Collecting the Mail

Basenji Talk
  • Do anyone else's basenji's do this?

I just had a leaflet put through the door and Maya grabbed it and brought it right up to me and dropped it on my lap  She has NEVER done this before, she just ignores the mail usually. How cute is little Maya? :D

Maybe i can teach her to vaccuum and wash up ;)

  • She is one smart girl..Otis will go get the mail too…only to tear it up of course..but hey at least he got it..ggrr..

  • Oh, naughty Otis!! Maya has always been really good about not shredding the mail, that would annoy me! Hopefully her new "talent" wont lead to that lol

  • My first Basenji used to hate the mailman. The mail box was on the right side of the garage door and she used to jump up aggressively at the box banging against the door when he would put the mail through. It was the old type door with big springs that you lifted up in the early 70s. One day I heard this big BOOM! I went out in the garage and she banged it pretty hard and the door flew open (2 car garage door). She was standing there right in the mailman's face and he was frozen until I could pick her up.

  • Poor mail man!!

I think Maya has watched Riley do it as i occassionally used try to get him to collect the mail if it falls on the floor and bring to me. Most of the time he couldnt work out what i was asking! But sometimes he did. I've not done it for months but maybe she saw that and she was copying?

Well isn't she a sassy little thing? Thanks so much for the information. I had not heard of this one at all. I will Google it to get more info and find where to purchase! Deb

Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

Ah ok cool thanks, I had something like that when Safi was smaller and it was the most successful for sure. She outgrew it quite quickly though

I can't listen to that, it would wake my girl up and well... I'm not into a "sing along" just now. ;) I will say that many canines howl and yodel and bay (at the moon, whenever a fire truck passes, etc.). I'm not certain that any one breed is distinctive enough to have a sound all their own, but many a proud owner would probably assert so.

We use ones from Rukka. Not sure if they’re available everywhere but they are they best ones we have tried (others always fell off, especially in deep snow). I think having two Velcro closures on each sock has been key. I also prefer the soft shell ones as our B seems to accept them more and they don’t twist as much as the ones with a hard sole. Here are the ones I am referring to: https://rukkapets.com/paw-wear/thermal-shoes-black

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.
