Yep, quite a few times Buddy will do it on walks when he thinks he sees something or hears something in the trees like a squirrel.

  • Thank you Dan I am happy now I thought she was messed up like crazy.

Otis points more times then not. Even when he sees our other dogs at a distance…once he realizes who or what it is he releases and goes to check it out..

  • Zoni points quite frequently. She goes crazy for almost anything that moves.

  • YEP and when my boys point, they look at the other one to be sure they see it too… like " hey do you see what i see?"
then of course we go CHASE too. especially on cool, crisp days... smells must magnify. lucky me!

  • Chafuko points too, I never saw Buana point at anyting but Chafuko will point even for a toy.. :D

  • Shaye points very often when we are out walking - when she sees another animal she will stop and point, always the left front leg. Glad to see other B's do this as well - she looks great when she does this - head in the air, paw curled up - the whole body at attention. When we got Gemma, the B mix who is now Shaye's big sister, I was surprised to see that she does the same - I guess it is part of their nature.

I cannot imagine committing to buy a puppy without seeing the animal and if possible the sire and dam. OTOH, a rescue (or adoption of an older dog) is a different thing. My last two Basenjis came to me sight unseen, and turned out to be wonderful dogs, but the breeders I got them from wanted to place their dogs in an experienced Basenji home, and I only paid the cost of getting the dogs to me. One came by air, one was personally transported to me by his breeder. If she hadn't been happy with what she found I expect she would have taken him back with her when she left. I also had to commit to return him if ever I couldn't keep him. Good breeders care about where their dogs end up.

@sanjibasenji Thanks for the article on Dog Genome Project - I found it very interesting. I was trying to figure out the interactive Genome wheel. It has the basenji closely related to the Azawakh and rat terrier but I’m still trying to figure out the first wheel which has the basenji listed w/ black/grey starting point. As far as the PBS Dog Tales video - it’s very interesting - it’s season 47 episode 2 - I highly recommend you watch the whole thing (54 minutes).
