High platelet count

  • Hello~~I'm new here, though not new to basenjis.
I have a 10 year old n/m rescue that is showing a high platelet count; platelets look normal, just way elevated numbers. My rural vet doesn't see any other basenjis besides mine and didn't have much to say about this, other than "it might be a bone marrow issue" and felt we could proceed with a scheduled surgery for lipoma removal.
Just wondering if anyone has seen this and what might be the cause?

He has been a little on the tired side the past few months and he has some soreness in his back and neck sometimes.

    Thanks for any thoughts!

  • What does the rest of the blood work show? Are all the other values normal?

  • Yes, the vet said everything else is w/i normal limits.

  • I would think that you would have found that he was a bit anemic… and I would be concerned with the change to being more tired... along with the soreness....

  • I can't help, but someone here probably can. Hugs for your hurting b.

Yeah, he has me worried, yet it doesn't make sense that only the platelet count would be odd in the CBC.

  • Online, there are several possible issues that can cause elevated platelet count:

    Thyroid
    Hemolytic Anemia
    Pyrovate Kinase (PK)
    Giardia

…but I can't find any illnesses that only exhibit that one spike by itself.

  • No need to worry about PK. He is much too old for that. Before I would start worrying unnecessarily I would see if the high count is repeatable. If it is, most labs have a pathologist. I rec'd your vet consult with the pathologist and see what they have to say about where to go (ie more testing, xrays, ultrasound, etc or perhaps he might say the elevation is not so great to worry about at this time in light of no other lab abnormalities.

    Good luck.

Just curious - is there an actual lump/lipoma somewhere on your b that can be felt or was noticed on any type of x-ray?

    Yes, he has several lipomas.

@beth314 I use the VetIQ MultiVitamin. WalMart sells it in the pet section and online. Sam's Club used to have it, they may in your area, but my local Sam's took it off the shelf.

@emilia Yes sighthounds often but not always test low. If their coat is bad, low energy and other signs of hypothyroid, a trial of meds won't hurt. But as with anything it varies, and you can't look at ONE thing. That's why having the results analyzed by someone who knows look at it. But the other 3 are normal range, and a low t4 has always been an issue with vets in the old days only testing for it, then medicating. Jean Dodds helped tremendously to push for full panels. -TSH - <0,005 ............ Normal range: Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) 0 - 0.58 ng/mL fT4 - 5,35....................Free thyroxine (FT4) 9 - 39 pmol/L fT3 - 2,2......................Free tri-iodothyronine (FT3) 1.2 – 8.2 pmol/L Cortisol - 45,3.............Cortisol, pre 15 - 110 nmol/L

@KhaiPan Pam and I are both stubborn opinionated people and without mutual respect, we'd be in constant battle. Instead, I love her. I watch her utter devotion to the dogs, to doing things right, to helping anyone who needs help. She isn't stuck in any idea... given proof and research, she'll reconsider. She is calming. :) Knowing you have someone personally in your corner navigating this helps a lot. Glad you contacted her.

Here is some info although this one is for humans it does say that dehydration and a high protein diet could be a factor http://www.netwellness.org/question.cfm/43722.htm the purpose for the urinalysis would most likely be to check for any signs of Renal/Kidney failure http://www.vet.uga.edu/VPP/clerk/mckee/ Also our veterinarians will have the owner bring back the dog in 3weeeks i think? to recheck the values in question

No known cause was determined. A couple years ago when she had a thyroid cancer mass removed an ultrasound was done of her liver and other organs and her liver looked fine.
