Anyone know this breeder… in NY?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Rip Van Wrinkle… cute name for a Basenji club.

I agree that there are a lot of red flags. The generic OFA certificate (and only for Fanconi) is especially puzzling to me. It's like ANYONE with a brindle B boy of approximately the same age can claim that certification as their own... And if their dam has "won several shows," why not put all that information out there?

Is this about the time of year when Basenji pups appear all over the place? I know there are many highly anticipated ones on this forum, and I'm so happy to welcome them too, and to vicariously experience other people's puppies. But it is also eye-opening to see what goes on in the "rest" of the non-forum world, as it were...

  • African genetics!!??

  • There is a gal on this forum.. Gerri McCann [can't remember if I sp that right] and she has posted on their blog about how great their dogs are and such…
so perhaps she knows more than the little on their site.

I don't know how anyone would know their dogs since there are nothing but call names posted... and the one that was fanconi tested was tested as a puppy... and was not AKC registered. So not sure what type of shows they actually do.

  • Khanis, your memory is impressive!

The unspayed adult female that was returned and being resold as a show prospect is now gone…

  • Lisa Simmon's bitch Miss P (she just had puppies) is SunDiata's Kamili Uhuru. Her 'kennel' name is Northeast Exotic Breeders. That's what I found out anyway.

Yes, This is true.. Though, Miss P's last litter was over a year ago.. I wanted to clarify a couple of things for everyone…

We have just created our blog and are still working on many aspects of the site.. There will be many new features coming soon including links to our testing. The reason I had posted Ace's, "Ahmahr Nahr's ace number one" actual certificate is because we do work with people who do not have as much knowledge of the process and realize they may want to see the actual certificate. We will be including Offa links to the testing for all of our dogs in the near feature..
Our Dam Sizzle, registered name, "Mariah's lets get the fire started". and has won several shows before she came home to us. Our sire "Ebony" registered name, "Mibre's ebb magic man to Ahmahr Nahr".

I have just Joined the forums here and would be more than happy to answer any questions you have.

  • Health testing?

  • Welcome, Basenjiblogs. I posted about your site under the assumption that you would eventually find your way here, and I'm glad you did. I think there's a lot of essential information and extremely knowledgeable Basenji people here. If you are breeding, I would think that you will want to be part of a community as an active participant, whether it's online in a forum like this or in the show ring/local breed clubs/etc.

I am not a breeder, but I have learned a lot from this forum since acquiring my pet Basenji. As someone on the "other", non-breeding side, I really appreciate it when breeder websites aim for an audience of knowledgeable puppy buyers by making the education process part of the website itself, and including all information about health testing, registered names, OFA entries, etc., without having to be asked for it. It may very well be that the people you work with do not have knowledge of the process, but it may also be that some people DO have knowledge of the process and respond critically to what they don't see on the website by skipping over your litters altogether.

Hopefully you'll find these comments to be constructive…

  • Ahmahr Nahr are these B's not from the lawyer down in New Mexico?

  • Thank You Curlytails. I do appreciate you comments and welcome them. I do also understand that our site has a long way to go. I am constantly working to improve it. But, far from done..
We have been "lurking" here for a while and would like to become more involved. We do realize that there are a lot of very knowledgeable folks here and believe that we can learn a lot. Hopefully, making some new friends along the way. We have not been as involved as we should have been recently with showing our Basenji's but are planning to do so this spring. We have also began working with another breeder whom we consider to be very accomplished and respected in the basenji world, to become more educated and involved in the community. "I am sure they are a member here and will let them decide if they wish to be named".

  • Where is the **health testing information??? yikes!

  • @Basenjiblogs:

The reason I had posted Ace's, "Ahmahr Nahr's ace number one" actual certificate is because we do work with people who do not have as much knowledge of the process and realize they may want to see the actual certificate.

And yet the certificate you posted is so vague that it could have easily been any brindle boy, in fact that is the "name" on the certificate. It does not identify the tested dog as Ace or Ahmahr Nahr's ace number one. If that was enough for the buyers to feel comfortable that the parents were adequately tested then they are seriously under educated about health testing. What about the dam? Both parents should be tested before breeding.

  • Hey curlytails?
what other interesting basenji or any other breed blogs do you know about?

Your site concerns no one, it is the testing and lack of upfront information that is the concern. The best puppymillers have superb webpages. That isn't how responsible breeders are judged.

Too bad you didn't learn a lot before diving into breeding.

I hope you are sincere about wanting to learn and do things right. Will be watching for your responses on testing.

