Our first yodel

Basenji Talk

  • It was bedtime a couple nights ago and I had just put Noel in her crate. I turn off all the lights and sat down in the family room and turn on the Television. All of a sudden I hear a noise that sounds like an instrment playing from noel's room. I look at my husband and say…Was that Noel. It was the most beautiful noise. Unfortunatley I have not heard it again.

  • That's great. Hopefully you'll hear other noises soon enough. :D

I've only had the joy of hearing these weird growls. He only does it when he's excited. Hard to explain the noise but it's very random.

  • If your little one is making noises, chances are she will continue. I have never heard my B yodel - she only whines and mutters when she doesn't get her way. My B-mix however, barks, yodels, barroos, and makes all manner of odd noises when the two are playfighting. I keep hoping that she will eventually sound off, but she's 16 months and nothing yet.

  • In 3 years the only time Sonny makes any noise is at my mother when he visits their house. When she comes in the door from work he yodels, barks and sings for her. It never fails every time she walks in the house. For me he does nothing!

  • Houston

Don't you just love it? Otis has been yodeling more now, after he turned one, than ever before…usually when he wants something.

  • Hope Noel continues to yodel for you, it's such a lovely sound.

Ewww. I have gotten those kind of surprises too, with my cats. They have given up on rats because they have gotten very sick from eating them, but birds seem to be fair game. And like what Hope did, it always seems the head and legs are left. I guess the middle parts are juicy. Now, that is a great way to get your Hope used to having her teeth brushed. :) Just leave a few tooth brushes out around the house. By the time you really want to get into a teeth cleaning routine, she will love it!

There's something invigorating about cold snow on little basenji toesies! My Abbey loved all the snow we had last winter (unusual for us) but she was terrified of the neighbors' snow man!!

My Red boy, Congo, had an awesome BAROO! We were so happy to hear it every time! He couldn't do it enough for my amusement! I don't remember at what age the BAROO's stopped but I'm thinking 14 or 15. When he was in his prime, I think he yodeled at least once a week. Bandit, my 7 year old tri girl, has never BAROOED in her life! She purrs like a cat and cries like a newborn baby, but never a yodel. Hunter, my 2 year old BRAT tri, has a great yodel. His voice usually cracks mid-yodel. Almost like he was a heavy smoker at some point in his short life! He also had the loudest yawn on the planet!:)

Oh to have a silent Basenji. Our Bitty has, unfortunately, learned that the loudest dog gets fed first, and yips and yodels from the instant I move toward the garage door (where we have to keep their food) until I put her dinner before her. Her other loud period is every evening when my wife comes in the door from work, all 3 of the puppers flock to her and vocally announce 'momma's home' at the top of their lungs. It must be wonderful to be so loved, ha ha.
