New testing

  • I think it's just nice to tell my story :D

I just signed Buana in at a DNA fingerprint test, as he is a stud, lot of breeders ask for a DNA profile to see or to have a copy..
So within a few days, we receive a swab-test and then after 4 weeks he has is own official DNA fingerprint!
We already tested him for HD, theroid and eyes, his parents both are prob. clear for fanconi but we're thinking about testing both boys also for ourselfes..

And about a few weeks, we're going to plan all the health testing for Chafuko,
    HD, Theroid, eyes, and DNA.
So i'm exciting about the results of my little Brindle baby..
If everything is good, he wil be available too but I think it's nice to know the results for ourselfe!
Our vet can't wait untill we're coming with our clan.. he is totally in love with the Basenji's…. (I worked there a longer time and even now he send his assistents away and let me assist even with the HD pics!! too cool)

    We'll see! I'll keep you updated!:D

  • Congratulations on getting the health testing done!

Since the Fanconi test is only a Marker test there is no such thing as Clear By Parentage. All dogs being used in breeding programs should be tested prior to breeding.

Yes, that's why we want to test our boys too. It's nice to know the parents are clear but we want to know for sure :D!

  • Well! Great news!

We just made plans to test Chafuko in the near future but we had to plan that a little bit earlier!!!! :d
Chafuko has been asked as stud!!!!!!
I won't tell much more at the moment because I first want to know everything for sure :)
It sure is a fine breeder, makes al the health tests and the bitch is tested prob. clear for fanconi.

But about the testing, we just enterd our forms at the OFA site for both boys (parents are clear but the stud dog has to be tested himself so we also entered Buana)
This thursday we have an appointment with the vet for his eyes testing, hips, theroid and ha..

Does anyone know whats the time between entering the forms on the OFA website and getting the test at home?

  • Houston

Wow, congrats. I will keep my fingers and toes crossed that things turn out. I was told on y post earlier last week that it takes about 3-4 weeks to get results back, but sometimes even faster. I am waiting for Otis's results as well, so I am eager to know when they are coming..

I would think that they mail them out pretty quickly, and it is just a small package for the swabs… but I don't know how long international mail takes...

  • Another update!

Yesterday we made everything clear on both sides and the bitch that should come to holland (it's a bitch that lives with an other family) seems to not have had het reabies shot..
She can't come to Holland next month :( We and of course the breeder are very sad because everything was already fully arranged..
She sure wanted to use Chafuko, so we tried to find out if we should be able to come to Sweden with Chafuko. But also he has to be rabies tested before he can go…

No we have new arrangements for next year :)
Chafuko will become a daddy of one of her own Basenji's (a very pretty red and white female)
This lady is a bit too young for breeding this year, otherwise she maybe had come to Holland with her. (and two litters are a bit busy)

We're so proud of our Chafuko..
We sure have to be carefull with the litter... or we'll end up with another B... hahaha

  • very exiting Kim :d

  • Conrats to all future Chafuko?s girfriends! It smells like new basenji puppy to your pack:)))))))

  • @Petra:

    If it?s up to me…. :D

I'm happy I've a husband that knows the limit for now.... hahaha
3 dogs, cat, baby on the way... hahahaha
I always said: The first dog thats coming to our home is a Wolfdog.. so... that won't come out of Chaufko.. (but a puppy of your own dog... aaaahhhh well maybe)

  • Buana - have you considered collecting Chafuko and using the chilled semen AI? That way neither dog would have to undergo the stress of travel.

    Terry

  • OT (sorry!)….Isn't rabies a mandatory shot over there?

  • We are required to do rabies here in the states.
    What are your rules?

Rabies is not required here in the Netherlands, only if you are planning to travel to another country. For Sweden and Norway you need to get the rabies shot very early and after 4 months you need a bloodtest. Dogs are only allowed to enter the country when the titer is high enough. Something similar for the UK, but then one month between shot and bloodtest.

We never considered that, I will get information about that (for this time it's too late but for a next time) I'ts always good to know.

