Atchooo…....

  • How do you know if our pups are sick? Yesterday the temperatures dipped down into the 20's. We bundled him up and took him to the dog park but he didn't seem himself later in the afternoon. Do they get sick like humans? Do I call the vet right away? When should I be concerned? Here are Mick's symptoms:
    Semi loose stool
    Greenish hue stool
    Sneezing
    Sleepy

He's still eating well and ran around a little today with my kids. Please let me know your thoughts.

  • How is he today?
If he is still the same, I would make an appt with the vet on mon.

  • Dogs do not get colds like humans… but the loose stool, sleepy and greenish stool could be a tummy upset...

Sneezing is usually do to allergies, unless it is possible that he might have a fox tail? Is he pawing at his nose?

He is NOT pawing at his nose but now that you mention it I was cleaning behind the television yesterday and he was all up in my business. He would not stop playing with all the dust bunnies. I think that could be it.

  • Is he doing better?

  • Ok so here's the update. His stool is much better today. He has not sneezed since the first day and she seems playful. Boy did he sleep all afternoon and night yesterday. It really worried me. It seemed like he couldn't get warm enough although he was warm to the touch. He was under a fur blanket and laying on my husbands tummy for most of the day. Is this normal in the winter months? Also I have another question. It is clear to me that Mick is NOT fond of the cold. He shivers the moment he walks out the door. Would you recommend I get him a puffer jacket with a hood, snowsuit, or heavy winter jacket? I have bought from sitstay.com but they don't have heavy duty jackets only fleece. Thanks!

  • You can definitely try booties and/or a warmer jacket. Shadow goes out to do his business in winter and comes back in-that's it. Twice per day after he eats, other than that he won't go out and he will lay on the heat vent as soon as he hears the furnace come on. Some Basenji's deal with the cold better than others.

  • Well we did try the boots. He walks so funny and tries to chew them off as soon as we put them on. We paid $30.00 for them too. Yikes! Maybe I bought the wrong size and they are pinching his feet. I don't know. Its so hard to judge what is comfortable on him. I will however get a heavier jacket with a hood. I think that will be the way to go. Thanks!

  • WE have fleese lined raincoats for the dogs walks, and Sally Wallis sweaters for the house.
My b's live in them in the winter.

  • We layer for cold. A Fido fleece with a horse blanket type coat over top. This seems to keep them quite toasty.

@Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

@serenjane My Kembe had the freckles on her neck - more pronounced in summer months w/ the sun and also as she aged. I use to call her my little 🦒 giraffe. 😂

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284
