@ibi_n_sane: well done :-) looks like she has a chewie bone for the rest of the year >lol< nice pictures, she is lovely!! I wonder though why they did not maw the grass LOL Thank you. She sits on one end of the bone and chews the other. I was disopointed that we didn't get a Rossette though:( It's a pity thay didn't mow the grass, she kept disopearing in it :D

Join MABC [Mid Atlantic Basenji Club]. Conformation classes. But, really you should contact the breeder and get info from them. Good luck!

There were only 5 entered which is terrible considering it is a show with basenji classes on (not many of those around!!), i try to enter any that do put our classes on as if they dont get the entries they wont keep doing them which is a shame. But yeah, win some lose some. Tamu looked absolutely stunning and definately deserved his BOB. Maya was being her normal self, a complete princess! The show was held in an unheated cattle shed type thing, with a ring directly infront of the open door and it was bloomin' freezing! So she stood in the ring with her ears sideways (what she does when she is unhappy), shivering and looking very sullen lol. Madam does not like going anywhere unless its warm and sunny! But the other dogs managed to just get on with it and show so she was just being a princess about the whole situation i think lol.

@Quercus: Agreed. It isn't good form to be hovering at ring entrance with any dog, really… True. I've been at many shows when another breed is 'hogging' the entrance and the people with the breed that is 'up' cannot get through without shoving someone aside to get to the ring opening.

Maybe this should go in Chit Chat, but since it involves Cricket, thought I'd tack it on to this thread… We have an ad coming out in Sight and Scent magazine - the Basenji issue - in April, just to let everyone know we moved to Texas. Used Cricket's picture from Inland Empire Hound Club in California and her first Best of Breed at Fort Bend KC in Texas ( handled by our daughter) Cricket is adorable (well, maybe I'm a little less than objective) Terry

@Maya: Thanks for the link. It doesnt seem to say exactly what the dog has to have won at the show to be called "Best of Winners" though, but im guessing from the descriptions in the rules that it must be the same as our best of sex. It is the best between the class dog that was winners (and the one that got points) and the class bitch (and the one that got points). And the Best of Winners gets as many points as the one that didn't got best of winners. So, if the class Winners bitch got 3 points (known as a major) but in class dogs there were only enough for 2 points, if the Winners Dog then was Best of Winners, he too would get 3 points. We call that a cross over major. LOL, I am sure it is confusing, but then I still get confused on your point systems with Challenges… gggg

As Agile Basenji stated, find a local conformation class, you can get private lessons but I think that a group class is better for the dog as there's more distractions going on and the ones I've been to have had all the people go over other's dogs so they're used to strangers approaching and touching them. Get a grooming table if you don't have one already, stack your pup everyday, have friends come up to him and look at his teeth and run their hands over him. Don't forget the testicles….the judge is going to feel them too. I've only showed one dog so far, and it took me just shy of two years to finish him....but...I did all by myself and there's nothing like it when you get those last points. I had to travel to Az for majors but that was part of the fun. Some people like showing, some like other sports.... you pick the one you want and go for it. All dogs have faults, some more than others, but when you walk into that ring, it's all about the judge and what THEIR opinion is. You will find it harder with a Trindle as some judges will put you last just because of it, but there are trindles that are Champions...they are Brindle pointed tri's...note the Tri...they fall under that color category. Go to the shows beforehand and meet some breeders and find one willing to help you. It may turn out that your boy doesn't do well in the show ring, but I give you points for even trying!!! DO however, get that fanconi test done as Sinjabe suggested. You can still show him, but you will want to get him neutered at some point before he gets too old and you want to know what is in store for you should he test probably affected. Good Luck!

@Benkura: Thanks. I've found a page on the Swedish Kennel Club site that lists dates for shows. Can I assume that Basenjis are scheduled for all group 5 days?? I'll need to get my atlas out and have a look where's where in Sweden!! :) Yes, basenjis are group 5. Google maps works great too ;)
