@k1ng87: just a puppy (no show dog, just a pet too), although wouldn't mind an older dog either who is well behaved…I'll be a first time dog owner (my mom never allowed me to have one because of allergies) and heard they are great for individuals with allergies While they are good with some people with allergies, not so with everyone. Because they do shed and they do have dander, they can and do set off reactions with some people.

I am very interrested in helping you and her. I live in Richmond, Va and had to put my Baby Girl down this past Labor Day. She was 11 shy of her 16 and one-half birthday. I got her when she was 4 months old. I am a stay at home mom and would have plenty of time to spend with her. If you would lick to speak more with me, send me an email and we can exchange information. I noted that you said that she does not like other dogs, so I wanted to let you know that I have none. Again, if you would like, please email me. dallasdog96@gmail.com (and, yes, her name was Dallas and she was born in 1996!)

Glad you got your dog! I looked for a thread on her but didn't see it. Please be sure to get her Fanconi tested (NOT the strip tests, but the actual Fanconi DNA test) as soon as possible if she is not already tested. BRAT strip tests but does not DNA and sometimes people get confused and think a clear strop means no Fanconi. Only by doing the DNA will you know.

Hi there, you are a little late. All of us have had our B puppies already. You can try two people, but please make sure you research the health testin background of each breeder. You can try Jennifer Hamaba, of Mandalay Basenjis. She is in Oshawa. Her info can be found here: http://mandalaybasenjis.webs.com/apps/blog/. Also, you can try Sanda Allan of Africanadian Basenji's. If you google her, it will show up. Also, you can give Chris Frost of Bushwacker basenji's a try. I don't know if she has anything or not. Unfortunately, mine are already spoken for.

I second the notion that a puppy might not be the right fit. There are many mature ones out there that need homes, and would (hopefully!) be less of a hassle, although some Basenjis never seem to outgrow the "puppy" stage! :) BRAT is a good site to start your research, perhaps right here: http://www.basenjirescue.org/REALITY%20STORIES/default.htm

I don't know if you have found a puppy but I have a friend that had an accidental litter. Because it was unplanned they did not have homes waiting. They have 4 black/white girls available and they are being raised with a wonderful family with 4 adult basenjis and two young children who are great with dogs. These pups will be well socialized and great family dogs. If you are interested let me know and I'll send you her contact info privately. Therese

There really is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. Really. Lots of hype, no facts that they exist. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hypoallergenic-dog-breeds/AN01953 Don' have to believe me, this is Mayo Clinic: Are there any hypoallergenic dog breeds? Answer from James T C Li, M.D., Ph.D. There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog breed, although some breeds may cause fewer allergy symptoms than others. Many people think that pet allergies are caused by a dog's or cat's fur, but the real source of pet allergies is often a protein that's in the saliva and urine of dogs and cats. This protein sticks to the dead, dried flakes (dander) from your pet's skin. Some dog breeds, such as the soft-coated wheaten terrier, or mixed breeds such as the goldendoodle, are marketed as hypoallergenic dogs because they don't shed fur or they shed very little. Because these dogs don't shed, the allergy-causing dander that sticks to their fur doesn't get released into the air or onto the floor as much as it would with a shedding dog. While you may have fewer allergy symptoms with a so-called hypoallergenic dog than with a shedding dog, no dog breed is hypoallergenic. There's some research suggesting that female dogs and Labrador retrievers might put off lower amounts of dog allergens. If you're allergic to dogs, but still want to have one, there are some things you can do to reduce your allergy symptoms: Choose a smaller dog, which will shed less dander than will a larger dog. Keep your pet out of your bedroom and other rooms you spend a lot of time in. Keep your pet outside, if weather permits. Bathe your pet weekly to remove dander from its coat. Choose carpet-free flooring, or shampoo your carpet regularly. Use a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) air purifier and vent filters to help reduce airborne pet allergens.<<
