It is not true that all puppymill pups go to petstores. If the USDA breeder is unable to sell all their pups to the dealer/broker due to a lack of demand or a defect where the dealer does not accept them, the breeder will sell online either on a site like puppyfind.com or its own website. If the breeder/dealer does not want to sell their pups via the internet, they can sell them at a dog auction. Here is the biggest dog auction http://www.swkennelauction.com/ and the other one is http://heartlandsale.com/index.html Heartland Sales usually has a lot of older pups for sale as compared to breeding dogs. SW Kennel Auction has been having a lot of dispersal sales this fall season. SW Kennel Auction is weekly from early September to early June and Heartland Sales is about once a month, I believe year round. The best thing to do is to look up the breeder name on the USDA website and see if they are USDA licensed. The breeder could be either licensed as a breeder or a dealer. A dealer can be a breeder who can sell their own pups to a petstore or another breeder's pups to a petstore. The largest USDA dealer is The Hunte Corp. who sells the majority of pets to petstores. A rescue dog is so rewarding and an adult especially if housebroken is sooo much easier than a pup. Submit an application as soon as possible to be sure you are approved. If approved, you'll be ready when you see the dog you want online.

Hi Patty, Linda own's both Rosie's sire and dam. However, I am the cobreeder, and I was there for her dam's birth, shepherded her to her reproductive vet appointments, and I own Rosie's aunt and great uncle. I participate con several other basenji lists that were active long before this forum so that usually takes up all my free posting time. :p. I currently have a pack of four, including Rosie's brother Ra. My oldest dog Nut is not a basenji, but was adopted as a rescue and was a lonely 9 month old only dog until she was six months old and Rosie's great uncle Khonsu came home as a nine week old puppy. They got along beautifully, and still do. Three years later, Khonsu's niece and Rosie's aunt Jane camecto live with us. While she was still a puppy, she and Nut got along, but once she matured the household tension started. They have had several blood letting fights, and I'veclearned how to manage the household without running two packs, but it is NOT easy, and I cannot recommend it unless the people involved are completely dedicated to making it work. Where two or more boys can get along, often two bitches are not a good pairing; they can really hold a grudge. Breaking up a dog fight is no fun, and I've got the scars to prove it. If Greg and Lisa want a companion for Rosie, I'm all for it when she gets to be 6 months to a year old. Then she will have bonded well with everyone in their family, and will be less likely to bond more with another dog than with the humans. She will be approaching adolescence, and they can do a better job of selecting a suitable lifetime companion for her and their family. Katy Scott

You may also want to look at the basenji rescue group out of Indianapolis- they may have some dogs looking for forever homes. Or you can go to www.allofcraigs.com, and put in basenji in the search field to start your own nationwide search. Keep in mind that many people found cute puppies 4 or 5 months ago and without researching the breed, bought the puppy in the window. At this point, these families are exhausted and frustrated and sick of their bathroom trash being scattered endlessly around the home! :) Perhaps they didn't read their contract, or they bought their pup from a back yard breeder or pet store and didn't have a contract. Those pups are looking for a home, and if you have the patience to help these pups, they will love you forever! (P.S. I found my Lola and Sophie on Craig's List, as did my sister with her boy from St Louis. ):)
