What size Crate?!?

We use an all wire kennel 24"H x 30" L for Otis at home and he seems to love it and there is room for him to grow. In the car we have a slightly smaller plastic varikennel and he does not love it, but safety is more important than Otis' thoughts on that kennel…

  • Gonna bump this topic.

In a Basenji book i bought they recommended a 69x51x48cm (27x20x19 inches) crate.

But reading what you guys use they seem larger than that.

These are the dimensions of Bendji's crates (he has 2 of them ;))
    76 x 54 x 61 cm and "he fits" comfortable in them :)

Otis ' crate is 30"x21"x24" he also fit s roomy in it, mind you he is only 5 months old, but large at 20+ lbs.

  • We are looking at a 20 x20x28 stainless steel kennel by edemco ($140)as HAnsel has eaten the vari kennel and the travel air kennels we have. i think he would break all his teeth on a wire kennel, maybe not. Unless someone has a better idea! Suggestions???? :)

Jonny B, as far as the crate you were thinking about getting, it sounds like what we have for Otis, as far as it being all metal. Could you maybe spray the bars with no-bite, tea tree oil or something that will deter him from biting on it..so his teeth won't get hurt. Of course I would spray while he is not in it so he doesn't get soaked.
I will check into a car seat type harness, I think he would like taht better, thanks for the idea Medik.

I have found this english page.
Our dog like traveling with this harness. I think it is safety for him and for us.

  • If chewing on the metal bars is a concern, I would spend a little more and get a Kennel Aire professional series. The wire is in 1 inch squaresso they can't really get their snout/teeth around them. I have 2 of them…the pup can still get her nose & teeth thru, but neither adult can. I have a Commander (which they don't make anymore) and the professional and the only difference is the latch...and they seem to be the most secure crates I own. Eventually all my crates will be switched over to them and I'll donate my others to a shelter.

  • I have sprayed and sprayed with bitter bite. doesnt faze him. he just goes crazy and squeals and paws and claws at it. he is always quiet when we get home, but i am going back to school in august ( i teach) and he will have to have some solution we can both live with for 8 hours a day…. i will search the kennel aire. thanks!

  • i looked up kennel aire and that is like one he chewed a hole big enough to get his head out of…. do you think i was looking at the wrong one. do you have a picture or a web site? thanks so much.

  • MY BAD. i was looking at the plastic , not the wire. there are no prices on them…

They vary in size. I had dreams of a nice 18 pound bitch. My bitch won her championship, svelt, at a good 25 pounds. Her niece, our 2nd basenji, was this hard muscled machine and she topped 27 pounds at her best. (Sadly steroids from 4 yrs til death made her usually closer to 32 pounds.) I was at a show about 18 yrs ago and saw some part African basenjis that looked even bigger. But the European and US standards for size are almost identical (1 pound heavier for females in US). As for the show ring sizes difference, someone who shows internationally can answer. I just know from rescue that most that I see tend to be bigger, not smaller, than standard. The FCI (European) Standard: SIZE AND WEIGHT : Ideal height : dogs 43 cm (17 ins) at withers, bitches 40 cm (16 ins) at withers. Ideal weight : dogs 11 kg (24 lbs), bitches 9 1/2 kg (21 lbs). AKC Basenji: Height: 17 inches (male 16 inches (female) Weight: 24 pounds (male) 22 pounds (female)

The only thing I have found that will hold Corin is a Kennel-Aire Commander crate, because it has 1 inch squares on all 6 sides. The new Kennel-Aires have larger sqaures on the bottom, and he has figured out how to slide the tray out and get out the bottom of the crate.

Interestingly enough, there has recently been a discussion about crates on the CleanRun list. CR is working on obtaining some high end crates to sell. Everything CR sells is tested by the CR staff. I am not sure how they are going to crash test these crates, but I am anxious to see them. I have a feeling they may be the solid metal (Al?) crates I've seen that are VERY expensive, but we'll seel I have used Kennel Aire crates in my van for years. Why Kennel Aire? http://www.newworldbasenjis.net/kennelaire.htm I also like that the KA crates have one inch squares. That makes it harder to suck things into the crate. @tanza: The problem being the Basenji that chews through the seat belt harness in 30seconds or less. So hence the muzzle Yep, I happen to know for a fact that one of the most expensive things on a 73 VW bug is the seatbelt! For those having problems with getting your dog in a crate, I believe Susan Garrett's Crate Games talks about that. I think it's at the end of the dvd.

I think as long as it is a puppy and you make the "cave" a happy place to be, they will learn to go in and actually want to hang in there. Make it matter of fact, not optional.

The only reasons I would not crate little bs with big bs is (1) I don't want any fighting so you would have to play that one by ear (2) If the little one potties in the crate accidentally the big b has to suffer too. But I only have 1 so thats all I could think of

Owning a basenji requires a good sense of humor and a large dose of patience and a willingness to do some creative thinking to convince the basenjis what you want is really the same thing as what they want. So true, never a dull moment with these dogs
