  • I sent this info on to BRAT.
    Thank you for the post.

  • Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you know about "Becca". She is a wonderfully gentle basenji, born on 9-11-2006. She has an endearing underbite (looks like the Denta-bone commercial), and perhaps a little cataract on her right eye. A gentle soul. If she was a real cat,she would purr. :) For the most part, she's potty trained, but absolutely hates getting her feet wet in the morning.

Her original owner surrendered her, intact, in 2008 because they had "too many animals". Based on the size of her little boobies and mammary glands, I suspect she had babies… but I'm no expert. :) Becca is tolerant of Lola's antics and loves to cuddle. The man who has loved her since 2008 is going through a transition in his life and could no longer care for her. I've had her for about 2 weeks.

Right now, I have a friend and a sister that have both said they want her... as a Floridian, do you think she will adjust to the snow? That's supposed to happen October 29th. She is a wonderful lady that is so easy to love.

P.S. She Roo's! Hopefully she can "teach" Lola, lol.

  • Thank you for opening your home up to this sweet b. I hope more folks will read this and go p/u a b in the shelter, even if its just for a short period of time.
Hugs to you, my unmet friend.

  • Very happy to see Becca has such a good foster - what do you think about a northern owner for her? When I visit my sister in New York state, my girl freezes her butt off, even in a heavy jacket - tried booties, but she wouldn't move with them on.

  • I live with my 3 Basenjis up in Canada - it can get pretty darn cold. Basenjis live here just fine, but they need clothes on if they're gonna spend a lot of time outside in the winter. Just for walks mind you, they can't live out there, they're not Huskies (I've got them too).

My 3 are very good about going out to do their business on even the coldest days, and they don't need clothes for that either - but they don't dilly-dally! In fact, most Basenjis prefer a snow storm over a rain storm.

And one of my Basenjis came from OK, another CO (but he was born in NM) so they do adjust to moving north.

  • Patty, Hooray for you for going and getting Becca and finding her a home (or choice of homes!). You really "walk the walk" of rescue.

  • She is still pretty young, she will adapt, I think to the climate change without any problems

  • Pat, you are probably right that she will adapt… if I can find the strength to let her go.

Sharron, thanks for the kudos, but in reality... I have a friend that's 65 years young, that lives in S. Fla. His doctor recently diagnosed him with Diabetes, and his doctor told him to exercise ASAP! Hopefully, with the help of prayers reaching his wife's heart, he will have the OK to adopt Becca!

In reality, I can't be a rescue volunteer. These charming dogs make it clear (rather quickly) that they don't fall into the normal buckets.
I hope everyone is happy in the end.

  • Becca is living in Milwaukee now, as my sister adopted her. She recently enjoyed her first snowfall, and from what my sister said, she became a baroo'ing darling!

Becca has also found a new source of fiber… apparently she (and Bacchus, my sister's other b) decided to unwrap the toilet paper- into the closet, through the plastic, lookout stomach, here it comes! :)

Not that you can tell always from pictures, but I would not say that this is a quality bred Basenji (conformation wise). So my guess from a BYB or PM/Pet Store

OMG Anne, ya think? Arwen isn't a delicate flower at about 25 pounds. Cara is probably 30 nor 31 now (taking in to vet next week to weigh), and Cara is tall. She also has longer body and longer neck so when heads are up she is about half a head over Arwen. At 8 mos old I wonder if I'll have a 40 pound dog when her body matures and fills out! Okay maybe 35. :( Where is my petite 17 pound bitch I hoped to have one day? LOL. Oh well. @Janneke: Sahel is a gorgeous girl! I hope she finds a good home soon! This is what I don't understand.. The pup is about a year old and the owner wants to get rid of her because: "I'll be traveling and working more this year, so I'm finding a new home for a beautiful and sweet female Basenji" What about thinking before getting a dog :( It is possible that the owner has a new job, something possibly unexpected especially with the sketchy job market in the US presently. In any case it sounds as if the owner cares about her and would like to find a good home.

Hard to say whether the breeder will take her back. I'll ask. The owner isn't willing to "give" Tiara to anyone, she wants the adoption fee. Tiara belongs in a home without other dogs or children, lots of one-on-one training, long walks for exercise, high quality/low-fat/low-carb food, and a stress free environment. It is disturbing that a six-year-old Basenji is looking at yet another home. I should stop looking at petfinder.
