None of my dogs are allowed outside when I am not home. I guess I figure if a kid shouldn't be left out there while I'm not home then the dogs shouldn't either they could both get in a lot of trouble if left unattended. Even though we have a privacy fence I still have to worry about things like hawks and even eagles. I heard a hawk and then heard it get one of the neighbors chickens that hang out in my yard. One lady in the area had to shoot a hawk to keep if from getting her Jack Russell puppy. So I guess even though I'm retired military I still have guard duty…....that's ok I love these dogs!!

I have a personal close friend who lost a litter this spring when the bitch ate the entire litter in about 10 min after having them. It DOES happen, and, yes, probably more frequently than anyone will admit. I did write up a few pieces, in stages, on the whole process of selecting a stud, breeding, pregnancy, whelping and now will come the after care for the BCOA Newsletter. There are a lot of people out there who think you can just have a litter without any forthought. I also know of one person whose pup had an imperforate anus (no bumhole). So, as Pat and Lisa state, this is not all fun and games, but sometimes really hard choices to be made.

I think a sticky with the above info would save some hurt feelings.

It needs to be shared. IMO.

Haha a Basenji breeder making profit that´ll be the day if one makes end´s meet(hmm is that english)one should be so lucky.I´m not a breeder but my boy has been used for stud this fall and just paying all the shows(gas,show entries etc)the extensive health testing hips,eyes,fanconi,thyroid panel including TgAA wasn´t cheap.Can assure anyone that his stud fee won´t make me rich but that´s not what i´m intrested in i´m more curious seeing what kinda puppies this combo will give and if he passes on his qualities.

Regarding breeding your boy. Most breeders will not breed to a male they do not know. They pick a Stud dog for his Health Testing, Pedigree, Show record, conformation & the owners connected. Sometimes location plays a major part. Conformation plays a big part of picking a Stud dog i.e. will he improve on my bitches movement? Topline? Earset?
No dog is perfect & we are breeding to improve the Breed not to make money or just have puppies.
Not questioning your information, but I would reccomend doing some research & getting all the information you can about you boy. Next regardless of breeding him or not, do ALL the health testing. This will be helpful for your Basenji's future health & maintance.
Not all dogs or bitches are 'worthy' of being bred. Find out if you's is worthy & be picky about the bitch he is bred to. It is much easier to buy a Show quality puppy than to breed your next Show prospect.
I work for a Veterinarian & many Dog owners want to 'Stud Out' their male. This never happens! As a bitch owner I will find the best dog out there that will mesh with my bitch to produce better puppies.
Lastly I have had a dog die very suddenly from prostate problems. He died before I could get him to the Vet. This was years ago when the risk of anestetic was not worth it to me. He was a mix breed & a wonderful dog. Gumby taught he so much in life & his death taught me even more. Don't make the same mistake I made, it isn't worth it.
NOT all Finished Champions are of true breeding quality. And "Sperm is Cheap"!!

Well put, Dash. I don't think the issue was so much the language or tone in which the responses were delivered but more that they were not what webedoggies wanted to hear. And as a result webedoggies was instantly unwilling to consider advice coming from people highly qualified to give it. All we can hope for now is that he/she thinks twice.

Exactly…. and it is easy enough to check on the OFA site or Sally's pedigree site (of course that is not updated until OFA site is updated). But never go on what "he said/she said"... at least I don't... but there has been much discussion on other lists about well know breeder not testing or doing a questionable breeding with tested dogs... all pretty easily documented on the OFA site. So in some cases could be "he said/she said" with no truth to the statements..... as said, best and the responsible thing to do is check out your facts.

Luxating pattella's can be check by your regular Vet during a regular Vet visit.. and not a bad thing to do… seems that we are finding this problem a bit more then we would like in our breed.

Hmm, I have heared about types of Wolfhound (in German the breed is called Tchechoslowakischer Wolfshund) which also become their oestrus once a Year.

I think it has something to do with how domesticated the breed is. I thought Dingos also have only one Oestrus per Year, Wolves as well…

last fall was my first time with intact males and an in season girl. i'd plugged it in when z first started maybe/possibly coming in. i had no idea if it worked. until it expired. oh my! the whining all night long. i looked at the calendar, sure enough, no more DAP. there was still liquid in the container, so i thought it was still working - nope. so, replace on schedule.

No cut off age… as long as they are potent... I used a 14yr old with one of my litters and it was a natural cover.
