Help Kais in Hawaii

There is a Basenji (Mix) in need here in Hawaii on my Island. On of my friends went to the shelter to rescue a dog for their family and Called me frantic "Kira, there is a Maverick here!!" I called the shelter and asked about the basenji they had. Hes SO precious! The Poor guy has heart worms so no one will adopt him, he looks so sad in his picture. I did contact BRAT about it, but the shelter said theyre going to be putting him down soon which BLOWS my Mind! I have a home and yard open for fostering Kais until November when Maverick gets here (tho ill ALWAYS have an open door to a B in Need) But Im concerned about how to re-home him! He has his own fund at the shelter for his medical needs, tho I dont mind getting him the care he needs at all! I just dont know what to do and there doesnt seem to be any BRAT contacts in Oahu. I also signed up on BRAT.com to be a Foster Parent. My concern is pressed time. Im going to visit Kais today at the shelter and discuss fostering him with the shelter. Im just hoping Brat gets back to me soon, Kais Needs Us… If anyone has any information that could help Kais and I please let me know! Thank You! Mahalo!

  • Looks like a mix? and I think the listing says mix?

  • That's what I thought especially with the ear sorta flopped over.

  • Did you get any response from BRAT? Anyone in the area who can help??
The reason I am not able to look it up myself is that I have 2 b's in PNW.
One 7 mo old, that I am working on today.

  • Yes he is a mix, but to my knowledge, BRAT rescues Mixes as well? At least the website says that. No one has contacted me yet, but i did go visit him. Hes a sweet guy and has been there over a month. I talked to the manager and she told me his Heart worm treatment is completely covered by a local vet! So I really dont know why he seems to be un-adoptable :( IM still waiting to hear from BRAT. Im sure theyll call soon!! :)

  • GOOD NEWS!! Made some calls, Kais has been adopted by a wonderful Family! Thanks Everyone! I am going to volunteer as a foster home for the HI humane society I wish i had done this before! I didnt realize how many poor animals just need a place to run :( !!

  • Aloha from your Hi BRAT Rep,

Heartworms is a real problem in Hawaii. Lately, there has also been a real problem with Basenjis showing up in rescue. I picked up Buster K Basenji (3 yo, purebred and microchipped, but dumped nevertheless) at the Hawaiian Humane Society in January. He also had heartworms. He's been treated and has been looking for a home since. Unfortunately, an adult dog is very difficult to place. An adult, mix is almost impossible.

I still have Leddy, Nicky, Joey, and Merry (out of Jack and Tia) who are now 13-14 year old ladies who still do 3-6 miles per day. The rescues are Dotty, Merlyn, Bob (B-mixes), Martin (? mix), Pippin (? Chi-mix?), and Buster, who brings us up to 10 dogs. That's the city limit and I'm unable to help with the B-mix at the Humane Society. Anyone who fosters in Hawaii should understand, it could be for a long term.

Someone (local breeders or imports from Australia through PetsCentral) was selling purebred Basenjis for $1000+ and many ended up in rescue (1-2 every other month this spring) about the time they are 9-12 months old. If I can find out who's putting out these dogs that end up in rescue, they'll have hell to pay from me.

  • Hi nahele,

Ive just seen this and I am disturbed to see that some Aussie imports are ending up in Rescue over there, on your beautiful island… Especially if they are going through PetsCentral, (I am presuming this is a pet shop type of thing ???)...

Im sure our Clubs would like to know about this as would the ANKC, (obviously if this is underhanded Importing, of course :)), so if you need to have an underground Aussie PI (who would love to help...), just let me know :)

Our local Humane Society collects dog food donations (even opened bags) for distribution to those who can't afford to feed their pets. I try and drop off a bag once in a while, but I forget. Thanks for the reminder!

Sometimes as a rescue person, the kindest thing we can advice, or do, is give the dog peace of the rainbow bridge. I have had to do that in the past…thank heavens, not for years. Its never been something I have done lightly, but I have never felt it was a wrong decision. The only decision I could do to give peace to the dog...
