    Haven't read here for the last couple of weeks. I miss you all and all the B stories.

    FYI, my good friend had a grandbaby that was losing his battle with AML cancer in the last 6 months. He lost his battle last Friday. Rey was just over 2 years old. For those of you that believe, send prayers for Rey-Rey.

    Last Sunday evening Ty got "skunked". He ran in the doggie door, wiped his head on everything, including the NEW carpet, and basically stunk up the entire house.
    We have de-skunked the house and Ty's body, but Ty's head still stinks (especially his right ear). We tried Baby Shampoo so as to not hurt his eyes, but that is only marginally effective.

    Any suggestions?

    Tomato juice soak - then wash Ty off with shampoo again. I think the acid in the tomato neutralizes and breaks down the stink oil. I had to giggle at your predicament though, sorry. It has happened to my ole boy, Rocky years ago.

    My prayers are with the baby's family. It's hard to grasp the loss of such a little life. May God bless Rey-Rey's soul.

    We use the formula invented by a retired scientist from Fermi lab…..

    1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
    1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
    1 teaspoon liquid soap

    Wet the dog, and work the formula through their fur. Leave the mixture set on the dog for four or five minutes, and then rinse thoroughly. Try to use cool water as warm water opens the pores and the oil is then introduced into the skin and harder to remove. This formula works great but you can't get it in to their eyes. I was afraid to use it on the carpet so I used a "Natures Miracle" product. It took several cleanings. My clothes and the dog bed were washed in the peroxide/baking soda solution and they are odor free.

    The formula snorky998 has is the same one I use in the grooming shop. Just becareful around his head.

    I cannot imagine committing to buy a puppy without seeing the animal and if possible the sire and dam. OTOH, a rescue (or adoption of an older dog) is a different thing. My last two Basenjis came to me sight unseen, and turned out to be wonderful dogs, but the breeders I got them from wanted to place their dogs in an experienced Basenji home, and I only paid the cost of getting the dogs to me. One came by air, one was personally transported to me by his breeder. If she hadn't been happy with what she found I expect she would have taken him back with her when she left. I also had to commit to return him if ever I couldn't keep him. Good breeders care about where their dogs end up.

    @kembe - Very True Kembe, here is a link on looking for a responsible breeder. https://bconc.org/finding-breeders-red-flags There are many scammers out there, don't fall for one.. or a person that is not a responsible breeder.

    @wizard: Ah, but that was the old names for these hybrids. Now the PC term is anything with "oodle" at the end. No no no. If we're going to be PC, the correct PC term is "Designer Breed." Because you don't want to leave out the "ugles" of the world (pugles & the like), and it sound so fancy, like a dog Paris Hilton would have. I love it when people assume my girls are some unique & exotic (mixed breed) designer dogs, and they are always dissappointed when I tell them "No, its just a unique & exotic purebred primitive dog that's been around much much much longer than designer dogs." I actually had somebody at the dog park ask me if they were basenjis one day, and I replied Yes they are. They then asked "So they're miniatures?" I said "No, they are both within standard, just at the very small end of the standard." They insisted again they were toy basenjis. Whatever. :rolleyes:

    People need to only read about rescue dogs and how they got to where they are to understand why we are so outspoken about breeding (or as the case may be, not breeding) Believe me it is not and easy decision when you are trying to do it right… it is costly and a labor of love... pure and simple... I bred my first litter only to find 2 days before the pups were born that my bitch's dam had Fanconi... can you image what I felt? Can you understand why we are so against anyone that bred this year without testing? I went forward with a different approach only to get temperaments that I didn't like... I made the hard choice and did not take that line forward other then to collect the males for possible use in the future if I then had a line with excellent temperaments that also prove to "throw" those temperaments... and it was not that they were nasty, but just a bit to strong for my taste... Understand that every breeder if you are a responsible breeder makes very, very hard choices... and the choice to NOT breed it the worst... and the most difficult... which is why we ask? What does your Basenji have to offer the breed?
