Pumpkin Shortage

Basenji Feeding
  • OK everybody this thread is going off topic from pumpkin shortages to sweet potato recipes. Let's all calm down here and get back to the subject. (-:

  • Wouldn't any kind of squash work? Does it have to be pumpkin or can it be, I don't know, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, hubbard squash….?

We used to grow all of those when I was a brat ankle-biter kid on the farm. (And zucchini...lots and lots of zucchini... I still have nightmares about fried zucchini, zucchini soup, zucchini bread, zucchini zucchini zucchini:eek:)

Here's Belinda being forced to draw zucchinis.:D

I think any of those squashes would be fine.

  • Yes zucchini and fried green tomatoes and rubarh pie yes greens picked from yard looked like weeds. What about homemade bourbon balls at holidays?

  • I knew I should have put this thread in the off topic section. :p:D

  • Sorry Nemo the zucchins did it set me off on old time foods. Got my pumpkin pies in Sara Lee boxes today just in case.

  • The most hilarious thing about the photo is that little girl could pass for me when I was her age…at least pass as my sister. :D

  • I haven't given Cody pumpkin, but he loves sweet potatoes, thankfully. We have had an overabundance of sweet potatoes this year, and most of them are huge (3-4 times the size that they usually are). We've actually had them with dinner so often in the last few weeks, we've joked about writing a book entitled "1001 Ways to Cook a Sweet Potato". I usually make a pumpkin cheesecake for the holidays, but I will have to try the sweet potato cheesecake.

  • another kind of pumpkin shortage? I mean short pumpkins…

That little girl is somebody's cute little pumpkin. :D

  • Normally I am not a fan of sweet potato pie, but this place in Chicago, Soul Vegetarian East, makes a vegan sweet potato pie that is to die for.

Edit: Rob makes a really good zucchini pizza crust too.

  • AgileBasenji..
Thank you so much for that recipe..the Cheesecake one..
I just made it for tomorrow and oh..my, I wonder if it will make it until tomorrow..it looks so good..and smells to die for..
    Again, Thanks

  • oh, man, send me a piece. we're going to a friend's house, and i wasn't "required" to make dessert this year. I do think i'm going to make red velvet cupcakes for Digital's birthday (next month), not that he can have any, but i do like the red velvet cake and it'll be the last night of my control unleashed class, so there's that.

anyway, that cheesecake is just delish!!!

@Saving said in Anal Gland Health Diet Adjustment (ideas?): scavenging on walks has increased though and that's quite annoying. LOL, omgosh! The amount of food tossed on the ground is astounding! And doodle will grab it up before I have any idea it's there! I wish I had a picture of the day she pulled a (whole) bagel out of a bush!

I had a somewhat similar experience. Joey had a seizure which I correlate to taking Simparica. He looked terrible so took him to the vet when the first seizure happened and he was late Stage 2. Put him on Royal Canin kidney kibble and Hills kidney wet food and 4 years later he has only had 1 more seizure and his kidney values have remained constant. I will believe your homemade version is most likely better if you have the correct proportions. All the best to your Bs! Joey will be 15 in November.

I know this topic is old, but I give my B freeze dried salmon bites as treats. I usually find them in the cat section

8 mos old is still on Royal Canine medium size puppy as recommended by vet. Very interested in how you change up their food. Glad to hear that because I would like to change him from chicken based to something else as adult. Had always been advised not to keep changing food as it was hard on their system. Breeder advised to use high protein and fat dog food (60% protein, 30% fat). What is your opinion on this? I am starting to add 1/2 tsp coconut oil daily to dog food for winter feeding. Advised it had ingredients similar to mother's milk. What say you about this?

We give Shaye about a heaping teaspoon of pumpkin in her kibble to firm her stool, and it has helped with the anal gland issue. Also cottage cheese helps, as does a little sweet potatoe. In the first instance, when she had really bad problems, I mixed up drained boiled hamburg, rice, and cottage cheese - she loved it and cured the loose stool situation in about a day and a half. I found you can buy sweet potatoe patties in Walmart, and a half of one heated and mixed with her food in the morning, the other half in the evening, makes her eat it all up right away. Since we've been doing these things, she hasn't had anal gland problems and her stool is always firm.
