Behavioral Issues
  • I have a 12 week old Basenji and she is starting to get a little aggressive with our other two dogs. this Morning my wife thought is was going to be a full blow fight between them. had to break them up.. Does anyone know what I can do to try to stop this? I do not want to get ride of any of the dogs due to this..

  • Have you talked to the breeder? And aggressive how? Over toys? Over food? Over the humans? Sometimes 3's a crowd and it just doesn't work… If over food and/or toys then you need make sure you feed separately (if you are not doing that already) and with toys and there is problems, then they have no toys unless supervised or in crates.

Many times what seems to be an all out fight is really the adults teach the pup its place

  • They eat in different rooms to be safe.. They were playing and then the Basenji ( Cheyenne) attacked one of our other Babies.. Toys are fine.. Humans no Problem

  • What breeds and ages are the other two dogs? And what sex? 12 weeks is pretty young to be getting pushy. How did the others react to her aggressiveness?

  • one is about 14-15 weeks old she was the one she got into with it. she yelped out wife broke it up.. the other one is 2 both are shih tzu's all are female

  • I would be more inclined to think that the one that yelped was telling the other (B puppy) TOO Rough… that is how they communicate..... unless it is really a fight, you really need to let them work it out.

And honestly, three bitches in one house?.... could be Trouble waiting to happen

  • In all honesty, there is not enough detail to know what the heck happened. When puppies get overly tired they do not always know how to disengage and calm themselves. Some will just keep amping up until they are over threshold. I saw this a lot with my two boys this year and frequently had to separate them so they could calm down and sleep otherwise they would just pick and pick on each other until one had a tantrum.

  • Since they are so young I would assume it is each trying to figure out where they fit in the scheme of things and you may be overreacting. I will however tell you that the one breed of dogs that my basenjis have never liked is ****zu.

Helena, we still have a long way to go with Kwame but i feel more relaxed about him now. The support from people has helped along with the advice. It was such a relief not to go to classes with him on saturday, i felt like a load had been lifted off my shoulders. I guess i felt we should keep going because Malaika has done so well with them. It took a while to become apparent that the enviroment was wrong for him. Kwame and Malaika do try to avoid having the leaders on and occasionaly on the walk will try to wipe them off on our legs ;) however i feel they are worth persevering with as the effect is so dramatic and our walks are transformed. I am keeping the harness in mind though if neccasary, it's good to know there are options.

Wow! this is one of many, many threads that I have responded to and I am very interested in the outcome of Poopydog and the nipping. As I was going through the Thread, I really had to bypass any of the responses of those who enjoy attacking one another. I sure hope this behavior did not thwart our member who really needed help. The majority are replies to one another trying to impart important knowledge or experience to someone who did not ask for it in the first place. Don't try to sound important. Everyone is, just give happy good-hearted advice and let us just not dig into the other who has a different opinion. Just dig, digs, and more digs. Really getting old….........................I know you won't miss me, but this is just too much.................................................................

@sharronhurlbut: With rescue dogs, we make walking them together a big deal..several times a day. Letting them sniff the "leavings" of the other, and just getting them out together and moving. It might help. Sharron, thanks. Yes we do walk them together as well as seperately. They do seem to get on well but i don't think they have sorted out who is the dominant one. I can't say at this point either. When play fighting he certainly makes lots of noise, whilst she is silent. He looks to be in charge sometimes, however if she silently draws her lips back and stares at him he backs off or lets her clean in his mouth/ eyes etc. If Kwame wants to sleep, she is a terrible torment and pokes and prods him, he gets very whipped up and goes for her but it's like water of a Ducks back.

I agree with Debra…dogs who feel it is okay to growl and snap at their owners to get their way should not be sleeping in the bed. Paulajean, you can work this out...just get some good advice from a good trainer...she is not a bad dog, you just need a way to communicate to her that you are the leader :) Check out Patricia McConnell's book "How to Be the Leader of the Pack (and have your dog love you for it)" you can google it and find it at several different vendors.

I am finding out quickly that if things are too quiet I better go find Bella. Most of the time she is asleep but there are those times that my tennis shoes or sandals are now becoming just chew toys. Upsetting but funny too. Kind of like my 2 year old grandson's antics.

Some basenjis seem to have particular kinds of dogs they don't like. My Abbey is best friends with a rottweiller, a black lab, and a dalmation, but she hates golden retrievers! What do they go by, coat color?? She goes after anything that moves at the vet's though. My first basenji many years ago, Pumpkin, climbed trees to get after squirrels, and fences were no problem either.
