RE: Kamar with his goblets!
Last weekend Kamar was at another dog show, and he was BOB, and with 155 different puppies, he went BEST IN SHOW! How cool is that? His critique from the breed judging was:
"8 months. Finally a basenji that is not too big! Lovely head, beautiful neck, strong back, correct tail, excellent body, well angulated and very nice movements. Corr. coat, nice temperament."
WOW congrats he is Beautiful

RE: My baby Cheyenne
Cheyenne is beautiful! I'm sure you will enjoy her– she will definitely keep you entertained.
If your breeder had tested the parents for Fanconi, I'm pretty sure he would have told you. It's a very big deal with Basenjis, and responsible breeders are quick to share health results. You're doing the right thing by checking it out, because you need to know if your little girl is at risk, and the sooner you educate yourself, the better. But let's hope your adorable girl is clear and has a long, healthy life in front of her. She really is a beauty!
i just checked with him about it and they are clear of it Thank you for the comment she is wonderful when I visit her. Very Playful now, I know she will need daddy time alot.lol oops looks like the wife will have to understand

RE: My baby Cheyenne
You don't need the strips if the parents and the pup have had the direct DNA test and all has came back normal. I would make sure to ask the breeder if he has done the direct DNA test and to see the results. This is in your best interests as well as the puppies.
I did some looking around and found the DNA test through OFA. I am going to talk with the owner of the mom and dad and have him do it. i didn't know it was DNA until I looked around. it will be taking care off asap

RE: My baby Cheyenne
How old are the parents? If they are young-under 2 or 3, the owner is probably not even urine strip testing them for Fanconi Syndrome which is done monthly if the parents have not been DNA tested for Fanconi Syndrome. The average age for Fanconi Syndrome is 6-7 years old although there have been dogs as young as 3 being diagnosed. You need to read up on Fanconi Syndrome and other genetic diseases in Basenjis including eye problems, hypothyroidism, etc. If a dog has Fanconi Syndrome, it can never be cured of it only managed. I have taken care of 3 Fanconi Affecteds so far and my present girl is taking about 15 pills in addition to all the supplements I put in her food. The dog needs to drink lots of water and urinate a lot. It is a genetic kidney disorder and basically the dog urinates all its nutrients away and one must supplement with Sodium Bicarbonate and the nutrients. Here is the Fanconi Disease Management Protocol: http://basenjirescue.org/Fanconi/FanconiProtocol.pdf
If you have the pedigree you can look on the OFA website if the grandparents or other relatives have been tested for it or go to the Basenji Pedigree Database for related relatives. Some of us on this forum know of kennel lines and pedigrees that have Fanconi Syndrome in them. Do you have a pedigree for your puppy or know the grandparents?
There is no excuse for a breeder to breed Basenjis without being DNA tested for Fanconi Syndrome! The test costs only $75 dollars per dog. There is also no excuse for anyone to purchase a puppy without at least the parents being tested as it will only encourage these breeders to breed more untested pups in the future. I also have a problem with puppies and their parents not being eye tested since many of my rescues have had genetic eye problems at younger ages.

Wow I will get the strips and make sure I have a vet that knows about Basenji's.. But I will look at the paper work he has on the line and do more research

RE: New to forum
Bimmy very happy and Healthy, Welcome to the site. lots to learn here on the site.

RE: My baby Cheyenne
Fanconi is not tested by a vet and it can be bred away from. There is no need for people to breed a fanconi affected puppy anymore. If this is not tested for then you have no idea what you are getting.

I think you need to read this, halfway down the page is the medical problems that can plague Basenji's. I know you are really excited about getting your baby B, but you also want to make sure your B is a healthy little pup and you are not getting into something that will upset you later.
Please read the info on the site.
What I meant was that the pup was checked out health wise and the mom and dad is fine. The mom and Dad does not have Fanconi The guy I am getting the pup from is aware of the health issue they have. he has been up front with me so far. I do understand what you are saying

RE: My baby Cheyenne
Does Rick have a kennel name or test for Fanconi and other B related problems? I really hope you are getting your B from a reputable breeder.
He is not a breeder But he has had the pups checked out by his vet, The pups have been to the vet and tested and UTD on shots He has Three other Basenji s he owns. I am also going to have my vet check her out. She will be seeing my vet in a few weeks..

RE: Puppy Vaccines
If your vet uses a brand other than Intervet's Continuum then you should booster at 1 year and then every 3 years after that. Continuum is good for 3 years after the last puppy shot.
Thanks i will look into that and see what they use..

RE: Anyone in the Tampa,Florida area?
Hi DogLover 86! Yes, Joanne is right, we have been to 2 dog parks today here in Tampa. We have a regular informal meet-up group that gathers at West Park Dog Park every Sunday around 10:30-11 and stays till at least 1, often 2, 3 or even 4 pm when the weather is so wonderful. There are 7 of us, each with 2 or 3 basenjis, who are there almost every Sunday, there are a dozen or so who come irregularly, when they all show up we have up to 23 basenjis at one time! We had 17 two weeks ago, but 'only' 11 today. We look forward to meeting you and your puppy-girl. The basenjis are very welcoming to most all basenjis, especially puppies. We had a new 'dad' who brought his 9 week old boy a few weeks ago, sadly he works many Sundays but hopefully he will be able to come back occasionally.
Google Hillsborough County parks, look for West Park and it will link you to a good map. Coming from Spring HIll, if you take the Veteran's you exit at Hillsborough avenue and come east about a mile to Hesperdes (there is a light), turn left and go to Jean street, turn left and go 1 loooong block and you will be facing the park at the end.
See you soon! Remember to be sure she has all her shots before coming, I think the rules say 3 or 4 months, but I see younger pups there all the time!
Cheyenne will have all her shots next month you should be up there soon when it is safe to come..
