Hopefully Babies for Langarni Basenjis.

Breeder Talk
  • Very interesting. I have not seen many pregnant dogs (or overweight basenjis, for that matter) before. There's no mistaking what's going on!

I'll take a wild guess and say… FOUR! I have no idea.

  • What a pretty girl!! She's definitely pregnant :D I think she'll have four, three girls and a boy :)

You have to post pics more often!! They are great!

  • I'm saying 5 (3 boys, 2 girls)…btw, she looks much like my Ruby did when she was pregnant - like a pygmy goat! :D

  • She is glowing :), I love her belly bump. Pygmy goat is exactly what she looks like to me as well..
I think 4 as well, but two and two..
    Yes for more pictures..:)

  • LOL, she looks wonderful… and certainly pregnant!.... I am going to guess 5 also, but 3 girls and 2 boys....

  • LOVE her preggy pictures! Thanks so much for posting them. At the six week mark it really became very noticeable. My guess is 5, but I am saying 3 boys and 2 girls.

  • Thanks everyone…

Im very happy with my gorgeous Ochre's pregnant tummy :)... She is doing very well, no morning sickness, just still crabby with anyne who comes near her !!! I think I felt some bubbies moving last night. Cant be 100% sure, but I think I did :)...

Im glad nearly everyone says about 4-5... Ive had a couple of people say a bit higher, but right from the start Ive thought 5... Im hoping for a nice boy for me, then all the other orders Ive got are for girls, so if I could have 3 boys to choose from, the rest girls, I will be VERY happy :D

Booked for an x-ray for Monday 21st, which is also piccy day, so that will be interesting...

Just a question ??? For those that x-ray the week prior, do you need to sedate the bitch for the x-ray ??? Not at all something Im going to do, but it has been mentioned ???

  • They do not need to be sedated for the x-ray. Rally, TC, and Rio were all good for their x-rays.

  • Mine were never sedated for xray…. no problem at all. One tip I will advise is try and make sure that she has "pooped" before the xray, as the feces can "hide" or blur a pup.... or at least they have on mine.

  • Thanks guys…

I did think it was a bit excessive, so I just wanted to check... I cant imagine it being a problem, with her moving on th table, she's really finding it a bit difficult to move at all :).

Good tip Tanza, will make sure shes as empty as can be !!!

Whelping box is half done, Mr Saba is doing a great job on it... Very happy :)

  • Well we are just back from the Vet, after having Ochre's x-ray…

She has 6 little 'buns in the oven'... I thought she had popped out a lot from her 7 week photo. She is 8 weeks today... Will get that pic up soon I hope... Just need to wait for Mr Saba, who is currently finishing off the whelping box :D...

She is day 56 today, and as a maiden I have no clue what her birthing pattern will be like, so I was wondering what day should I start to take her temperature ??? Have heard that B girls like to go closer to day 60 than day 63, any truth in that ???

Getting very excited, but very nervous too :p

  • Did you do progesterone testing? The one thing my girls actually seemed to do "by the book" was whelp 63 days after ovulation based on their progesterone tests.

  • Yep she was prog tested, she was 35.3 I think, (not sure what that is in your scale…), the day she went from here to Melbourne, for the mating... She had a 35 minute tie that night, and that was it. She came back to Tassie 2 days later.

Forgot to add in my last post that the U/S found 2-3 blobs... So many of you ended up with double what the U/S said... I guess Ochre must have a little hidden American blood in her, either that, or she was listening to me when I was telling people, cos she doubled what seen as well :D:D:D

  • Ok, this afternoon at 5pm, I took Ochre's temp and it was 37.4, so thats ok, I just need to keep an eye on it… Its now 11pm, and I was going to go to bed, so I thought I would take it again, and 15 mins ago it was 36.9, so now Im just starting to panic, wondering if I have managed to actually catch her drop, before the babies are to be born

Dont think I will be getting much sleep tonight, or am I starting to panic too early ??? :o

  • According to my vet, their temperatures normally lower at night. She told me to take the temperature once in the morning and once at night and to try for the same time so then if it dropped compared to the other readings at that time then I would know to be prepared. Rio was opposite of what she said to expect, warmer at night and colder in the morning but she was very consistent.

  • Thanks for that Ivoss…

I have decided to go to bed, but she will be coming with me, and I think I will be sleeping with one eye open all night !!! Thankfully I am a very light sleeper ;)

  • And my girls never "read" that book about temperature!! period… we never found a pattern and Maggii's temp never dropped

  • Oh..I am so excited for you and nervous too..it will all be good..keeping my fingers crossed and sending good vibes to all of you..keep us posted.:)

  • Not long now!! I hope all goes well.

  • Thanks guys…

So far no action yet. She has eaten her breakfast, and is otherwise behaving quite normally. Dont think things will happen for a few days yet :)... Will keep you up to date when things begin :)

It depends on the cat just as much as it depends on the dog. Does your cat run "prey-like" when frightened? I have 2 cats that have lived with 3 different basenjis. My male cat and my first basenji were pals and often cuddled together. They would wrestle and when the dog got too unruly he'd (the cat) nip him to keep him in line. My female cat ran every time she saw my dog. She was fun to chase and like most basenjis: "thing move, I chase thing!" Cody never ever hurt them and recognized that they were part of his "pack" (for lack of a better term). Cat outside? FORGET IT! He never caught one but boy did he try! My cats no longer live with my dogs (I moved and the cats stayed with my parents) and I know my female cat is much happier. Elliot my 3yr old is OK with my cats but Morgan my 1yr old chases them. Neither try to hurt them but the stress of being chased is a lot for a 15 year old cat to handle. [image: 1469113808168-1003649_10151420270322531_1939276400_n.jpg]

Everyone pretty much already covered what I was going to say :) I spoke with Toni before I got my boy because I am from Maryland. I ended up going with a breeder in Florida because at the time, that's where I was living. If I were to get another basenji pup though, I would definitely go to Toni. She was so great at answering any/all of my questions & also was very forthcoming about information regarding her dogs & her home. She offered, more than once, for me to come see her dogs while I was back in Maryland for vacation last winter.

@Kipawa: Boy, I will put my flame retardent suit on here before I say this - in the picture of the four basenjis, well, they look so unhappy. ALL of them. I sympathize with the breeder in that she has some medical/mental restrictions, but the look of the breeding facility frightens me. If she has medical/mental restrictions she should NOT be breeding. And I agree about the conditions of the kennels. They are dirty and unkept. And as said, if there are no papers/unregistered AKC then she should not be breeding.
