Size of kennel

    Hi all,

    I'm going to have a Basenji soon (more or less, still some months to wait ;) )
    I think a dog crate could come in handy some times, but I'm not sure wich size could be suitable. The dog should not be caged for hours, but it should be comfortable.
    Can you give me some advices?

    too big is not good as well imo, as a crate should be seen as a hole, the pace for the dog where he can retreat and it shouls be safe and comfortable, ofcourse not small but also not too big as it isnt then much of a hole anymore is it?

    and as a dog should not be crated for hours anyways I dont see the use of a very big crate for a basenji, he doesnt have to be able to run miles in it :D My crates for the basenjis are about 90 x60 x60 or something like that.

    Tillo's is 120x90x90 cm. But Tillo likes to move around, reposition and have his legs all stretched out and in weird positions. We don't use it anymore btw.. Tillo likes it better when he's loose and can decide for himself what's comfortable and safe. :rolleyes:

    all basenjis do, but a lot of owners disagree with the basenjis opinion of safety and design :D

    my dogs dont go in crates also, except for when I have one in season then I have to crate sometimes one or 2 dogs ( most of the time the female in season , they really want that then, I think because it is natural for a female to have a hole where the other cant come in that time )

    Cody's crate is about the same size, but it's the wire kind.

    That is the same one we have for Jaycee. She only sleeps in it but we did have to leave her alone once for about one hour and we put her in it.

    Otis have that same size, but his is also the wire kind.
    He crates great, if needed, but loves to sleep in it at night with the door open. None of my other dogs have even stepped paw in the crate, they know it as his room.

    I have three basenji'sj, One crate, wire, no soild sides, when Belle was pup, 8 weeks she sleep with us, when she started taking over our bed, we moved her into the crate in our kitchen, we stuffed it with towels, fuffy bed and covered it with a sheet for a cave experience, she loved it and went to bed on her own all the time. The new boys took the crate over, she sleeps by herself.
    Just go bigger, if your in Houston, Arnies has the best prices on large crates and very helpful.

    I prefer the enclosed plastic crate vs the wire because any accidents stay inside and there's a gutter that runs along the inside perimeter for urine to go to. Buddy once had bad diarrhea in the crate and if it had been a wire crate it would have gotten all around the outside of the crate in the house. A male can lift his leg on the sides and pee right outside of the wire crate. Plus the plastic crate can be used outside in the summer as a dog house.

    Both my boys have been resues so I didn't know much about their crate training. I was told they both were crate-trained! Neither liked it at all!! I used both wire and plastic and both boys managed to escape, the little devils. However, when I came home to find them escaped they were just happy I was home and had not gotten into any trouble, i.e. shredded furniture, clothing, etc.(of course the trashcans are always up). After that I just left/leave him out all day while I'm at work. No worries. Should I knock on wood now?? Take all said with the proverbial grain of salt, I've never had a puppy!!!

    thanx for your answers. I think I'll try a wire crate with 926368 cm. Covered up with a blanket and cushioned it should feel like a comfortable cave. I hope the puppy will accept the crate as a refuge and fine place to sleep.

    But you never know ;-)

    I think as long as it is a puppy and you make the "cave" a happy place to be, they will learn to go in and actually want to hang in there. Make it matter of fact, not optional.

    I used to hike frequently with mine, and considered getting them backpacks so they could haul some of their own water. However, when I did research, the recommendation was not to give them more than 10% of their weight to carry, which would be less than 2 lbs each for my girls. I decided I could carry that 3.5 pounds of water myself quite easily. So I don't have any recommendations, but if all he is carrying is mail, I think any of them would be fine.

    I'm really sorry you are in this situation and I understand your guilty feeling.. I do not agree with what is said above about dogs sleeping all day and not caring about how much their humans are there with them as long as they are loved… (sorry..) If I were you I would think hard about keeping him or not. If you know your situation will not change and you can find someone who can offer him more, I think you are doing what is best for the dog by giving him a new home. If you believe this situation will only be temporarily or if you can't find that better home, then you can try to make things a bit better for Tucker by giving him more quality time in the morning. I believe 20 min is too little time to get the energy out of a 2 year old pup. After an 8 hour sleep during the night and before 11 hours of laying in a kennel/x-pen during the day a dog needs a lot more than 20 min.. If you could get up earlier, you could try to walk/cycle Tucker for like about 45-60 min? I think loosing some of his energy will also help with him being less destructive when loose in the house. Mabye you can try to find a nice neighbour/family member/etc who could walk Tucker during the day? Even if it was only one day per week, that's better than none :) Also, if the daycare is too expensive for the entire week, maybe you can only bring him one or two days per week? Just thinking out loud here :) I hope I don't sound harsh.. And I hope you find some ways to make it a better situation for Tucker and yourself.

    My other alternative was to have my dad stay at our house for a week, but we ran into the similar issues - so many rules to explain. In doing some research online, I also found this site www.abka.com. It's for the American Boarding Kennel Association - this is how we found the kennel we chose. It's a good resource. I also recall reading something online about how it's safer for them to be at kennel than to have a friend or family member watch them. Just imagine if the dog ran out and got loose - a pet sitter would have a very hard time dealing with that. If they are in a kennel, they are secure, safe and well taken care of. I'm leaving better about our decision to do this, but I know I'm going to cry! :)

    Wow…. fantastic thread, glad I read through this. I recently thought about finding a good place as an option for the event I need to go out of town and can't find an in-home pet sitter. The caretakers in my building have been fantastic sitters, since they live in the building and just take the elevator down a few floors to check up on him. Unfortunately they are leaving and most likely are retiring. So I need to find another option. There's a kennel nearby, aprox 1-2 miles from here (talk about convenient), that has been around since the 1940's if i'm not mistaken. Great people, have used them before with other dogs (years ago), but called them up today to get some current info. They have had basenjis before (which is good to know) and every single one has always been boarded by themselves, and never with another dog. They seem to understand the needs. $25+tax/night for him to be boarded on his own overnight. Doesn't seem too bad, but now I have a backup option. Nice thing is they also offer a free trial board in the middle of the week to see how they react. They screen for vaccinations, etc.
