Do you take your basinji hunting?

Basenji Talk
  • I know that there are a few people in America which take their B's for hunting. But in a "educated" way, if you know what I mean. They do not throw the dogs out and tell them to do what they want. They are used for pointing prey as far as I know. I just can remember one dogs Nic name. Maybe someone else in this forum knows more details about this. The dog I know about is Black Axe Axel. I translated a story about him from English to German for the German Basenji Club Magazine. But I can't remember the whole story.

    Regards,
    Esther

  • Several people here have basenjis that naturally hunt in the backyard - mine have all caught rabbits - but are not specifically trained to hunt for us.

  • You might want to do a search on "hunting" on the forum (I did it, but there are a lot!) and read some of the more specific posts. I remember a while back it was discussed.

  • Yes, Jeff Schettler hunts with his Axel and Ru. I've also heard from others that they know of some people who actually hunt with their Basenjis but don't know any others by name. Jeff is on the west coast, and I might know of some on the east coast.

If you're interested, Jeff has a Yahoo group for discussing natural traits like hunting in Basenjis. Basenji Native Traits Preservation Project:

  • Great info everyone…....thanks for the contact kiroja.

It was not a pleasant split….. we are glad that Judy is still here with Ru

  • Wow, I am really sorry to hear that. :(

  • "It was not a pleasant split….. we are glad that Judy is still here with Ru"

I found it very disheartening to be pointed to a discussion about hunting basenjis, join the forum, only to see that my personal life on display by people who don't really know me. The details about my dogs and their work is really nice but Pat Fragassi's comment above was uneducated and slanderous.

I have stayed off the public basenji forums in the past due to spurious comments such as Pat's here. Such provoking threads, though great for a Peyton Place type environment, are actually cruel and mean spirited.

For those that want to read between Pat's lines, please understand that she does not associate with Judy or I in any social circles. She is not a confidant and obviously not a friend. She knows nothing of what she writes and is simply trying to get a reaction.

Just received and read my copy. I loved it, but I want more stories! There are not many stories, but they are funny, had me laughing out loud, and so true about Basenjis. Definately worth it.

Thanks Guys. Hiding it in a piece of beef is working today. I did the three pieces sneaking it in the middle one technique. We will see how long it takes him to catch on.

The last couple of days the highs have been below zero (yesterday and this morning it was -14F/-26C when I let EL D out to go potty with two coats on). Yesterday in the early afternoon he whined and whined to go for a walk and I wasn't going to go but in the end said okay. Put his and my coats on and made it down the driveway and to the mailbox and he was pulling hard to turn around and get back in the house. He learned his lesson I guess - no more whining the rest of the day! :)
