Basenjis For Sale or Wanted

@debradownsouth - Correct Debra, many breeders will say that and there is really nothing to stop them. However check out Sally's pedigree sight the only ones that are noted with the DNA results for Fanconi or PRA are the ones that were tested by OFA, not any of the ones noted as clear by parents. There is really nothing wrong with saying clear by parents but each breeder makes their own decision about this. For me, I would prefer to test.

@dagodingo - A very close friend told me after I lost one of my Basenji girls "you carry a piece of their soul in your heart forever"... I have always held on to that for all the Basenjis that I have watched cross the Rainbow Bridge

As noted by Debra, go to www.basenji.org and search for breeders. Most of the reputable breeders are listed here, but not all. Go to https://basenji.org/index.php/about-basenjis/is-a-basenji-right-for-me, there is a link about screening breeders. These are questions you should ask potential breeders. They should provide you with links the the OFA testing base. DNA testing for Fanconi and PRA are public knowledge. Here is an example of one of my listings on the OFA database.https://www.ofa.org/advanced-search?f=sr&appnum=1415062. For sure Fanconi DNA and PRA DNA must be done, but most responsible breeders also test for hips, thyroid, eyes... however, those results are not always posted a public. But if done, the breeder would have certificates of the testing. Breeders typically show their Basenjis... some do performance events. This activity shows not only the correct conformation (showing) but that and/or performance shows temperament. If you have other questions, please contact me. @debradownsouth I disagree about letting Bs pack with older dogs. I had my B for 16 years and she was trained by older well-trained dogs. They do model their behavior after the dogs because they want to be members of the Pack. I also had 2 Wolves and my B accepted them immediately. When I would walk the dog and the Wolf, the other dogs in the Park dragged their owners out of the Park. Canines, no matter the Breed, are terrified of Wolves. I have video of my B and my Wolf engaging in mutual grooming. Due to that I am convinced that the Basenji is related to the Ancient Wolves. If that were not the case my B would have been terrified just like the other Dogs in the Park. She adored her Wolves and grieved when they passed.

@debradownsouth He was Arrested and then he died. I will refrain from posting Horse related posts. You just did not believe me when I said Horses are taken to Great Adventure. Now regarding the Basenjis relation to Wolves: Mu dog loved the Wolves and when I would walk the Wolf and the Dog in the Park the Dogs there which included Rotties, Saint Bernards, Bull Mastiffs all pulled their owner out of the Park because Dogs instinctively fear Wolves. @giza1 that does sound like a scam but there are lots of actual dogs on Craigslist in need of a good home some people don’t want to place there dog in a shelter and hope to find someone who would give there a dog a good home. If someone is posting a dog on Craigslist they are most likely not worthy owners. So getting a dog from Craigslist u can look at as a rescue because you really are rescuing them from unfortunate circumstances.. I got extremely lucky in finding a 4 month basenji on Craigslist we drove to Philadelphia(not from same person) picked him up and has had no problems at all other then a food allergy. He was checked for Fanconi and we’ve done lots of tests to make sure he was ok with every possibility... even if he was terminally ill I would have rather picked him up and gave him the best years of his life as opposed to leaving him with the people who obviously could not take care of him and therefore posting him and litter mates on Craigslist. Always be careful when meeting someone on Craigslist though there’s lots of scams and bad people but there are also lots of real dogs in need of loving homes.

@giza1 Colorado is too far for me and I want to be able to pick up the Basenji instead of having someone else transport him/her. Thanks for the info though.

Camp Basenji in Florida started off as part of BRAT but split to become a separate rescue. At the time, BRAT not only didn't test for Fanconi, but refused to allow their rescues to be tested. I have the email to back it up. I begged to test the dam of a puppy I was adopting so we'd know if the whole litter was safe or at risk. They told me if I adopted her, I could do whatever I wanted, but otherwise they didn't want to know as it might make her unadoptable. I am happy they finally began testing, but my loyalty to Pam, who has done right every step, is unwavering. So please add Camp Basenji to your responsible list. She can be a total pain in the butt, but she's there for life 100% for her rescues. http://www.campbasenji.org

Go to www.basenji.org and you can search by breeders by state. Also www.basenjirescue.org

Even though breeders don't show on the on-line database, I do keep pretty full records, and by the way - please keep chasing people to send me litter data !

@elbrant - I would suggest that a better choice to find a responsible breeder is to go to the parent club for the Basenji, www.basenji.org and search by state. Anyone can advertise at AKC Marketplace and not all that are on that site are responsible breeders. Make sure to do your homework first....
