Brand new Basenji owner

Member Introductions
  • Hi I Rachel, am a brand new basenji owner….and by that I mean this is my first day with my first Basenji. lol I am 18 and live in New Mexico. I own three dogs, Ananda the Coyote/shepherd mix, Keoke the Doberman/Pitt mix, and Kiora my new Basenji. Kiora is a young adult tri-color female, I adopted her so I am not sure of her exact age,but she is estimated to be between 9 months to a year. She is unregistered but I will be getting her ILP as soon as she is fixed. My other two dogs are really hating me right now, lol. They are all really curious about each other but they are not quiete sure what to make of each other yet. Being a sighthound lover I have been familiar with the basenji breed for quiet some time, and after meeting her and seeing what a wonderful personality she has it was an easy descision to adopt her. She does have some SA but since there is almost always someone at home in my house I am not really worried about it. We have just got back from a nice walk and a romp in the park and she is crashed out under my bed...a tired dog is a good dog!;) I look forward to getting to know everybody and there 'senjis as I get to know mine as well.

@elbrant That's how all my 8-some learned to catch. If food dropped on the floor - you lost it ! So they all stood on their hind legs and it was like feeding a nest of fledgling sparrows. A gentle toss of the treat and someone caught it !

@macattack Thanks for that - I went to the AKC website and got his reg# and birthday AND one other brother. All that is registered from that litter. I added them both to the database this morning and they will appear later today when I re-upload it all. You can have hours of fun, exploring Charlie's ancestry ! Maybe we'll find others later -

Sean, as a new member of the Forum but an old doggy daddy I have had a lot of experience with many breeds. Reading about your requirements for a dog I have to suggest that you consider getting a rescue greyhound, it will be a great companion for when you run and the rest of the time they are very laidback. Basenji's are very intelligent and require a good deal of intellectual stimulation, otherwise they get bored and a bored B is a mischievious B.

I didn't know much about B's when I met Champ but to say that what characteristics B's share is "special needs" is plain idiotic. I consider it a blessing to have familiarized (and still learing) with this wonderful breed. It has made me realize that all dogs are not the same and it's important to learn as much about what makes them individuals as possible. I'm glad Raleigh found you and is now able to express himself freely without being labeled "special needs."
