@Lenora: Hello to the new basenji owner from Birmingham! I live in Highland Park, so you are not alone. I got Abbey two years ago from some people in Morris who have the parents. She is actually not the first basenji I've had. We got Pumpkin in 1970 from the humane society here in Birmingham for $3 dollars!! Pumpkin was the color of a pumpkin. I didn't know basenjis came in black and white til I saw Abbey. The original owners had four puppies and for some reason she didn't sell till she was four months old. Basenjis here are rare, and that's part of the joy of owning one. People stop me all the time in the street and say, that's the most beautiful basenji I have ever seen! And people who don't know what she is make all kinds of guesses–a jack russell terrier is the most frequent guess. One man yesterday said is that a short haired collie (I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing). And everybody who doesn't know about basenjis is fascinated to hear about them. yes when jig and i are out and about or even at the vet, we are always stopped because people are like what kind of dog is that. he is so pretty. of course jig is quite the flirt and loves the attention and putting on a show. glad to know im not the only one around these parts! im down 280, passes brook highlands, greystone i guess you would call it!

It's a lovely story you shared, Sunny! Sounds like Sandie was really meant to be a member of your "pack". Can't wait to see pictures of the big eared beauty!

Your baby is very cute! Let's see, a Basentzu or a Shihsenji… Shih Tzus I have known have been loves, but tend to be airheads, and Basenjis are frequently smarter than we are, so who knows what you'll get! Welcome to the Forum! Terry

A lot of people mistake him for a full bred pit. When we got him from the >>pet adoption fair, we were told that he was a Basenji, and not a pit. There >>is a distinction. He doesn't look a pit at all to me. He's not mean at all >>either Weird. Pits don't look at all like Basenjis. and Pits are not mean either, unless their owners have trained them or encouraged such behavior. Pits are naturally friendly, generally well-behaved dogs that have gotten bad press due to poor owners. Just so you know, onions are bad for dogs That's what I've heard recently too. Although when my dog was very ill about five years ago –near death due to an apparent poisoning -- chicken broth with garlic and onions was all she could keep down. Vet was sure she'd have to be euthanized, it was that bad. But we brought her back with "soup" a TBSP at a time and licking ice cubes. Maybe it's just "one of those things", like the fact that chocolate can kill a dog, but I have friends whose three dogs LIVE for M&Ms every day. And Hershey's bars when they can steal them. Weird.

I am a huge "Bryan Gregory Fan" also, LOL He is is very particular about the dogs he will breed. He does great at follow-up once you get your puppy home, too; is always available to give advice, answer questions, etc. {And Lord knows he is patient with first time Basenji owners, very patient, …<grin> I love to watch Jazzy when she sees him at shows. She loves him! I'm hoping he sticks around for a few more years -- have to give me time to convince my husband that "we" want another Basenji after my older mixed breed dog dies. LOL {Poor man, thinks Jazzy is my last dog.} And if I get another one, I'd like it to be a Jumoke pup.</grin>
