Hidding treats

Basenji Talk

  • I found an old bully stick in the bottom of the treat box so I gave it to EL D this morning (he doesn't usually get those cause they make his breath stink). He happily chewed on it for an hour and then, because it is rainy and wet outside, tried to bury it in the house. First he buried it in one of his beds under the old blanket I had given him - but because he was standing on the blanket he couldn't get the blanket to cover it :p . So then he tried to bury it behind a piece of furniture - but then he caught me watching him so he slunk away with it. Next thing I hear he's trying to bury it in the couch (luckily just between cushions and not in the cushions :o ). So now he takes a nap for about 1 minute and then goes hunting for his treat. This went on for some time, he'd try to bury the thing - behind a couple of boxes, in the floor heating vent, under a chair - then nap for a minute or two on the bed. It was really hysterical watching him (from around a corner of course) :D

  • How cute that he feared you were watching! As if you were going to go snap that thing up for yourself, LOL.

My Basenjis don't hide their treats, they work at them until they are finished no matter how long it takes. I think it's the fear that the other will get it.

Gypsy USED to hide her treats…..until the Basenjis moved in. Now she either finishes them or carries them around in her mouth until I notice and take them away to put in a safe place for her.

  • Oh how lucky you are! Trixie hides everything on my hubby's bed and mine! Bully sticks, pig snouts you name it. And not just on the bed but often behind our pillows! Gross!!!!! Ha Ha

@helle-devi I notified BRAT shortly after "Heather" started the rant. I was concerned about several points (administering/adjusting med dosage without Vet approval/advice, ignoring Vet advice, and on and on). They called an emergency board meeting and took prompt action. Unfortunately, legal processes take time. All the while, Heather continued her rant. And more astonishing details were revealed. By the time Heather sent her first (wall of text itself) post, BRAT had already sent Heather an email explaining that they were reclaiming "Declan". Indicating that BRAT was already aware that things had gotten out of hand. I think Heather was a good "foster Mom" when she first started doing it. But something ... somewhere along the line ... started unraveling for her. I don't wish her any ill will. I do hope that she finds her way back. But I still think removing Declan from her home was "for the best". sigh (note: I do not know if Declan is still with her or not, Heather might have actually signed that agreement, but I doubt it.)

I got my dehydrator at a farm & fleet store for about $50. It is basic but has temperature. I make a lot of jerky now. It is really easy. Beef jerky from ground beef is my favorite. I can make sticks of it which can be broken or cut up easily into training treat sized pieces. I highly recommend getting one. Plus you can use it too.

If the dogs are having similar symptoms as in the previous years, they need to be treated ASAP! It is my understanding that many are developing the acquired Fanconi Syndrome and need to be put on the protocol. Many vets though do not have the equipment to do the venous blood gas test and get an accurate diagnosis. Emergency vets should have the equipment. Do not buy any dog treats that come from China and if the package does not state where it is from then do not buy it! Jennifer

Wyatt will ignore all of his toys for a small water bottle with rocks in it. I wish I would have known that before I bought a bunch of toys for him. :o

Sanitized bone should be fine… however like you said, these days I would not trust the "goo"... .... especially now that they have found that for many of the foods that "claimed" they didn't have rice, wheat, corn as the protein source, they really did.... or on the package it was listed as "protein source" that turned to be one of the above glutens...
