hopefully Dex is just teething. I worked very hard to keep toy-drive in Zest as it can make training easier and more fun. And she still often gets a treat for retrieving or tugging her toys.

I have used Nick Russell's collars for many years and they do not wear out. I have never had even the most wily basenji slip out of one and escape. And he will custom-make them for you if you send your ribbon to him. We are lucky that so many good products are available, everyone is bound to find something to fit your needs.

Lovely photos! your b's are gorgeous! Re: food….. after working in a dog grooming business, i must say i am amazed at the amount of people that come in with their overweight fluffies (i call them fluffies as its usually the maltese X's and shihtzus etc) that have no idea that... human food shouldnt be their diet! or what they feeding them is wrong and i dont know how many times we've tried explaining to either cut back or go on the proper food and they dont understand?! i dont understand how people can have such a hard time understanding food/nutrition for their dogs. I understand there are many different way etc which is all fine, but as long as its in the right moderation and its nothing ridiculas (such as a vegatarian diet.....deadly serious.... its like c'mon luv, they are carnivores...) anyways thats my rant :D

Hello Linda, was cruising through the Forum and here you are! Congrats on the new home. In case you don't remember me, I was looking for a B and you somehow responded then we spoke of the Rainbow Bridge…. I invited you to hook up your RV if you were ever in Fl. Anyway, the new boy I adopted is a Tri-and I noticed his left front leg is white just like Maxx's in his photos! Just too funny to see this! I just wanted to add as well, that if anyone in Fl has the need for an extended stay and cannot find a house sitter, I have boarded dogs in my 'front bedroom' that I dog proofed, and since I now have quite the friendly B, he would love to keep company with another I am sure! See my home page for an image since I cannot insert one in this Quick Reply!

@Moth: ? I am confused… I was talking about my basenji Watson. Who is very affectionate. I do not think anyone even mentioned birds. That message is more than likely a spam. They show up regularly on the forum. Just ignore them.

Speaking of computers and basenjis - Kipawa lays beside me and then tosses his head around and hits the 'delete' key with his nose!

Butu's very quiet, but the other day, we were walking past the church and a lady came out unexpectedly. Well, whatever my boy is, he's not a stoic, so he screamed. Wow, did she jump! I apologised but mentioned, to be fair, that Butu had been startled too. Got one of the nastiest looks I've evr seen ;-)

I agree, bribing is good. Over the years I have developed a personal relationship with my vets and their staff. Office manager is on my facebook (rare if you know me because I have under 90 friends … mostly family, close friends and their kids and friends of my daughter. I keep it limited to provide those kids the most protection and to keep it personal). I never worry about the care my dogs get anyway, but I know the gifts I bring at Christmas to the staff and occasional treats lets them know they are appreciated.

It definitely felt like I aged 10 years in a few minutes this am. I must have looked like a complete crazy person. My neighbors don't know me because I moved up here mid-winter, and only recently has it warmed up enough for chance encounters with neighbors outside. I went running outside at 10:30 am with 2 leashes, 1 dog, a sample bag of cat food, wearing Christmas themed pj pants, a bright yellow Georgia Tech hoodie sweatshirt, no glasses so i can't see, randomly shouting "HAVE YOU SEEN A LITTLE DOG RUNNING AROUND!" at my neighbors. Both of my girls are microchipped. I know there is a lot of debate about collars. I fear, especially with the martingale style, that mine will strangle themselves if they get caught on something when I'm not around. In this case, I'm glad Callie didn't have a collar on because the rungs on the porch are so close together, she may have caught the collar without realizing it & jumped & hung herself. I do worry that they will get out & somebody will find them but not know to check for a microchip, but even dogs with collars can lose them while running around loose. So I don't think there is a right or wrong answer for when to collar them. Mine don't usually dart out of doors, so I don't worry about it too often. As for the porch; that will not be accessible to them if I can not supervise them from now on. Fortunately I will only be here for a couple more weeks, so I won't worry about adding chicken wire or anything. I'm already saving up for a basenji proof fence for the new house though. Callie is quite the escape artist when she has motivation (clearly!)

@nobarkus: We make jokes about our Bs snoring but it's actually not a good thing. He may have allergies to something in his diet. Did you change it lately? No I have had him on the same dog food for 2 yrs. I cant think of what he'd be allergic to….hmmm...

i've tried antlers as well. suki chews on them sometimes - doesn't like them nearly as much as a bully stick or a nylabone (or rawhide). they don't splinter or break off, though, and they don't smell, so they are worth having around for the once in a while that she likes them.

Pat said I gave INACCURATE information. Pat implied I said it was a genetic test. Both are incorrect. Had she suggested I simply say it isn't perfect, that would be fine. She didn't. And flawed doesn't mean "you can't put ANY faith in the test." Anyone stretching "flawed" to that extreme is simply looking for an excuse. But it is flawed in that it has not fully found which markers actually indicate for sure. It is flawed in that there are sometimes mess ups with the handling and hence done incorrectly (as is with ANY test). It is flawed in that it is a best we have but far from perfect and still being refined. However, I absolutely believe that it is the best tool we have, a darned good one, and not using it is simply irresponsible for breeders. But it is also irresponsible to not say do the test, keep on strip testing, because it is not perfect. As for Dr Gonto and when to begin, I can almost guarantee you he'd agree that while you should begin at LEAST by 3, the earlier the better. His protocol, 2003, says earliest is 3 yrs. But the Basenji health says 1.5 yrs old. Cara is only a year, already doing them. I'd hate for her to have it and me wait many many months til she turns 3 to catch it, or catch it because symptoms occur. Yeah I know… if it happens it usually happens to my dogs so I just feel better testing earlier, not later.
