Hello- I am a volunteer with a Basenji Rescue group. As part of our yearly conference and meeting, we have speakers and informational sessions. We are holding this year's convention in Syracuse, NY in mid June. We would like to have a speaker address geriatric issues. There have also been many requests for a behaviorist.

I am hoping someone here will know of someone who would be qualified and interested in speaking to a group of Basenji owners (and basenjis) about either of these topics.

Wow, I'm afraid that's pretty overwhelming to deal with and like eeeefarm said, no way on earth to do it in a week. However, you do need to begin working on it soon and plan on a very long time to turn this around. Because this dog has shown he will grown and try to bite, your risk of him actually biting, and your legal liability are huge.

If you can buy or borrow a secure crate (they aren't cheap) that he can't get out of or hurt himself in, do so. If you can't, do what eeefarm suggested, and make darn sure that leash and collar are totally secure.

Once your nephew has left, please get a trainer to start working with your family and this dog on both children and crating. They are very important and it can be overcome.

Hello all….My beloved pooch passed away six months ago and I am starting my journey to find a new best friend. After much research, I have decided a Basenji is the dog for me. That said, I am trying to locate Basenji owners in Tampa. Before taking the plunge, I would like to talk with local owners and meet their dogs. They are certainly not a common pet and I would like to meet one(or more) to see just how they are in person. Are there any Basenji owners out there in Tampa? I would be great to hear from you.

That is great…. we always suggest meeting with Basenjis and Basenji Owners before deciding this is the right breed of dog for your new forever companion!!! Good luck in your search.

How should you allow dogs to "meet"?? Neutral territory or in a home?? Should you use a gate in between first? Or just on leash??

I agree neutral territory is best - not in one or the other's home. if you must - do it outside. as for a meet & greet routine, I allow "first name, last name"

first name = head or nose sniff.
last name = toosh sniff.

I let my dog meet & greet on leash, so I can correct any bad behavior. if all goes well, I let them play in a safe area (fenced or in house) and let them sort things out - supervised of course, incase a serious fight breaks out - but that hasn't happened (yet… knocks on wood).
