Crate Question

Basenji Talk

  • Hi all,

As ive never crate trained before , ive been doing my research and would like your opinion on the crates available and which one you think would be better.

Ive attached pics, I do like the soft dog crate better than the wire one, however if the wire one is better that is what i will go for.

    Thankyou in advance

  • Wire or hard plastic definitely! I have both. The fold-up wire ones are nice if you want to travel with it. The soft one will get destroyed within a very short period of time. I got a soft one for travelling once and it lasted about 1 day! Nemo dug into the canvas in one spot and in a short time wore it away and could have easily escaped out of it after that given more time.

  • Your soft one will be chewed through in no time. Some b's have even chewed through the heavy airline crates…so stronger is better with a crate.

  • Wire is best..

  • thanks heaps, now that i think about it wire would be best, i agree it would probably only last a day

Home is a dog's "territory" and sometimes they will protect it as such (especially against other dogs)… Possibly the breeder is concerned this would be an issue. Maybe she would consider meeting somewhere "neutral" with you and some of the dogs...

Indy has a "Large" size wire crate from walmart. We decked it out with a king size comforter, two fleece blankets, and a life size "puppy" stuffed animal. Then we throw in a deer antler and two of his favorite stuffed toys and tell him to have at it. So far no problems. The other cool thing about this crate is that dh made him a "deck" ontop. We put the kennel next to the couch so he can climb up the top and onto the deck. He hangs out there and looks out the window all day long sometimes. When he was younger we put the divider in, but once he showed us that he knew pottying in his crate was not ok we just let him have all the room. So far so good.

@soulmate: Did not know that. But what for do you have to answer then the whole questions, when you register with the CPP? And yes, it would be helpfull, if you would be able to see in which country the B's are registered if they are not in the US. Regards, Esther Because CPP uses that data for other studies.

I was surprised by how thick the whiskers were! She was finally a bit sleepy and left the scissors (I tried a small nail scissors this time) so I got the annoying one trimmed, but I was surprised at how the scissors barely got through it! Oh well, its dumb but at least now there isn't this annoying long hair hanging way down off her chin :)

@Jylly18: THanks everyone for the advice, she ended up being fine, I fed her this morning and no throw-up when we got home :) I was just worried cause she has never done it more than once before. Its funny about how you said you put her over the toilet, my husband managed to hold her over the garbage when she threw up, so she looked ridiculous but at least it made no mess! HaHaHa! That conjures up a picture!

Mine usually tuck their noses behind their legs when they are curled up… much like my avatar. :)
