Check out Camp Basenji also… they Fanconi test their rescues. I honestly would never take another basenji without knowing the fanconi status.

Hi Annie,
Will this be your first basenji or are you already familiar with the breed?
If it's a first, this is a good time to read and learn as much as you can possibly can about the breed and most importantly make sure it is a good fit for your family. Responsible breeders are generally happy to have you over to meet their dogs so you can really get a feel for them. They are committed to the pups they breed for their lifetimes so finding a good fit is really really important. They won't let you make an uninformed decision about this 14-16 year commitment. And likewise they won't put you on their list before getting to know you
I notice you were inquiring about getting a basenji for Christmas (and possibly as a surprise). I have two suggestions/comments about that: First, if you're interested in a puppy it is rather unlikely that you will find a litter that is ready to go home at exactly that time. This is, however, a good time to look around, if even a little late, as we are in basenji breeding season. The second issue with a Christmas B puppy is that it might not give your husband the opportunity to meet/spend time with basenjis before deciding to get one. They are definitely strange, I think, but in a GREAT way! Some homework

This is where you verify health testing:
Be sure to read about Fanconi syndrome on the BCOA website. All litters born after July 2007 should have at least one parent DNA tested clear.

Thank you Mauigirl for the advice and yes this would be our first basenji and we have already done our research on the breed and we know about their noises they make and and all health information. It wouldnt have to be a puppy even just a older pup! thank you very much though for your advice.
If you have any more please contact me! -
Would you consider a rescue basenji?

A guy has listed one named gumby on www.puppyfinder.com that is located in waverly, ohio. I am in Chillicothe. where are you in southern ohio?

A basenji is a 14-16 year commitment, so driving a few extra miles to get a dog from a well known and well respected breeder is a good investment for your future! I recommend you call and visit CarolAnne, I understand she has really nice dogs.

i am in waverly, i will look on puppyfinder again but i didnt see it the first time.

I strongly agree with Anne and urge you to consider breeders or rescues that may be a bit of drive but are responsible and will work with you to get a well tempered, healthy pet. Basenjis live into their teens and it is important that the dog you choose will be a good fit.

Ok I live in a quite neighborhood in a town called Waverly, Ohio I am married for 17 years, i have two children ages 14 and 9 girl and a boy. i also have a miniature schnauzer 4 years old. i am as of right now a stay at home mom, just finished school, looking for a job. looking for a young basenji, a rescue perhaps!

Rescues are not free either. Vaccinations, the spay, any treatment all costs money. I am not sure a breeder will charge you much more for a retired dog than a rescue would for any dog.
Why do you want a Basenji specifically? I know you said you wanted to get it for your husband but have you been owned by one before, has he?
I am just curious, I wouldn't want you to get a dog thinking one thing and then totally realizing there is a lot more to them then "silent", "non-shedding" and small.
I would recommend you contact BRAT. I have a 10-mo old female that will be posted soon. You will need to have a home visit as well as answer some questions.
