@helle-devi said in Puppy Scams (NBC Today show report): Pedigrees can be verified on the Zande pedigree database And in a kind of negative way, if the parents are NOT listed on my web pedigree database, it is entirely possible that the breeder is a puppy-farmer and therefore well nigh impossible for me to obtain data from. I would be suspicious. There are a few who health test breeding stock - these I get from OFA. But often only one dog is tested / registered from a litter of 6. You can get an idea of the number in a litter from the last two digits on a registration. If, for example, the Mom's reg# ends in /05, and she apparently has no siblings. . . alarm bells might sound too. She does have at least 4 brothers and sisters - so why are they not listed ? I do spend hours each week, checking for siblings on the AKC website once I get a registration, date of birth and Mom.

@karabovm - You might try https://www.kusa.co.za/index.php kennel club in south africa, they might be able to give you some leads.... or try and find a dog show and visit them. Also you can ask other breeders of other hounds if they know of one.

Thank you all for the info! I’ll definitely try to get in contact with the breeders listed to see what they have planned for the upcoming winter/in the future.

To Georges Nana- I'm so thrilled to hear my pups and young adults ding well-- they always have a placein my heart here on the red river( Rio Grande) in New Mexicoi- Doing some retraining myself on a girl who was out showing and finished her G ch with some gr placements who definintely needs some reacquaintance with her home virtues- back to rehoming as she is a beautiful talented girl- My original trainer died this week of pancreatic cancer quite suddenly so I am on my own only with her parting words to guide me- so I hope my successful training program continues Her uncle Tibby andI are working with her together.

If you read your posts, in fact ALL of the posts directed towards me, they have been extremely derogatory & confrontational. Whenever / wherever I took my little girl with me to spend time with the Elderly, etc. (NEVER in large groups), she was a happy little girl. If more people showed up, she was even happier. Why? Because she ADORED the attention. It was how she was when we had gatherings @ our home. We NEVER had to kennel her because she wanted to be with EVERY one. She is just a social doggie. I do know there are other Basenji who are not however, whenever we have gone to the CBR Reunion, there were MANY stories like ours. Even CBR did NOT consider it a bad idea for her to go with me. In fact, they thought it was good for her because they knew she was SAFE with me AND they knew I take EXCELLENT care of her & would NEVER EVER let anyone harm her. They also know what a little socialite she is & knew she would LOVE it. Now, if I had a Basenji who was NOT social, OF COURSE, I would NEVER EVER force them into a situation into which they were not comfortable. That would be emotional suicide for the dog. So please do not treat me like an idiot. I am an extremely educated woman - most especially regarding this breed. Yet everyone on this topic has treated me with such disrespect & assumption as if I were completely ignorant or without feeling about the breed, about my Basenji. I even hesitate in calling her mine because I have never considered her to be a possession. She has ALWAYS been a member of our family - from day one. So, delete all you want Ms. Brant. This Forum is not my entire world. [deleted religious banter]

Replying late, but Mankia Basenjis is in Ontario, as well, as is Duara basenjis. Mankia is in Windsor and Duara is in Sherkston. Good luck!

We got our wonderful basenji who just turned 1 in Dec from Khanis basenjis in SE Portland. She does allow you to go visit and see the dogs and ask any questions. Last year we got to play with about 15 puppies it was great She does show her dogs so her reply may not always be quick

Go to www.basenji.org, you can search by state/country as BCOA has members in Canada or breeders in the Pacific North West can give suggestions.

@donc - Not true that breeders traditionally breed for conformation only. Breeders (responsible breeders) breed for health, temperament and conformation. Health/temperament is at the top of the list. Breeders do of course look for certain conformation but that does not exclude Health & Temperament.

I actually go my 4 yr old girl from Eldorado Basenjis in MA ( I live in NJ). I was referred to them by Sue Coe, now semi retired and living in Australia (I'd gotten my last 3 Basenji's from Sue when they retired from the show ring). As adorable as the puppies are, I don't have time and patience to help them through babyhood so I have always opted for a young adults and once again the formula has worked for me. My Olly is now 5 and is totally adorable. Just like her predecessors, she has me wrapped around her little paw. Having been in the show ring, she is pretty well socialized to people and travel (although she wasn't real thrilled the first time she met a horse - "Gosh, Mom...... that's a really big dog!"). She is so mellow and laid back that the landlord of my office building has declared the building pet friendly. He wants her to come to work as often as she likes. Puppies are wonderful but don't discount the young, mature or even senior dogs that reputable breeders or BRAT may have available. Whatever and whenever you chose, welcome to Basenjiland and good luck!!!

Hi, I have one of Valerie's dogs and I have been very, very happy with him. He's just a great dog ... tricolor and quite handsome... no health issues! I find some of you people so judgemental and your posts really obnoxious!
