I've tried bait and no bait in the ring. I think bait works better for Logan, but not for me. He likes it and responds to it well, but as a new handler it's a pain in the butt. I know what I'm expected to do. Doing it once in the ring is hard. I get caught up in the minute and then forget what I'm supposed to do the next. I once stacked Logan backwards on the table. D'oh! Logan is SUPER food driven and he knows if I have cookies in my pocket. That's all he'll pay attention to. Jumping on the handler is frowned upon. Yes, I know training and time will cure it. Not there yet. Too many hobbies. Showing, breeding, MGBs, stereos, astronomy, motorcycles, family, friends, travel, house, etc. I need more time.

@Roux I have to live with the dogs 24/7. The judge sees them for maybe 3 minutes. My preference tops his/hers !

@cashh - Just curious, did you have your dog excused? Typically it is because of being lame in the ring or not letting the judge to exam the dog?

@eeeefarm said in Complete newbie to showing: ... I had a husky/shepherd crossbred that was the same way. Put a muddy dog in the barn at night, open the door to a perfectly clean one in the morning! What the...? Did they wipe themselves with a horse? :face_with_tears_of_joy:

@evillemon said in How to start showing: @debradownsouth Yes we figured we will wait until he is at least two before we make any decisions on neutering him. I can understand why you might want to neuter a female but a male? Agree you need to wait. Most of the reasons advanced to neuter come from groups with an agenda but without solid science. Generally speaking the health risks of neutering outweigh any benefits and there is no effect on behavior. In my experience, having an intact male Basenji never presented any issues at all. Unless you just let your dog roam free I can't think of a single good reason to do it.

In that shot, she looks like a basenji. I'll happily decrease photo size if you want to send them to me.

Some judges are might not be happy about it but missing a toenail is not at all something a dog should be not placed for. If it comes down to “I like both dogs and have to pick” it could be a deciding factor. No dog is perfect! Like Pat said, the basenji standard has no DQs.

I have also seen current research on dewclaw removal that has me convinced to never do it again. I am exhausted but will try to post the links if anyone is interested... maybe tomorrow
