Best time to neuter?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • My puppy bitch came into season today at the age of almost 9 months.
I do not intend to breed from her and will be getting her spayed.
As basenjis usually have only one season a year, is there any particular time I should get this done or does the same rule apply as for 'normal' dogs?

I would do it about a month after she goes out of season… while they typically only come in season once a year... they don't always read the same books that we humans do....

I know, her mother has decided to become a twice-a-year girl at the age of 4 1/2!

@zande - That is so true Zande, when you have a pack of bitches, the one "low" on the totem pole may be the last to come in heat in many cases... "want a be's" many times will come in first... depends on the pack.

@italeigha I've tagged this pamphlet before so you may wish to search the forum for the link which may still work. https://my.puppyculture.co.uk/resources/flipbook/spay-neuter-booklet It's full of facts and studies and Liz McCargo uses it as her reference. There's a free read-only version if you'd search: PUPPY CULTURE SPAY/NEUTER BOOKLET. Title page attached, if allowed. [image: 1640079058258-2.jpg]

Read all the quotes and statements on Fanconi and work out how contradictory it is for yourself. I don't think many UK Basenji owners do a Fanconi 'strip monthly' and certainly some breeders do advocate no test. Are such breeders irresponsible not necessarily. A 'probable' diagnosis on any medical condition is hardly a scientic diagnosis to say the least but testing is better than not and is certainly better than doing nothing.

@Nemo: Zoni is now conditioned to wake up when the alarm goes off, crawls out from under the covers, stares at the nightstand as I get the marshmallow out, and then retreats back under the covers to go back to the sleep after she has had her pill. It's a pretty smooth process now. :D laugh They learn quick, don't they? Sounds a lot like my shiba. Minus the crawling out from/back under the covers bit. I just hope he doesn't get bored with the ritual since it's gotta work for the rest of his life!

Totally unrelated. Jabari, I can't tell you how it warms my heart to hear "aloha" and "mahalo". Oh warm and fuzzies :) My family is still on Maui as my little sis is only in high school. Our Riley is getting the big snip in probably about 10 days. Poor little guy. I think it's the non-laser kind. We haven't had a comprehensive exam w/ the new vet yet but she comes highly recommended from a breeder out here. I just wish she accepted AKC's comped vet visit certificate you get for registering :/