The b/w are certainly interesting and look really cute - I know Jon saw them on a previous trip but they were very elusive. He told us that when he came to give a talk at our club show. You're very lucky as many of you'll, I assume, have the opportunity to see them 'in the flesh' in the future. I hope we'll see a lot more pictures.

@sinbaje: The one that comes to mind - to the best of my knowledge - should not have had anything to do with the reliability of the results (it was done in 2009 - 2 years after the start of public testing in 2007 when most kinks should have long been worked out). Of course being 2 years after public testing began, I can not think of any legitimate reason for the need for research nor the need to keep it private, but then I am oftentimes guilty of giving too much information vs not enough. ;) I'll see if I can find the reference I am thinking of and if so, will ask - assuming I did not already. Will have to look. Hi Linda - Not sure exactly what kind of situation you're talking about - so will give a general summary. Fanconi research is continuing and we are still using research samples, and gather new samples. Work is primarily to develop a direct test (the current test is a linkage marker test for multiple markers) but also to keep an eye on performance and accuracy of the current test. So getting new research samples in 2009, 2010, and 2011 is expected and needed. Research uses validated dogs that are anomalous and verified affected dogs, usually using new testing technologies. Goal is to develop a direct test and, in the interim, if needed, to improve the existing test. OFA is not funding the research and is not doing the research testing, so they can't tell you anything. OFA handles payment, reporting, and publication of results for the production test. Samples ordered for research are handled separately from OFA samples and are not paid for. They are often blood samples, in some cases fresh blood only, but not always. If you pay OFA to have your dog tested and sign a release form, his results will go into OFA's open database. If a research sample is tested, it will not. For research samples, most I know of were either for known affecteds, to be used to refine the test, or retests to verify a test was of the right dog, or tests of a cluster of relatives to verify parentage where a parent is deceased and DNA is not on file. I can't offhand think of cases where the production test would be done for research for anything except retesting a dog with an anomalous result. In that case, if the result was different, it would be corrected; if not, nothing would happen on the OFA side. For Fanconi, in general, at this point, if Gary is testing a sample or samples for research, he is either using testing methodologies that are not in production (mostly working on getting a direct test) such as whole genome mapping or improved SNP chips, or he is verifying parentage, or he is retesting an anomalous sample to make sure the right dog was tested. A fair bit of that is in the Health Committee report which is on the front page of www.basenji.org, click on annual meeting powerpoint and scroll down to the HC part. I don't know if this answers your questions or not because I don't really have enough info to figure out the specific situation. I can pretty much tell you, if it's a research sample, OFA probably knows absolutely nothing about it. They are not part of the research process right now for Fanconi. They are in the pay/test/report process for the validated Fanconi test already in production. FYI, the Health Committee email list is open to any BCOA member and you can ask questions there at any time. Lisa

@KiroGurl: how much would a red boy cost from most breeders? whATS THE AVERAGE? In the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic, I'd say a safe estimate is around $1000 - $1200 for a puppy from a responsible, reputable breeder. Personally, I haven't found there to be a lot of variables with pricing when you go to a responsible breeder. Off hand, the only real difference in pricing I've seen seems to be that it does vary by region of the US - kind of like everything :D. If a breeder is pricing by colour, male vs. female, or AKC registered/not, I'd immediately look for another breeder - personally I would consider those red flags and RUN. There may be breeders that charge differently for pet vs. show, but there are plenty that don't - none that I've encountered do. A good place to start to find a responsible breeder is always the BCOA breeders directory at basenji.org. And don't forget to verify health tests on offa.org

Haha a Basenji breeder making profit that´ll be the day if one makes end´s meet(hmm is that english)one should be so lucky.I´m not a breeder but my boy has been used for stud this fall and just paying all the shows(gas, show entries etc)the extensive health testing hips, eyes, fanconi, thyroid panel including TgAA wasn´t cheap. Can assure anyone that his stud fee won´t make me rich but that´s not what i´m intrested in i´m more curious seeing what kinda puppies this combo will give and if he passes on his qualities.
