To kibble or not to kibble …

  • Today, Bendji becomes 12 weeks old and his first 3kg package of kibble is finished.
Good moment to start a try-out with a whole new food programme …
This morning I switched my boy from the kibble thing to the fresh Puppy Growth Menu from Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats.
Here are some of the ingredients: bulgur, fresh hamburger, fresh cottage cheese, eggshell powder, Healthy Powder, torula yeast flakes, fresh salmon oil, vitamin E and grated bio carrots.
We will monitor him for two weeks to see how he reacts to the ingredients (for instance the yeast tolerance) of his new food.
After this period I will either decide to continue with this menu, eventually making some changes to it, or to switch back to a good brand of kibble…
It's definitely more expensive than kibble but hey, don't we all want the best for our furries ? :)
    So let's give it a try !
    I'll keep you informed !

  • No raw diet for Bendji? ;)
    What's 'healthy powder'?

  • Hey Janneke.
We tried chicken wings for a few days and the only result was diarrhea !
So maybe it's better to move more slowly towards BARF
The approach of Dr. Pitcairn towards healthy food for animals in casu dogs and cats seems logic and reasonable to me and he uses raw meat in his recipes so that's a plus too.
Healthy powder is a mixture of the following ingredients. He uses it in all of his recipes and… I tasted it myself and it's not that bad at all ;)

HEALTHY POWDER (recipe copyright of Richard H. Pitcairn,D.V.M.,Ph.D.)
2 cups (1 cup=250 gr) nutritional yeast (no beer yeast !)
    1 cup lecithin granules
    1/4 cup kelp powder (zeewier)
    5 teaspoons eggshell powder
    optional 1000 mg vitanin C (I didn't use it)

We just have to monitor Bendji for a few weeks to see if he does react positively to the yeast because some animals are allergic to it.
And so far he loves it !! (in fact he loves everything that's eatable hahaha);)
If you have more questions please feel free to contact me for more info.

I agree. Feed'em raw! Meat and bones!

That is precisely why I didn't feed them together generally– raw was a meal, kibble a meal.

This was the answer from The Honest Kitchen, via their Facebook page: Me: _This article came up in a discussion on one of my dog forums: (link) It was pointed out that the Honest Kitchen appears to use a pre-mix, given the list of minerals and additives at the end of your ingredients lists. I know you have a very thorough list on your website about the countries from where you source your ingredients, but I was wondering if you could respond directly to the concerns raised in this article about mineral and additive sources?_ Their answer: Great question! We have an affidavit from our premix supplier that ALL the components are from European and North American Sources with the exception of one, which is from Israel. The components are blended right here in the USA. As with every ingredient in our diets, no part of our premix is derived from or has even been near to, China.

@pacificNWbasenji: Hi folks! I have recently switched kibble to Nature's Domain from Costco. The salmon & sweet potato variety. http://www.naturesdomainpetfood.com/ I've noticed the dogs have become itchy, my girl more than my boy, and am surprised because I have had them on a variety of the popular grain free kibble varieties. Origen, Acana, EVO, Taste of the Wild & Fromm's - and they have had pretty much every flavor/ingredient combo made by manufacturers. I have not had a reaction to any of them except for stool consistency/color which is due to the richness of the kibble varieties. I really like the value of Nature's Domain being it is less than $1/pound. I know a lot of basenji/sighthound people that feed this kind of food and haven't heard anything other than good reviews. Has anyone else had a similar reaction? To my knowledge neither of them have any food allergies, as they have had salmon & sweet potato on previous occasions and included in other kibble formulas without a reaction. Even after long years the link is still working.. Thanks for posting the link.. I'll try and look if there's a reaction on my dog's too..
