  • Punishment can work to deter a behavior but it can also increase aggression. Also punishing a dog for giving low level distance increasing signals will increase the likelihood that the dog will escalate to higher level signals and bites.

If your dog is not comfortable at the dog park when Dobermans are there then you shouldn't be there when there are Dobermans. Rolling him over is only reinforcing that the Doberman is a "bad thing" because every time he is around your dog gets rolled over.

  • when there is a doberman in the park i take my guy or the other guy goes to the other side of the park there they can get to know eachother throught the fence!!. but i just cant have them on the same side of the fence!!. and he's like that to the doberman is because he was attacted by one there!!. that don't come out there any more but he seems to thank all are mean and he goes on the defens with them now!.but now just this past fall he was getting to be friends with a doberman named toby and they played together for a 1/2 hour!!. the other doberman thats goes there is kinda standoffish trys to test other dogs there. and his owner don't know what to do to stop this behavior! just they chase eachother through the fence! and only throught the fence!.

  • Taking your basenji to a gentle basic obedience class will help you and your b learn to work together. Its very important for the basenji to trust his owner. If the owners are not consistant, then the b will have issues. Training any new dog with a class is the way to build a loving relationship.

  • thed only thing is if there are other dogs there he might try to fight or want to play mostly !!!!! do they do it with just me & him? and how much is a training class!!. thanks so much for all the help!.

  • Basic obedience classes prices vary, but you can ask your vet if he knows of one.
There are often a few other folks there, but your b is on a leash, and he learns to watch you and the signals you give. He learns to be with other dogs with out playing for fighting.
Its very good all round stuff. Let us know what you find and how it goes.

  • Here is a good place to start to find a good basic obedience instructor.

  • tanza,i got the resaults !not good he's at risk! what does that mean exsackly???> does it mean he has it or is going to get the fanconi disease???> please help and if he gets it what can i do to help him live a good life???>

  • What was the result? Probably Affected?

  • Affected can be hard news to take, but there are ways to watch for issues, and some b's, altho showing affected, never have fanconi crop up.
So, there is lots of help here, don't lose hope.

  • it was risk!!!!. my mind is in a whirl wind!!!>

  • i just dont'know what to do right now!!.i have been crying my head off.!! he hasnt'shown any signs yet but i was just he was tested as risk!.

  • "risk" is not a diagnosis. It should be Probably Clear, Probably Carrier, Probably Affected, or Indeterminate Between Carrier or Clear.

  • hi get her tested for fanconi. go to the web site ofa.org. and order the test it's 65.00 but it's worth knowing if your girl has fanconi!.

  • ivoss, is there a way i can get the test done again with out paying the $65.00?????? !! so it dont'mean he has it!?. how can i find out for sure!?? test again>????

Oh My! So sorry! I know if it were Pearl I would be terrified! Poor Baby! I want to cry fo him. If you love him half as much as I love Peal, I'm sure you are devistated. (And I am sure you love him a much as I love Pearl) I pray Shango is fine and has no permanent injuries. Hugs him for me.

Well, Tosca is just fine I think:) I was kinda worried last night, as the emergency vet said it would probably be ok since she only had half a pill, but they said I could call poison control to be sure. Well, that was going to be pretty expensive (55) so I wasn't too crazy calling about half of a pill, plus she seemed ok, and the vet seemed pretty confident. Then this morning I was a little worried again because she wouldn't eat more than about half her food, which is extrememly unusual, she usually gobbles it right up! But I had to go to work, and I called our usual vet on the way and they said it shouldn't be a problem. Luckily, now that I am home tonight she seems fine:) Thanks for the suggestions, we just got Tosca in Feb and this is the first time I have ever had a dog ( I was deathly scared of them as a kid) but she really has grown on me, she is so sweet, and not like a normal dog.
