Adopting Cali

  • Hello All,
I just adopted a Basenji mix from the humane society five days ago and I am so happy. I went to the humane society on my lunch break one day, as I had planned on adopting a dog. There were about 30 to 40 puppies/dogs and she immediately caught my attention. She is reserved and affectionate, but also a little stubborn. In some ways she reminds me of a cat. I have owned 1 pitbull/rottweiler mix and 2 german shepherds in the past, so she is definitely different.
They anticipate her to be around 1 yr old and said she was brought in as a stray. She is completely white, but her face and ears are brindle and also has a patch of brindle at the base of her back. Her tail curls up, but it is not fluffy like the pure bred Basenjis. I can see things will be challenging in the training dept, but she is adorable. I have only heard her make the "woof sound" and she whines a little when she wants attention.
I am sure I will learn a lot about this breed from reading the forum and will post a picture soon.
    tlbuddy and Cali;)

That b/w is a man with attitude ! He'll survive - But talk to Steve Gonto - a great benefactor to our breed. I was delighted to meet him on a visit to our shores many years ago now.

LOL agile, Sayblee did yodel for me but much more for the spousal unit. Arwen doesn't do it at all and at 8 not likely to happen. Cara has had one almost yodel. :( She does musical yawns a lot though, and barks. Well more like boofs.

You guys, Mambo's owner already posted pictures of his pup's parents in his intro thread here. He is a confirmed shiba/basenji mix. Perhaps, for obvious reasons, I remember this one pretty well. ;) Hope Mambo's doing well!

Right on! My Basenji is a mix breed as well, and I also adopted him. He is an absolute handful, but one of the best parts of my day is when I get home and see how he excited he is that dads home. And yeah… as far as chew toys, I have not found a single one that he can't destroy in less than 5 minutes. The best toy I've gotten him was a coil of rope that I tied into knots. lol, be prepared to pick up little pieces of his victims every day.
