces of some pupperoni, a couple table spoons of wet dog food, a few kibbles of dry dog food or other treats that they like. (Just a dab will do ya) Then add in some water. You can also add a little bit of Tang or Crystal Light sometimes. To keep variety some days fill it with a lot of water (make a big block) some days just add a cup or two. When you fill 1/2 a bag or less you can place it different ways in the freezer so it makes different shapes once it freezes. This should be ice they have to get through to get the treats, not just a bag of frozen treats. You can also toss in a Nylabone or other toys that can handle being frozen. You can also use a cheap plastic food dish and place a toy or treats in there and freeze. Takes longer for them to get the goodies out since the bowl blocks access to all the sides. For smaller dogs just add less treats and water. For small animals use an ice cube tray and toss in a treat or two per cube. Don't forget just tossing some ice in the water bowl is also entertaining! This can get messy so please be aware of the fact that ice melts if you have carpets. This is better for floors you can clean easily or outdoors.

I too am a proud owner of a rescue basenji! I stumbled across his picture on petfinder one day and said to my boyfriend Brian there is a basenji at Pet Orphans (all breed rescue in Van Nuys)! So we went over for a visit and he looked a little ruff on the edges under weight, dull coat, a little dandruff, puppymill"ish looking and about two years old. I was a little apprehensive at first, Brian on the other hand feel in love the first second. He said to me I have had basenjis for years now and I know this one is special. We took the little guy home and the rescue was hassle free we didnt have to deal with twenty million questions or home checks it was great. I beleve there is a basenji lover working there because after I have noticed they have had a few other pure B's and cute B mixes. We knew we were in love with how cute he was but we never imagined how well behaved, sweet, and easy going this little dog turned out to be. From the B's that have been in the family, one from a pet store, two from breeders, and our rescue the rescue has been the best behaved, best temperment, and the most well rounded out of them all. Everyday He puts a smile on my face and joy in my heart. I love my rescue.

Sanitized bone should be fine… however like you said, these days I would not trust the "goo"... .... especially now that they have found that for many of the foods that "claimed" they didn't have rice, wheat, corn as the protein source, they really did.... or on the package it was listed as "protein source" that turned to be one of the above glutens...
