I believe Pat/Tanza is referring to JEssica's dog [can't remember his/her name] and Julie's Diamond. The problem with Diamond was that while his Linkage Test was Probable Carrier, he was from a Probable Carrier x Probable Carrier breeding, which means that Julie SHOULD have been test stripping because this dog COULD have easily been affected due to the results of the parents… and having seen it happen to one of my dogs [we are in the same club]. My dog's linkage test result was Carrier and when re-done on the linkage test was Carrier again. She passed before the Direct Test and I have no idea if they ever re-did her test on the direct test to see if it was a DNA recombination or data entry error. Diamond's initial results [that were sent to her] were p. Carrier and were obviously a data entry issue as when they re-tested on the Linkage test he DID test as p. Affected. This was done AFTER he started spilling sugar, as he wasn't strip tested until he was showing obvious signs of Fanconi Syndrome [excessive drinking and urination]. I am with Debra… with over 5000 tested, there is room for error, it is possible with anything where there is human input.

He went to BRAT, and is now in foster care and doing great. Thanks for your concern!

My husband and I have been talking for a few months about adding a second Basenji to our family (we are the proud parents of a 2 as of this month Basenji mix). We have been watching BRAT but we also are considering going through a breeder, the reason for this is that we feel the best addition to our family would be a puppy under a year old. In our experience our little B girl has done best with puppies that are her size or smaller and she has spent time with since they were puppies (she is 13 lbs) or very mellow fully grown dogs (but even that is iffy). She does great with the dogs she has "grown up with".

Great that you are going to visit and seeing her basenjis first hand. That's one thing I admire about Jean - she is going to do what is best for her dogs and it is great that she is so straight forward - she wants it to work out for the dog and the person adopting. She may know of other breeders that have adults available - ask her when you visit with her - if you still think that basenjis are right for you. They aren't for everyone - my friends constantly ask me - you like these dogs why? hahaha And just so you know and so you won't think it is uncommon, I have 3 that I would say would need a basenji experienced person, my 4th (which is Jean's boy, Ozzy), would probably be the perfect dog for anyone - he's almost an impostor because he is such an easy basenji - but I deserve him after my other three. ;)

@nomrbddgs: I did find a lady for you, unfortunately, Luther is sick and has taken a turn for the worse recently, so that meeting was cancelled even before I could tell you. I would also look on Petharbor and Adopt-A-Pet. It can be difficult to find one under 1 year of age. You might have to go farther in your search or perhaps raise the age to 2 years. Jennifer

Keiko is adorable - gotta admit, the expression on her face and in her eyes is a window into her mischievous soul. Like mine, she appears to be one you can't give an inch to and basenji-proofing her home would be a real must. There's no question prospective adopters should be made aware they are lot more work than the average "dog."

We have learned that the best thing with our Basenji is lots of rawhides, and not little ones (those are gone too soon in our house) but big braided ones. It may help with the chewing!

There are breeders in OH that would be listed on the BCOA website. If you are getting a dog from a breeder make sure the dog and/or the parents are health tested. I am sorry to hear about your boy passing from Diabetes. I have heard about a couple of Bs being diagnosed with Diabetes and not with Fanconi Syndrome lately! Jennifer
