Two Frights in 12 hours !!!

    Well I think im going to have to be VERY careful with my new little minx, Vanda…

    Last night I was in the middle of cooking dinner, and I opened the kitchen door to throw a bag of rubbish into the porch... I always do frequent checks of where the dogs are, so I can keep an eye on what is being eyed off for the next destruction session :).

    I found Saba, Ochre, and the ACD, Nosh, but I couldnt find Vanda. I casually strolled around calling her. No response. ..Gradually getting more and more panicy. Called the kids to come and help... Finally found her sitting patiently OUTSIDE the loungeroom door :confused:. I am nearly 100% sure that she didnt get out while I threw the garbage out, but, I couldnt think of any other reason :confused: I worked out she was possibly outside for close to 10 minutes :eek::eek:

    Then this morning, I was emailing a friend, and I heard this ruckus from the loungeroom. It sounded like the cat was trying to get in or out of the catdoor, very clumsily... I stood up to go and see what was going on, and racing over to me, at a great rate of knots, was one VERY WET Vanda... She has a coat on, and it was drenched :mad:. I followed the wet paw prints, and sure enough it came from the cat door, straight to me... This little *^%#@#, (insert any swear word here !!!), had obviously gone OUT the cat door, and had played in a water bowl outside, again for about 5-10 mins, then just came back inside...

    You need to know that we live on 13 acres, of largely unfenced bushland, so the opportunity was there for her to wander anywhere :eek:. Im so lucky she didnt go far. I am also wondering now, if she got out through the cat door last night too :) The cat door is broken, so it currently has a crate, (what else), in front of it, so no more outside explorings for her !!!

    Still trying to calm my racing heart... Is it too early, (at 11am over here...), to have a stiff drink ???

    Oh my, I'm glad nothing happened. Wow, if she is this good a sneaking around now, imagine how good she'll be when she gets older!

    Stealthy little fuzzballs, aren't they?? I often do a "dog check" when he's not where I "thought" he was. Especially if I've opened a door. Even if not to outside, there are just places he shouldn't be!!

    I'd fix the cat door (and throw out the cat – just joking) maybe with some sort of barrier around it so the dog cant' get to it.

    And it's always noon somewhere so go for the drink :)

    I am so glad that Vanda is alright. All of my puppies learn the cat door quickly and we have to put a barrier around it so the cats can get in but the puppies can't. If she is not a climber then you can use a ex-pen or something similar. Luckily our cat door only goes to our closed garage since our cats are indoor only but still plenty of trouble for pups to get into in there.

    Well the clever hoomans managed to keep Vanda inside over the last 24 hours :D.

    Nemo, that is exactly what went through my mind, and let me tell you, it scares the $*(^ out of me :D. I think this little lady will be keeping us on our toes a lot more than Ochre and Saba do :p. We were prewarned by her breeder, so I guess I will have to do extra checks on Vanda alone…

    wizard, I was thinking exactly that same thought while I was typing, the stiff drink I mean ;)

    Always say, opposites are best... are these littermates? Even with opposites, many times littermates are a problem... as they competed as babies for everything.... and we say, it works till it doesn't... Is there a reason you want two of the same sex? and you need to be prepared that if they don't get along you will need to separate... I was very lucky but very concerned about the two bitches I got at the same time, 2wks in age apart... I looked at the temperament of both before deciding... and LUCKED out... I have one very confident bitch and one not.. but they have meshed well together with the confident bitch not concerned with being "top" in the house, she knows she is but doesn't need to prove it.... still it took till my one bitch had puppies to prove to me that she was OK in her skin and have remained friends since... even with her puppies. IMO (in my opinion) unless you are looking to breed at some point, not worth the chance... been the other route too... and it is NOT fun

