Oldest basenji?

Basenji Talk
  • @tanza:

OMG…. are these my old friends that I have not seen in ages???? So glad to hear that Hafta is still going... at 18.... my goodness.... that is super!!! My C-Me (Ch Klassic-Tanza Color Me Tri) goes back to Hafta!!!! Check out her pedigree at Sally Wallis site!

Hellllooo Pat! Yes, it has been a long, long, time. I think 'Hafta would have been better had I not left California for work last summer. I was out of a job her so I went to Michigan for a job. I lasted 3 months and Susan called me telling me 'Hafta is about to die and I had better return home. She quit eating because she decided I left her and was not coming back. I got home and force fed her because I was not going to let her die. She was in great health before I left. Now, she is only in fair health, but at least she isn't dead. We finally lost my Lu to Fanconi about 3 or 4 years ago. It was a horrible death for her. I don't wish that on anybody. She and I were so close she now sits by my bed in a little box. :)

How is your other half, Ted doing? And I haven't forgotten Maggii. She was a great, beautiful little dog. My C-Me is terrific looking as well. Forgive me, but I forget your other dogs names it has been so long. Tell the Leighton's hello for us and Parry and is it Ken also? We haven't forgotten them either. We both enjoyed going up to Northern California and the hospitality. We couldn't drive fast enough to get there when we would go. I miss going up there.

When we are ready for a replacement, we know where to go. We miss all of you up there.

  • It is so great to hear from you, Ted is great… send me a private email at tanzab@aol.com so we don't keep "hi-jacking" this thread and I will fill you in on many details of everyone up hear. Great to hear from you and hugs to Susan!

  • I remember Hafta as some of our dogs coursed with her back in the day. She was an excellent courser! Perhaps lure coursers tend to live longer as our dogs were around the same age and they have just passed within the last year or two. I was thinking of Merlin, GiGi, and Glory Be.

  • @dreyer63:

He still opens the fridge and helps himself to anything left on the bottom shelf .Sence the glucosmine he is getting to the second and onto the first shelf where all the good left overs are hunted .

This is SO basenji! They are just too smart! :)

  • My Baby lived to 16 years old and if she wouldnt have a stroke I think she had a couple more years in her

  • Our Basenji, Nosey will be 12 on December 31st. We had a black and white boy, Bret, who passed at 14 years. And another who went far too soon at only 5 years.
It is so hard to think of life with out my baby. So I enjoy every minute of the time we have together. We are bringing in a new puppy in to the family. He needs a companion :)

  • My Basenji Cassanova turns 17th Years old .. He is ok but he barely stand up and doesn't do his needs by his own, but it's ok.. I help him with love.. I am so afraid that his time is coming so soon.. I am not ready![alt text](!

  • Our B girl Sophie turned 14 in Nov. People always ask if she's a puppy. She still jumps up on the back of the couch to sleep in her favourite spot. No signs of her slowing down!

  • @dcmclcm4

Probiotics may help her to digest her food better. Bless you for caring for both.

  • This thread started Dec 2011. Wondering ages now. We lost Arwen at 12. Cara is 9, looks half her age.

  • I lost my purebred Basenji, Tara, at age 17 1/2, which was remarkable because she had a lot of health concerns but stilled lived a long life! My other 2, I lost at age 13 (one I lost just this past Friday 😪).

  • I've lost 17 year olds, 16 year olds and have bred and sold pups which lived as long. The last two to cross the Bridge were 17.5 and 16.5. I've always said if reincarnation exists I want to come back as a Basenji owned by me !

  • @ginnyc
My deepest condolences. So sorry for your loss.

  • My Skeeter is 17 years 2 and 1/2 months old. I have had her since she was 2 months old. She has gotten so skinny and is frail but she still eats and drinks and lets me know when she needs to go out. I have to keep her on a leash now because she tends to take off and we live out in the country but the other day she went down our driveway and out onto the gravel road. I'm not sure she knows where she is any more but she does find her way back. She can't see very well but her hearing is still pretty good, She always did have selective hearing. She has been a treasure and I love her dearly. I know she can't be here much longer and my goal is to keep her as comfortable as possible. She doesn't exhibit any signs of being in any kind of pain. It is my constant prayer that she will just slip away in her sleep and I won't have to make the decision to put her down. She was very sick 3 years ago and was diagnosed with a brain tumor and kidney failure but on the advice of a friend, I stopped any food or treat that had red dye in it and she stopped having seizures immediately and hasn't had one since.

  • My buddy, Kenji, just passed today. He was just a tad over 17.5 years old.

  • Lucky boy, to have enjoyed your company for so many years. Its never easy and the older they get, the more difficult it is to say goodbye - especially to such a gallant old gentleman. Hang in there -

  • Thank you. It definitely has been tough. Coming home from work, not seeing him and knowing that I won’t be seeing him anymore is rough. He’s been very good to me. A handful, but very good. I’d definitely get another Basenji one day

  • I am sorry. As long as they still happy. It
    still isnt enough

  • Sonic is 14 yrs old

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

@Mantis: can you guys post pictures of your elder basenjis…. how many dog year vs. human years? 7 That cant be the same ages for basenjis....Maggii would be 112 years old. Let's try 5-6years for every human year? That would make Maggii 85-102yrs old? Does that sound right? Maggii is my avtar (the red and white) Mickii the tri is 14 1/2… I will post some pictures later...
