Lenny has high red/white blood cells in urine?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I always do blood work at least once a year… and urine too... It is the best way to know if something is going on..... Usually they will grow a urine culture for UTI, so you could do that ... but also sometimes they do not always show it.... and you may have just caught it as it started... I would do the Antibiotics and then re-check.....

  • Yes–I do both blood and urine regularly. They also do a test for crystals (which I think can turn into stones). I agree with Pat--do the course of antibiotics and then re-check. They don't always show obvious symptoms.

  • Pat-that's great advice! I never thought of running tests yearly. What test do you ask the vet to do?

A regular full blood panel, it is a standard test… Just tell the Vet you would like a full blood panel workup. Also you should be doing thyroid tests, however remember this will not be a complete one if just done with the regular blood panel, as it needs to be a separate test, sent to a separate lab.

By the way, typically the blood work will show if there is a possible UTI depending on the blood work for the kidneys. Then you can have a urine sample tested…

  • So we have come up on our one year mark that we got both of our dogs..aahh how time flies.

I'm setting up what I'm calling their "Annual Physical" :) so I told the vet that I wanted a Full Panel Blood Work and separate & distinct Thyroid Test.

I'm assuming they will be retrieving two separate blood samples for this?

I just want to make sure that I know what I'm talking about when I get there :)

    Thanks in Advance!

  • Yeah, I think they have to do a separate tube for the thyroid panel…and it takes quite a bit. They usually do jugular sticks (at least at my vet) to make sure they get enough...you don't want them to get too little, because the test will come back incomplete, and they will still try to charge you @@

I don't do a routine blood panel....only if somebody seems to have something wrong...but I do thyroid every couple of years for the breeding animals.

  • What I do is a blood panel when they are young as a base. Then only if they have something wrong… until they are 8 or 9. IMO, it is important to do the senior panels to see how the kidneys are doing... as they do start to slow down after the age of 8 or 9....

Sometimes they can get enough blood from one draw (they just draw it all at once and put it in separate vials for different tests).

  • Thanks everyone! Nothing like being an educated consumer..or patient :D

@tanza said in What are Blood Titers?: Benefits are that we are not over vaccinating our dogs. Do try to find a copy of 'Who Killed The Darling Buds of May' on Amazon or wherever ! By Catherine O'Driscoll, subtitled along the spine with 'What Vets don't tell you about Vaccines.' And on the back 'Read this book before you vaccinate your dog or cat.' ISBN 0 9523048 1 3 Very illuminating ! My first copy (this is another book I have lent out and had to buy again and which is now chained to the bookshelf) was sent to me by a very responsible and well-known breeder in USA.

Yes, the test for Lyme disease is a blood test. It is a special test that is not in the regular panels– they usually run it separately, after they rule out other things. I hope your B is better! Did you find out what was wrong?

My Basenji had this problem on and off for years before I finally found a good solution. I actually just posted about it elsewhere in here so I'm going to attempt to quote it in here. Let's hope it works lol. @mandi2doors: Copper, my oldest, has always had a sensitive stomach and would get diarrhea out of the blue all the time, so badly that he would have blood dripping from his rear. It freaked me out the first few times it happened! The vet always tried to prescribe an antibiotic but it never helped. The way I always got rid of it was to cook a pound of ground beef (rinsed), mix with a cup of cooked white rice, a cup of cottage cheese, and a cup of plain yogurt. You feed it for about 3-4 days (I always gave him about a cup and a half a day) and then start introducing their dry food back in. A friend on another forum gave me this concoction years ago and it worked perfectly for years. Almost two years ago he got diarrhea and any time I would stop feeding the mixture it would come back. I finally consulted a holistic vet and she said I could continue feeding the mixture but needed to add some veggies to it for fiber, or I could change his dry food. She said to avoid chicken, wheat, soy, and corn. She also recommended feeding a probiotic/prebiotic several times a week in addition to two other supplements, Gastriplex and Moducare (both by Thorne). He's been on Taste of the Wild now, which is grain free (I buy the fish variety but they also have a bison/venison as well as a lamb), and and has had no problems. I'm very careful about the ingredients in the treats I give him now and have had NO diarrhea problems since changing his diet, which is absolutely wonderful! Here are the links for what I use: http://tinyurl.com/27jaroe http://tinyurl.com/2adwtqn- 1 capsule 2x per day http://tinyurl.com/276rn24 - 1 capsule 1x per day http://tinyurl.com/2g47lsp - 1 capsule about 3x per week (I give it on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) Good luck!!

Vet said that he might experience fainting spells. I'm assuming that if blood is unhealthy, it can't do its job properly. Things like carry oxygen, nutrients and toxins to the appropriate organs. I'm hoping the best case is he will go from unconsciouness to death. He got hit by a car about 10 years ago and got his pelvis screwed back together. Other than that he gets around fine. thanx