Debradownsouth, I realize to you and some others we may be looked at as a back yard breeder. I suppose I can understand why! Our goal though, is to be a responsible breeder.. I can admit that maybe we did jump the gun and had more to learn before breeding our dogs. but, We do realize this and are trying to take steps to correct this.. Such as, joining here on the forums in an attempt to make new friends and to learn as much about our beloved breed as we can.
Though we might not have started in the correct manner we are looking to change that, We came here in hopes of meeting people that are knowledgeable of this breed and are willing to share their knowledge with us so that we can make responsible breeding choices. Although, I am starting to get the impression that some members of this community have no desire to help "new comers" and would rather push them away than take the time to guide them into better ways.

Again, Maybe we got off on the wrong foot here on the forums. That was not my intent and I would like to start over if we can…. We do all share a common goal here and our love for this breed is what drives us all. :)

  • Although, I am starting to get the impression that some members of this community have no desire to help "new comers" and would rather push them away than take the time to guide them into better ways.

I am positive that no one feels this way. Everyone here, humans and dogs, benefits when there are more responsible breeders. If your goal is truly to be a responsible breeder, people will support that goal. They'll also speak their minds about what is NOT responsible. Some of those things might be opinion, but most of them are universally agreed upon.

I hope your mentor is solid and plain-spoken :)

  • If you truly plan to become responsible people will support you but actions speak louder than words. Your sig block alone, still speaks towards your choice to use the accomplishments of others to add value to your own dogs as a selling point. What are your accomplishments with your dogs? What is your involvement in the basenji community?

  • dmey, I'll start another thread later about dog blogs I like. =)

Basenjiblogs, are you a member of the BCOA? I notice you link to them on your page, (along with BRAT), so I assume that these organizations have your support. Becoming a member of these groups, or at least BCOA, is one way to back up any claim of being a responsible breeder. That is what I would like to see as a puppy buyer, anyway.

BCOA does not endorse breeders. It has a lengthy disclaimer on the breeder listing. I don't think having an external link from this site to BCOA implies support. But, yes, being a member of BCOA is a step in the right direction, but not a guarantee.

  • Obviously you already have a litter so are a bit behind the "8" ball already, but as said, actions speak louder then words. Get you dogs health test and the results on the open OFA datatbase, regardless of if they are good or bad…. Hips, elbows, thyroid, CERF (eyes) along with Fanconi DNA, is a good start...

This along with placing pups on a spay/neuter contract unless they are going to be shown... which in my experience is pretty far and few inbetween.....

And I agree with Nemo, being a member of BCOA doesn't mean that someone is a responsible breeder, but it is a start. Also being a member of a local Basenji club is a good start also....

I always do the full panel. The issue is that a partial, you still only have partial. And if you suspect issues, you end up running them anyway. Of course it helps that a full panel here is not that much more than a partial (I think it was a bit under 60 or 140 for full). LOL though I did full on Sayblee because she WOULDN'T eat and full on Arwen because she gets almost nothing to eat in order to keep weight down. Both were fine.

@dcmclcm4: What kind of autoimmune problem does she have? Does she have any other eye problem or just the PPM strands? Jennifer @sharronhurlbut: So when you see blue eyes on a b, its PPM strands? Sayblee had autoimmune issues and had multiple surgeries to remove inflammations. She died 9/9/09 from Lymphoma after 5 mos of failed chemotherapy protocols. I actually posted about it here, think I even put up pictures. Arwen only has massive PPM strands. She will be 8 in 2 wks, thus far has been healthy as a horse otherwise. When I say blue, I don't mean REALLY blue as in pigment. I meant just so many strands they have very blue cast and you can easily see the strands in the light. The UGA eye specialist doing CERF said.. "wow, I haven't seen this many strands in a very long time!" He asked me to bring him back to him, FREE, to see how many went away after a year. Some did but she still has heavy strands.

Thanks guys, I did email Sue at apubasenji's and she forwarded my email to someone on the board who lives close to me. The vet I've been using is fine but I really don't think he's all that familiar with Basenji's and I would rather take my two to someone who is!!

I live in Boise, ID. Water and Gun dogs are popular. Sighthounds are not very popular, there is an active Greyhound adoption group though. Most vets in this town have a distaste for Basenjis, if they know what they are. My present vet, loves Basenjis. My former neighbor had an Afgahn, 2 cats and some ferrets. She had nothing but good things to say about the vet down the street. So I brought my hooligans down for an interview with the staff. This office treats about 6 other Basenjis. They had only seen the red and whites in person. They knew of the other colors, but had never seen them. So when I walked in with my red and white, black and white and tri, they stopped what they were doing to met them. They also knew about the African project. Those of us who are passionate about Basenjis are few and far between. Vets are the same way. When they are they passionate, their staff is also passionate about the breed. There might be 50 vet schools between America and Canada. This is a small community. Just start cold calling and asking what they know about Basenjis and who they would recommend.
