Hi Hoot,
Welcome to the forum. I wanted to introduce myself to you because I too adopted a dog for the same reasons. I wanted a companion for my Golden Retriever who is also my service dog. He had gained a lot of weight during a period where I was sick with my MS. I decided to go to our local shelter and found my baby Taz. He had a great personality and got along well with my Golden "Levi" . I too did not know what kind of dog he was until my BF figured it out. All we knew was that he was hound/terrier mixed. Little did I know he was Basenji or even what a Basenji was. I learned quickly. lol.. He too likes to chew a lot and we have to put everything out of his reach, especially cell phones (from experience) He won't mess with the remote control though. He does like to table surf and will take anything from gloves to mail to cellphones off the tables. He is a very loveable dog though. He loves to be in my lap and is a leaner. You will probably find she is very cat like as it is a trait of basenji's. My Taz likes to lean up against me when i am getting ready in the bathroom or when I am standing around. He is very partial to me though he loves my BF (not sure why) but he doesn't sit with him unless I am out of the room. I have to put baby gates up to keep him from going into the kitchen or from going upstairs to table surf in the bathroom or bedrooms or keep the doors shut. You will find baby gates very helpful. Also you will find that keeping lots and lots of chew toys around will be very helpful to keep her attention off of things she shouldn't chew. We use Nylabones for powerful chewers and they love pigs ears and will take them a while to chew them. Kongs are great as well because they can chew them and not destroy them as they tend to do to other softer plastic toys. I have also found he loves tennis balls and won't destroy them as well. He is fully crate trained but will sleep in the bed with me when my BF is not here. They are very playful as well. Females do tend to try to be more dominant but being a dominant person can offset that problem. Here are some pics of my Taz and you can see they look very much alike. Taz's tail is curled but not nearly as much as a full Basenji. His ears also tip more like a terrier as well. He sheds very little though when I brought him home he was shedding very bad and I don't know if it was stress related to him being at the shelter or if it was just his diet. I feed him purina pro plan sensitve stomach and skin formula which consist of salmon, brewers rice and oatmeal which are very healty for them and keeps their fur shiney and their skin healthy as well as their stomachs. You will find though the longer you have her you will fall in love with Basenjis. I hope you enjoy her and have lots of fun.

Thanks for all the replies!! I am twenty years old, a college student, and live in Columbus, Ohio. I just lost my dog Riley about a month ago. She was a Chiarat. Something bad in my life happened, and I had to move. I live with my Mom now, and she is very allergic to everything, and sadly she was allergic to Riley. I had to give her up at the local Humane Scociety, but don't think bad of me on that. Two weeks later she was adopted by a wonderful family, and the lady that did the filing for Riley gave me her cell phone number to contact her at anytime, and kept me updated. It was really hard. But I am so happy that she found a loving home. I decided to get a basenji, because of well of course my mom, and I've done a lot of research, and I believe that this breed will suit me well. But now the good news. My pup (haven't decided his name yet) is about three weeks old and is in Caldwell, Texas. He has a couple brothers and sisters, and lives on a 600 acre farm for now. I am flying to Texas with my mom to pick him up the first week of February. I don't believe in having my pup shipped to me. That's just my opinion. Here is a pic of him, his momma, and poppa. The breeder that I found has been amazing. Every question I have asked she has responded right away.
my pup.
momma named Dandee with her old litter
poppa named Poker.

You do know that B's aren't hypoallergenic..?
The pup sure looks cute! -
I was told that they are great for people who are allergic to dogs. A Vet even told me that. lol, and thanks! The breeder is going to send me more pics today!!

I hope it works out for you.. I know a lot of allergic people.. and they ALL react to my B.. And he has a very, very short coat and (almost) doesn't shed..
And Vets shouldn't say such stupid things.. (I'm studying to become one ;))

Haha me too! This is my first year. I hope so too. I couldn't take that again :(. My mom had a teacup poodle, and she has to reaction to him, hopefully my pup will get the same reaction!

Yes, I hope so too.. It wouldn't be fair for the pup to be brought to a shelter..
Can't you visit a breeder near by with your mom so you can see if she has a reaction or not? -
Yes we are going to. The breeder that I have contacted said anytime is fine with her, and it wouldn't be fair to him at all… I will never do that again. Trust me.

Good to hear you are being a responsible buyer.
Now you are going to get all these questions about the parents of your pup being Fanconi tested etc.
I hope for sure they are! -
I did ask her, and she said recently she has just tested the parents with the strips, because when she tried to they were no longer taking new testies, but she promised me as soon as she does I will be notified. Also if I have to I will get him tested. He also has a health gaurantee too. I also asked her about the parents health, and what not. He also has his dewclaws removed.

Is this the breeder that has 3 litters? If so, these pups are not AKC (American Kennel Club) registered. And I would wonder if they have been DNA tested for Fanconi? You can read about DNA testing for Fanconi at www.basenji.org
-
She has two litters. He is ACA and CKC registered. I have also read up everthing about the disease. He also I believe can be AKC registered. I have talked with her for awhile now, and I am confident in her…

Good to hear that you have researched Basenji health concerns and done your homework to verify that DNA testing has been done… As others here can tell you, Fanconi is a horrible affliction and with the DNA test there never has to be another born with the potential to get Fanconi. There are now over 2300 Basenjis tested world wide and listed on the public database, a credit to breeders to the future of our breed.
