Sounds quite the opposite… he obviously wanted to be friends with the kitty! He was just overly enthusiastic about it, and maybe went about it the wrong way :D

@Patty: I would think that some Basenjis have a stronger hunting instinct than others. I have had Basenjis innocently free roaming among sheep and others that would immdiately go in to kill. Exactly. When we had only Jazzy, she lived in relative peace with our cats. They weren't friends or friendly, but she didn't chase them much and when she did it was without much enthusiasm. Then we got Keoki and everything changed. I know I've talked about him before – he broke three baby gates in his efforts to get at our cats. We've tried various things to bring them together peacefully -- crating the dog, crating the cats, slow introductions, etc. -- and nothing has been remotely helpful. It's been three years. So, now the cats live upstairs -- which is bigger than the downstairs and where the kids spend the bulk of their afternoons and all night -- and the Basenjis live downstairs. I should add, the cats have never been the problem. They have both lived in peace and friendship -- sleeping together etc -- with our dogs in the past. Neither one had ever been chased by a dog, Until Jazz, whom as I said did okay with them, but they were never friends as they'd always been with our other dogs. And Keoki....forget about it.

I read August Magic and was crying on page 2. But it is a great story. Anyone with a basenji (or any dog) will love it. You can also buy the cutest basenji plush toy from the website. Great gift. http://www.basenjimagic.com/plush.htm

Haley used to do this also! She REALLY didn't like me to leave her home alone and would not eat anything - even her favorite treat - while I was gone. Then as soon as I got home she'd run and get the treat from the very spot I left it and devour it. This all came to a screeeeetching halt when we got our BRAT dog, Prince. Now Haley (who used to be finicky) has to eat everything FAST and IMMEDIATELY so that Prince doesn't get it! She's always afraid he's going to get something she doesn't get, so at meal times she has to check his bowl out first…before eating from her own bowl. Of course, if he tried checking HER bowl out he'd get his face bitten off!!!! All of the individual personalities crack me up!

, even the strange voices seem to appear in many pariah type dogs. I can so see that, Moses, our almost 9 month old portuguese podengo grande sounds just like a howlling, yodeling basenji at times, then he breaks into this excruciatingly loud bark..

If possible have Sonny meet the potential roommate on neutral ground, a walk together in a park or a small dog park. They may not be "love at first sight" but if they don't hate each other, and play a little, they will probably be OK. A pair of neutered boys can be best buddies, male/female pairs sometimes bond very closely and sometimes not so much, keep an open mind for a good personality match and you will love what you get, and so will Sonny! Good luck! Nothing like getting your dog a dog! Nicky is Topper's dog, and Eddie is hers.

Too many miles and trips with our last Basenji to list them all. The longest was 128 in 28 days. So far all great tips. One that I might add is if you are going to tie them out a little bit of bunjee cord on the tie out just in case they decide to try to chase something when not looking. Save them a sore neck.

@wizard: At least take comfort in the fact that it will melt soon - not like our snow here in Minnesota (-2F this morning) - but then of course you'll get floods. Hoo boy! Well at least I know where I'm never moving lol. I'm a S California Girl and man I hate being cold. Give me 95 degree weather (minus the humidity here) over snow any time and you can throw in the earthquakes too lol.

There are products that when pointed at a dog give off a sound which firghtens them off! One I know of is called a 'Dazer' an electronic device which gives an ultrasonic sound that dogs can hear. I haven't seen them advertised for some time, I must admit! I had to use one years ago when a neighbour used to 'set' her dogs (Deerhounds) at mine when we walked past - it was very effective and possibly a bit cruel for the hearing but it was either them or mine.

Hah! Basenji500 - I love it! Paco's been doing it ever since we got him, I just didn't know it had a name. :P Our apartment is built like a train, just one long line of rooms, so he loves to fly up and down, jumping off furniture the whole way. We ran a cable between two trees in our long driveway, and use a d-link to attach an extendable leash to it so that we can play fetch outside whenever he gets a little to antsy.

sinbaje, this is why I appealed to the forum. I knew there'd be several smarter and/or more knowledgable people able to help me. The whole genetics thing is still way over my head, so I hadn't thought that Lola's mom COULDN'T be behind Booger (although yodeldogs may have explained this to me a dozen times and it didn't sink in yet)… Lola's mom was brindle I think. I know I was shown a picture of a brindle that was one of her parents anyway. The breeder's name is Carrie from what I remember. Her son's name is Destin Brown, and that's what her dogs are currently registered under (or Booger's & Lola's litters were anyway). She lived in Calhoun, GA (for all I know she's still there, but it seems she sold all of her basenjis after I explained Fanconi to her), and I know her sister helped her raise litters at her own house as well, so her sister might be named Tammy.

@AJs: It all seems very interesting to me…until I got to the ridiculous "carbon offset" nonsense. Just another tax. That's all it is. I hope the trip is successful. +1…I agree re: the purchase of carbon offsets.

Abbey was almost banned from my son's house after she killed the cat's feather on a stick thingy. We don't have our own cat although she'd like to have one of her own. She loves cats!