    @Flash: Good to hear of another Aussie! The breeder I got my basenji bitch from and will get my second b from is: Kay and Ross Eldred from NSW - both lovely people and wonderful with basenjis. Where abouts are you? I'm in Canberra. I'd love to hear more about your expanding b family - particularly whether your 2 basenjis are working out well together. Well, well, well, what a small world it is ??? :). Saba is by Kay and Ross's gorgeous Zulu, out of a Wazazi bitch, and Ochre is by their stunning Rusty, also out of a different Wazazi bitch :). I think I like my Wazazi/Jebelmarra puppies… I only just, (a couple of weeks ago), emailed Kay, after Rusty's fabulous win at Sydney Royal... I am in Tassie, about 35 kms south of Hobart, on a wonderful 13 acres, with my hubby, and 2 daughters... The B's love it too, although no free running on the property, for them :p, but we have a large fully fenced, (9 feet high), off lead area, for them and the Cattle Dogs too.... I got Saba first, and really had no thoughts of getting another for a while, Yeah right !!! 12 months later, along came Ochre :D. (Im very glad they only come into season once a year, or Dog knows how many we would have by now...). Now another 12 months and I might be getting another, I must have rocks in my head !!! Perhaps you will do the same thing too, and get another one next year :D. They are very moorish, arent they ??? A bit like chippies, hey... We had no problems at all with introducing Saba and Ochre. Saba was a touch put out, but he was soon playing very happily with his new pal... They get on very well together. Ochre takes everything in her stride, and I think Saba would love another little girl in his harem... I dont predict I will have any problems, if I do get another little girl, (thats what I am hoping for !!!), this year, either. Ochre is a very temperamentally stable little lass, who would adjust quickly to another girl, I think !!! Also, during the last 4-5 months, we have added another Cattle Dog as well. He currently lives in the house with the 2 B's, and he is about 6 months old now. Ochre gives him a hard time, and does get a little cranky with him at times, otherwise she is ok. Saba was being very dominant with him, in the house, so in the house they arent let out together, (either Nosh, the Cattle Dog, or Saba is loose, and the other is crated...), but they are happy to race around the off lead area we have, together, which Im pleased about... Saba isnt as tolerant with other dogs, particularly other males, but, we deal with that ;). They are both our first Basenji show dogs, we show the Cattle Dogs, which we are enjoying. Saba is having a few issues on the table at the moment, and we are working on this, and Ochre is showing very well, with pleasing results so far :). She is going to be a very slow maturer, (thanks Rusty, and to a lesser degree, her Mum Electra :D), so her time will come later :). My OH and I lived in Canberra, in the early 90's, both nursed at Woden Valley Hospital. Great memories of the place. First in Waniassa, (sp?), then Bungandore, (sp?), till we came back home to Tassie... So what is the breeding of your first Jebelmarra dog ??? Then obviously the next question is, who is the potential parents of this years puppy ??? Looks like we will be able to pass the time away, firstly, hoping for our new puppy to be conceived, then "grown", then born, then the VERY long time waiting to get it at 8-10 weeks. I think I am ahead of you slightly, cos Electra was mated on the 16th April, your guys are "having fun", at the moment, I think... SORRY ;):p:)... Gee, this has turned into a bit of an epic :D

    Sounds like a heavenly environment for pups! Yeah, I don't think I'd like to have my b named after a cut of meat either :rolleyes: We named Fiji to sound like her previous name Weegee and she adapted easily. If we bring Peanut home he may become Pinot. Red wine, red dog, y'know ;)

    We have three. The second we got to have a playmate for our first and the third we got because we fell in love with his pic on BRAT (I am no longer allowed to go to the BRAT website ,,,,lol). Three is definately challenging but they all get along most of the time and have given us endless hours of laughter and joy (as well as some very frustrating times!). If I had it to do over again I would definately do everything the same. Just make sure you have the time and resources for a 2nd b. Our first has had some vision problems and the others have to be vetted periodically and it can get a little expensive. Also, with two and three it almost takes two sets of eyes to keep track of them sometimes. One last tip,,,,if you do get a second ,,,baby gates are a must to keep them corraled!

    I would not reccomend doing that, fights start over the slightest things. Too many things can go wrong…...seperate cartes is the way to go IMO.:)

    @jys1011: Cute :) But PLEASE do everyone a favor & find Lil Hussy's owners. She can get killed by car, animal, disease, etc. I agree 100 %. There are several dogs who run the neighborhood and we can't seem to get the owners to understand the dangers. One fellow, not the little JRts owner, actually said that he lets his dog out in the morning and if he doens't come home then it was the dogs fault for getting in the wrong place. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUGHGHGHHGHGHH. Sorry, it didn't help. I live in a rural area and the town is small. A lot of folks don't think of dogs a companions or part of the family, they think of them as disposible things for lack of a better word. At the end of hunting season, our local animal control, pitiful though it is, is full of hunting dogs that either slipped their collars or worse, were taken off their collars and run off since they weren't "huntin good". The majority of these dogs are euthanized withing 72 hours which is hard, but better a quiet death than starving to death in the swamps. I think I have figured out the house where this little JRT female lives. From what I can understand, the father works in a town over an hour away, the mom is a flight attendant and is rarely home and their child is kept by the grandmother. This family needs a dog, like I need to gain back the 70 + pounds I lost!!!! Another neighbor who is great with dogs and works hard in the neighborhood to help take in lost dogs and I had a long chat tonight. She called animal control but they told her they couldn't do anything unless they saw the dog off leash or out of its yard. I forgot to mention that my friend is an older woman with a heart condition and takes her small mix breed female for a walk every morning and evening. The little JRT female will come running up and jump on and nip and bite my friends dog and when her dog tries to get away or fight back, my friend gets tangled in the lead and has nearly fallen. She is getting scared to go out with her dog. She said that this morning, when she spoke with a different person at animal control, that fellow told her she was calling the wrong place, that she needed to call the police since she is in town limits. We both shook our heads. I told her that I was tempted to go to the family and see if they wanted to get rid of the JRT and if they did, take her to the Vet Hospital to see if she has had any shots or has been neutered. The only thing stopping me from asking them for her is I have used up a huge chunk of saving on Beeji and I don't know how he would take to another dog in his new home so soon. However, I am planning on talking to them about why they are letting her out and not keeping her in the fenced area they have. I will work on keeping my temper and try to use all my mediation skills. Pray for me and/or send lots of positive energy my way!! Aloha, Cheryl Wordweaver saddened by the ignorance of humans who get dogs because they are cute, or are popular or adorable as puppies but never take care of them, give them training, love or attention. :(
