• Hi everyone…my C3PO has been with us for about 3 weeks. We changed their food gradually from Eukanuba to more organic healthy food over a few days. He initially had some diarrhea which I attributed to the gradual food change & the it went away after a day or two. Now he's got it again..should I be concernd??:o

    Help!

My Topaz is doing fine with the food. She hasn't had any diarrhea at all!!

  • Our Basenji Max has a very sensitive stomach. He has an irritable bowel our vet says that a lot of Basenji's do. He gets diarrhea with just about any change in environment, weather or food. The diarrhea can last several days. Just make sure he's got plenty of water.
    I hope this helps,
    Emily

  • what type of food are you feeding now? (brand) it could be a result of the new food, could be an intolerance to an ingredient, could be stress, could be c3po ate something he wasn't supposed to, could be alot of things. I'd give it a few days (if C3PO isn't a puppy) and if it's not cleared up, call the vet. if C3PO is a puppy, I'd head to the vet sooner.

  • thanks everyone!

Jessi76-C3PO is 3yrs old & we've been feedingh im Merricks organic adult food. He had the runs for like 2/3 days & then it went away. Then suddenly it came back.

  • We feed Max IAMS Mini Chunks. He does well with it.

  • How is C3PO doing? I read this thread late, but if he's not okay try going to the vet and asking for a broad spectrum wormer. The one that Nala had was a one-time banana smelling (and I guess tasting) one. My vet told me sometimes giardia, etc. can be missed on the fecal test and it doesn't hurt to worm them (provided the rest of the exam checks out okay). That helped Nala immensely. She gained weight and hasn't had diarrhea at all.

I totally agreee with Pat - the vet should know what's going on. Also the fact that the diarrhoea is black is a cause for concern, in my opinion.

Copper, my oldest, has always had a sensitive stomach and would get diarrhea out of the blue all the time, so badly that he would have blood dripping from his rear. It freaked me out the first few times it happened! The vet always tried to prescribe an antibiotic but it never helped. The way I always got rid of it was to cook a pound of ground beef (rinsed), mix with a cup of cooked white rice, a cup of cottage cheese, and a cup of plain yogurt. You feed it for about 3-4 days (I always gave him about a cup and a half a day) and then start introducing their dry food back in. A friend on another forum gave me this concoction years ago and it worked perfectly for years. Almost two years ago he got diarrhea and any time I would stop feeding the mixture it would come back. I finally consulted a holistic vet and she said I could continue feeding the mixture but needed to add some veggies to it for fiber, or I could change his dry food. She said to avoid chicken, wheat, soy, and corn. She also recommended feeding a probiotic/prebiotic several times a week in addition to two other supplements, Gastriplex and Moducare (both by Thorne). He's been on Taste of the Wild now, which is grain free (I buy the fish variety but they also have a bison/venison as well as a lamb), and and has had no problems. I'm very careful about the ingredients in the treats I give him now and have had NO diarrhea problems since changing his diet, which is absolutely wonderful! Here are the links for what I use: http://tinyurl.com/27jaroe http://tinyurl.com/2adwtqn- 1 capsule 2x per day http://tinyurl.com/276rn24 - 1 capsule 1x per day http://tinyurl.com/2g47lsp - 1 capsule about 3x per week (I give it on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) Good luck!!

Heres some info from the Merck Vet Manual about Giardia. http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/21300. I think that yearly checks for giardia is a little much. Like the manual says we usually look for giardia when a young dog comes in with diarrhea. We collect a stool sample (for Giardia a fresh sample is preferred) set up a float and also a direct. I actually just looked at a giardia sample taken from a puppy and Doctor Mark said its also hard to find the protozoa because after exposed to light for an amount of time the giardia loose its mobility and is hard to tell the difference from regular cells in the stool. The manual says that treatment with fenbendazole (panacur) is used this also deworms for a number of different zoonotic parasites. Which you should discuss with your vet when doing boosters and every couple of week check ups. According to the CAPC your vet should "Conduct fecal examinations two or four times during the first year of life and one to two times per year in adults, depending on patient health and lifestyle factors." http://www.capcvet.org/recommendations/guidelines.html

I was told that if it is an intestinal bug, giving an anti-diarrheal upon onset will slow the bodys natural ability to evacuate the nasty virus, and the 'bug' can in fact regroup in the intestines and come back even stronger. Fluids are key. Dehydration can happen so fast. After the diarrhea slows, try feeding active culture yougart (I use Activia)to re-introduce the 'good' bacteria back into digestive tract. This along with the soft boiled diet and Gatorade or Pedialyte in the water, seems to do the trick with my older male. Glad to hear Topper if feeling better.
