Richard Hayden of Fairbanks Alaska but seeking dogs throughout the US, most recently in California and Florida

    Phone number: 907-378-2807

    Email: flyingrichard@ hotmail.com

Richard Hayden is currently seeking dogs throughout the US, from rescue groups, shelters, and from private individuals via sites like Craigslist. Rescues and shelters are often impressed that he is willing to adopt at such a long distance and assume that someone willing to spend so much money to get a dog must be a good home. According to some of his information he lives in an RV with three German Shepherds. In other applications he states he lives in a house with a yard. Sometimes he says he has one dog, in other cases no dogs. He is an experienced con man and knows what to say and how to work the system. He has groups of devoted followers on Internet forums who think they know him and believe that he?s a good home.

    The truth is very different.

He has adopted countless dogs that have since disappeared. At least 3 dogs from rescues have died within weeks of arrival in Alaska. He told the rescues that two of them died of cancer (after being in perfect health and vet checked prior to sending) but he has been unwilling to produce any veterinary references to support his claims. The third dog supposedly drowned. He has adopted several other dogs from Anchorage and Fairbanks animal control that have since disappeared. He has potentially gotten many other dogs from Craigslist and similar sites.

He usually has multiple ads in different cities running. He will typically back off when rescues and shelters request a home visit or reference checks but is savvy to adoption screening systems and is good at manipulating well-meaning people to pull dogs for him. He flies a small plane and sometimes comes for dogs himself, in other cases he has them shipped to Alaska.

He prefers German Shepherds but is known to have taken Labs, Pit Bulls, and a Malamute mix. The dogs he gets are always large breed spayed females. He prefers dogs that are overweight with passive, docile temperaments.

  • I wonder his reasoning for large breed spayed docile females. A**hole.

  • I've seen this warning on a few sites and can't help but wonder if it's real or a hoax.

If it is true, I hope he slips up somewhere and gets nailed.
If it's not true but he's a real person that someone is slandering for whatever reason, then that is a horrid shame.

I've been trying to dig around and find out something concrete, but all that I ever see are these warnings everywhere.

I was kind of thinking the same thing…this would be an easy way to damage someone that you just didn't like....

I got this from a different rescue site, cross posting is something they were keen on doing..to get the word out.

  • worrying….....

  • I'm so lost I don't get it .. So he gets dogs and does what with them ?? I'm extremely tired so i can't think too well right now but I don't get why they have a warning on him??

Right, I've seen it on rescue sites from Florida to Washington, and even on Craigslist. But that doesn't mean it's legit.
The only posts I've seen on sites where it actually appears to BE this guy, are from 2005 when he was looking to get a GS from a rescue.

And why no word on what he does with these dogs? Is there evidence he's gotten dogs and they've disappeared?

Too many questions for me right now.

I cannot imagine committing to buy a puppy without seeing the animal and if possible the sire and dam. OTOH, a rescue (or adoption of an older dog) is a different thing. My last two Basenjis came to me sight unseen, and turned out to be wonderful dogs, but the breeders I got them from wanted to place their dogs in an experienced Basenji home, and I only paid the cost of getting the dogs to me. One came by air, one was personally transported to me by his breeder. If she hadn't been happy with what she found I expect she would have taken him back with her when she left. I also had to commit to return him if ever I couldn't keep him. Good breeders care about where their dogs end up.

@kembe - Very True Kembe, here is a link on looking for a responsible breeder. https://bconc.org/finding-breeders-red-flags There are many scammers out there, don't fall for one.. or a person that is not a responsible breeder.

@Kembe, nice post! We've gone to solid food chopped up in a food processor, but we're grinding it a bit more course as we go. So far, no puppies are choking, but good to know!

Sometimes Kids come to "strange" ideas about what to do with a pet. Therefore it always should be obligatory for the partents or other adults to have a close eye on what is going on there…. Marbles in dog ears are also no fun to have... In Germany there is a huge political discussion against so called "dangerous breeds" because a few accidents with such breeds have been pushed through the press and tv. There are hard laws on who is allowed to keep these dogs and who is not. There are partially very high taxes you have to pay in several areas when you have a pit or amstaff or kangal or whatever they think is a "dangerous breed". But there are countries which play it even harder: for example a while ago you where not able to travel from Germany to Holland with a Staff-Mix. They would have taken the dog from you and maybe put it down without you being able to do something against it. But as far as I know, this law has been cancelled....hopefully... Regards, Esther
