Everyone needs to talk about a spay/neuter... while in Europe it is not the "norm" to do so... however in the US it is.... that said waiting till the pup is mature is the best... but in the US we have issues with puppymills and Backyard breeders that breed/sell pups for profit... My contracts say that the pup needs to be spayed/neutered... and we talk about the age. Again, I will say that my puppy people are "Vetted" before getting a puppy, but many Puppymiller puppies and/or Backyard Breeders could not care if those pups were bred or not... nor are they health tested... so as they say "buyer beware". Responsible breeders stay in touch with the pups they place... the others... NOT... could not care less... OK I said my 2cents... And many in the US are not ready to keep a female that is in season... a short story about a friend that had 2 German Shepards... Male/Female in tact.... female came in season, so they locked to male in the backyard, female in their garage... the male "ate down the door to the garage to get to the female..".... puppies happened... no health testing either... IT HAPPENS... DO NOT THINK THAT IT WILL NOT! And I can tell you stories about males coming through windows in the home to get to a bitch in season....years ago we had a 12yr in-tact male lab 3 blocks over, he knew exactly when my Basenji bitches were in season... thankfully we had 12ft fences... but he was there every single day... not so for many homes that have fences this big... and if this boy was younger... I can bet he would have found a way over the fence
Bringing home our B 3/9/2012

Any tips to a brand new B owner on what to do/expect the first few days after bringing our boy home?
I have owned two shar peis in the past and a pug. I've researched Basenjis for a while and thought my chance was over for the year since most pups are already spoken for by now, but came across a breeder that had two males left, and we'll be picking our guy up in march. New apartment 3/1 and new pup 3/9. Very excited!

Sleep next to him when he is in his crate at night. It stops the whining and you are close in case of emergency (pee etc.)
After two nights, Lela was OK in her crate. If the crate is a bit too big for him, make it smaller with towels and stuff in the back - it prevents him from peeing in the back of the crate and lying in the front.
Also: lots of chew things, and a box https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/U5c7mOnK3s6A8qP-vTQT2HrGRxKRBlxRdIRaipILZSc?feat=directlink
We put all her toys in the box, she would take them out in the morning, which was so tiring that she made it her bed…
B's love to be hugged and held and lie in your lap. -
Who are you getting your baby boy from? Many of us are related by our Basenjis.
-
you'll need patience, a sense of humor and lots of alcohol!!!!

We got ours from Jennifer at All Paws Pet retreat in Panama City, Fl so we're travelling 5 hours to get him.
We decided to name him Orion.
And as for the sense of humor and alcohol.. living in new orleans, we've got plenty of that!

6 days to go.. i'm too excited for words

What a sweet looking pup!

What a lovely boy! I'd also add, start training early. Call him to you for his meals, or just throughout the day, and always reward him with a little treat. The earlier you start, the easier it gets!
-
Was he (or his Sire and Dam) been tested for Fanconi?
-
he's here!!
Orion is his name. first night when smoothly! but he likes following momma around a lot
-
both were tested and clear pr. the website
turns out he's pick of the litter
-
He's beautiful!

He's adorable. My boy came from a great breeder by I still ordered the cheek swab kit to be doubly sure. I'd recommend you do the same. Even with paperwork I never wanted to rely on others, my boy is my baby and I treat him as such.
Congratulations, take lots of pictures as thu grow so fast!!!
I have a soft spot for black and Whites after getting Oakley -
I absolutely cannot resist litte pink puppy toes! very cute
-
Handsome little boy, enjoy, also love the little pink toes, my Kaiser has tough feet now miss his soft baby feet.

Not familar with where he came from. What are the registered names of his sire and dam, if you don't mind sharing? Very cute, glad to hear that the first night went well

well someone(my SO) cleaned out the car so the paper with the names on it got chucked out. I am waiting for the breeder to re-send it.
I know his sire is from Mibre's basenjis in homestead, fl.
and will be happy to post the names once I get them again
