If you have more than one Dog Do they work together to get you up in the Morning?

Basenji Talk
  • We have two dogs. One of them is a Boston Terrier and the other is a Basenji. We have noticed that if the Boston cannot get us up in the morning then she will go wake up the Basenji and get him to help her or do her dirty work(so to speak). For those of you with more than one dog, do the work together to get you up or communicate something to you if one of them needs to be let out or something?

  • Short answer yes, they work together.
2 b's work even "better?" together.
    Laugh.

  • Yes, once Otis is up, he goes to see if he can get the Schnauzer pup up, after that it is full on in our bed, two dogs, two kids and of course the two of us..makes for a very "happy" morning..

The dauchshund, nah, he rather sleep in.

  • It's the other way around at my house. I have to figure out how to get the dogs out of the bed.

  • What's really funny is that after Roo gets me up, he goes right back to his bed, he really doesn't care to go out, he just does it for Bonzo!

  • I don't have more than one dog. However, when I was 12, I lived with my grandma and her three B-girls: Bubbles, Echo and Eclipse. We decided to get a cat to help out with the mousing. In the middle of the night one night, there was a horrendous shriek from the living room. Gramma and I ran out to see what the –----??? In the corner was Eclipse, with a limp rat hanging in her mouth, sitting on the couch was the cat, proudly licking his paws. We put it together and figured the cat chased up the rat and the dog was lying in wait to make the kill. Great teamwork!

  • Nope.
Mine are rather bright. They know that if you hold it as long as possible, the bed and your butt stays pretty darned toasty warm!

  • Like Nemo, my 3 like to sleep in! When I do get them up and out, they are right back to bed when I leave for work.

  • My boys don't. Cody wakes up way too early for Moe. On cold mornings, Moe actually steals Cody's spot on the bed when Cody gets up. He doesn't need the help anyway, he has learned that the easiest way to wake someone up is to pull the blankets off of them.

  • Jaycee the B and Spice the Shibu and Bo the Pom they all sleep in we sleep to 10:00 a.m. they do to but when we do get up look out. The parrot even sleeps in as long as we do.

  • In my house, the puppy usually wants to get up first (so much to do, so little time )…the adults just ignore her until they are ready, and Liyah usually will go back to sleep or play with a toy until I get up.

During Liyah's heat, Brando would get up because he was so restless - Ruby and Liyah would ignore him or growl at him if he disturbed them.

Ruby is a lounger, she is usually under the down comforter until I get out of bed and pull the covers off her :D.

    My 3 act very independently.

  • The only one who will actually make noises to go out, is the old heeler x. Since she drinks about 6 cups of water in the morning (at least in one sitting), she really needs to go out. But the Basenji's and the boxer won't move until they have to.

  • @Nemo:

It's the other way around at my house. I have to figure out how to get the dogs out of the bed.

Same here. They have to be shoved outside, then run back in, and go right back to bed. And if we make the bed before they get back in it, they un-make it to get back under the covers!

  • Gemma gets up early, walks the house, and eventually comes in to get me up, then keeps bothering Shaye until she gets up. Shaye would sleep longer if it were not for Gemma being an early riser - and so would I!

  • @Nemo:

It's the other way around at my house. I have to figure out how to get the dogs out of the bed.

Same here :) I can leave the house without them getting out of bed.. After me leaving BF showers and then it's his task to get the pups out of their bed :D

On a Saturday it can happen that I want to sleep late and then the are both standing against the bed to wake us :)

  • I get up at 4:00 AM to work out before work so I am the one who wakes everyone up.

  • If I get up real early, I get dirty looks from those who aren't under the covers, and the ones under the blankets will snark and make all kinds of noises if I disturb them. I like to gently play with the Basenjis under the covers and they get so mad at me! :p

My old Eskie likes to sleep in the back of my SUV during the day - he is so worried I might go somewhere and he'll be left behind. In the morning, he sleeps with one eye open watching me!

Must be because mine are pretty much puppies they get up earlier. If I try to wake or move Gemma, she gets growly and whiny in her sleep - sometimes I mess with her in the night just to hear her, it's so funny.

  • We call that "playing the growlaphone", getting that nice rumble from a sleeping basenji lump!

If I get distracted after I get them up and don't open the back door right away, Nemo usually decides it's not worth it and runs back to the bed and I'll have to get him up again!</big>

@emmett Hope you're still reading our responses. I'm impressed that you're doing research and reaching out to people who have the breed of dog you're interested in. In my opinion you're doing exactly the right thing. I also like that you're considering a Basenji. I really hope you'll keep that seed of interest in the back of your mind, and that when the time is right that you'll revisit having a Basenji. As other have pointed out, and you've concluded... a Basenji may not be the best choice for where you are right now. Another thought might be to find a local dog park, go there, observe the dogs, the way that they interact with their owners and see if particular breed looks interesting. Some are laid back, some are high energy, some crave attention, some want independence, etc. Watch them. Get use to spotting the behaviors that you want in a dog. Then, when it comes time for you to choose your dog for life, you'll be better prepared to spot the personality, or temperament as we call it, that best fits where you are in life. In turn you'll be making the best choice for your new pal as well. We have great members here with decades of experience breeding, training, showing and co-existing with dogs. I hope you'll stop by anytime you have any questions at all. They don't have to be about Basenjis. Good luck and let us know if you get a pup!! :oncoming_fist: :slightly_smiling_face:

In your position, where you really have to take her out a lot, I understand. And I hope her comfort continues. My point was it is situational need, not dog need to be that social. :) I have a slim chance of that having worked with my current 2, but with my incredibly dog aggressive first one, I'd have been out in a basket muzzle and warning everyone to keep their dogs away.

LOL on the entire repertoire. That was my chow/coyote. I would just wait til she stopped and give THE command (or give it again if she started AFTER I had given it.. but most of the time she started the second she knew I had a treat) when she was ready to listen. But it was cute.

Everyday between 5 and 6am the Basenji alarm clock named Zoe goes off. Some mornings she has a squeaky yawn and then looks surprised when the noise come out.

Owning a basenji requires a good sense of humor and a large dose of patience and a willingness to do some creative thinking to convince the basenjis what you want is really the same thing as what they want. So true, never a dull moment with these dogs
