Gift Exchange: Basenji Buddies Summer 2008

Basenji Talk
  • Hahahaha, that's too funny; I bet Zaire was happy :)

I understand this all too well. I work in a dog bakery and Shango comes to work with me. Everyone comes in and he plays the role so well- "Oh! He's not getting any treats? Can I buy one for him?" Hahahahhaha he's such a lucky dog on days we work!

  • I am sure he never gets any treats from his Daddy, haha!!!!

  • My basenji buddy gifts were shipped out today!

As a side note, the place I shipped from wouldn't let me add any notes to the package. Sooo…I will just explain the gifts Dallas sent on here after my buddy has received them :) I don't want to ruin the surprise beforehand!

  • We got ours today. I got a Navy pen and bumper sticker, and Medjai got some great new nylabones, cookies, plush ball, and some other great odds and ends. There was also a great little booklet that came with the package written by Medjai's basenji buddy.

I have found one problem with this package. It make mine seem so small, as I didn't send that much or with a cute little note, but Medjai's new buddy should love their package as much as Medjai loves those types of things.

  • Please post some photos!

  • Our package arrived the other day from Florida. In addition to some delicious goodies, EL D received a new collar (I especially like the little allegators) …

Very snazzy new collar. Looks like El D knew he was looking good, he strikes quite a pose!

  • A great collar for a handosme boy!

    Wow! What a handsome dog!!

  • I got all my stuff packaged and ready to go..It'll be out in the mail tomorrow hopefully!

  • For Soulmate - just got my student loan money and research stipend today (I just love being a poor college student:) ). so please forgive me for the lateness of the package. I'll be sending it out end of this week.

  • don't worry, I am also a bit late. Beegin loves Post-its? interesting B-hobby…

    regards,
    esther

  • MacPack (Topper, Eddie & Nicky) got their gifts today, woo-hoo!
Great stuffed toys (snatched from my hands immediately!), pizzle sticks, and really yummy dog treats…lots and lots to last a long time (or one day if Eddie had his druthers). And a treat for the humans too, thanks Wizard!

    This is fun!

  • THis is really a lot of fun – I've enjoyed reading what others have received.
Pity the poor folks who couldn't participate. :p

  • We are preparing for the Winter Holidays Basenji Buddies Gift Exchange. Details to follow in another thread.

  • I'm excited to do this again!

Shango and I sent ours out a few days ago so we're anxiously waiting until our basenji buddy gets their package,

Shango hasn't recieved his gift yet so we're anxiously waiting for that too! We look forward to come home and find a package on the door step. We can't wait!

  • So I came home this morning and there was a package waiting for us at the door! It must have come yesterday after I'd left for the day.

We hurried to open it up because we were so excited; boy did Jill and Tosca spoil my boy, Shango!

He was given tons of delicious treats and really great toys including an awesome stuffed bat that he already loves and a really great rubber ball that can hold some of his treats in it for him to hunt out. He also was given a great bandana to wear, which will be perfect for him to wear next weekend when we go do a dog walk!

I can't THANK YOU enough; you were more than generous to my Shango and he LOVES everything he's been given.

Here are pics for proof; these are all taken just minutes after opening the gifts. He played with everything immediately! THANK YOU SO MUCH JILL AND TOSCA!!! :)

Tosca, you should be getting yours any day now! ;)

Thanks guy, this has been a blast. We can wait for the next one!!!

  • I am so glad you and Shango liked the gifts! I am glad the stuffed bat worked as well, I tried to find a real Batman one, but no luck. Thank you for posting the pictures too, its so much fun to see him playing with the toys…and the bandana looks adorable :)

I agree, this was a lot of fun, and Tosca is very excited to get her gift too!

The bat is awesome and he's been playing with it all day! Really, you were very kind. Thank you so much for the gifts. Do you have camera capabilities? I'd love to see pictures of how Tosca likes her gifts! Heck, we'd love to see pictures of Tosca! :)

Mailed her gifts last week so they'll be there any day this week! Sit tight, Tosca!

  • Dallas received his package from LiveWWSD on Friday afternoon. He was so excited that he didn't want to wait for mommy to run to get scissors. He started pawing at the box! Haha. Anyhoo, here are the photos I took:

Checking out the Cheetah Stuffed animal…

Got him! Dallas certainly loves to hunt stuffed Cheetahs :p

Pawing at the cackling witch toy!

Shaking her around a bit. LOL

Sitting nice & pretty for a sweet potato treat! He, like Zaire, will actually LISTEN when I whip one of these babies out :p Thanks Daniel! These treats are a godsend!!! :)

Dallas loved the gifts & I have already put the sticker on my car which reads: "Wag more. Bark less." Haha. I appreciate everything, as does Dallas! He hasn't let that darn Cheetah out of his sight!

I can't wait for the next exchange!!!! :D

  • WOW I can't believe the post got that package across the country so fast, AMAZING.

So Glad Dallas enjoyed his gifts. This was SO MUCH FUN :)

Those Sweet Potato treats are my secret weapon when Zaire is refusing to listen. :D

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!
