Test Strips anyone?

  • hey there– it has been a long time writing. i last wrote when we thought isis (our 6yr old B) had signs of fanconi back in Feb-March(??)

it was a real shock... when we realized she had it. but things are stable now mentally... and wanted to get back here :)

one of our neighbors here has a cute little (3 month old) B named Loki... and it got me thinking about people who may want to test thier Bs for fanconi.

i have test strips here if anyone wants them (in the Burbank, CA area) maybe we can meet at a dog park? Had the strips since March, so they may not be okay any more (not sure how long they last).

    just putting it out there!

  • They only last for 6 months so they are not good any longer, but what a nice offer…... and if your neighbors with a baby B should have their pup DNA tested for Fanconi (unless the parents have already been tested, hopefully so)...with any luck they will have no need for test trips...

Fingers cross that she is doing OK on the protocol....

  • I will begin test stripping very soon, Sahara will be 3 in Jan. She has tested Probably Affected, does anyone know where I can order them online cheap! Thanks!

  • Try Drugstore.com they have about the best prices for most things… make sure that you get Glucose test strips and not just ones for ketone, many of them come with both on the strip. Since they do not last long, best if you can find them to only get 50 at a time... and since they don't last, best to test a few days in a row....

  • How often should you test strip? We just rescued Cammie 10 weeks ago. She was tested at the shelter on 7/1/08 and at the vet on 7/12/08. I have no way of knowing whether or not her dna has ever been submitted since she was rescued. I've thought about doing the dna test.

You should do the DNA test…. then you know if you have to continue on and do the "monthly" strip test if she were to come back as affected. I am sure that she was not submitted prior... please read about basenji health at www.basenjihealth.org

  • Where can you buy test strips? (I've never bought them before) A regular grocery store or someplace like Wal-Mart or RiteAid?

    Lori

  • Yes or you can buy them on line too… You will want Urine Test strips for Glucose in Urine.

  • well, now that Tayda is on the protocol I've got this bottle of strips that I won't need anymore… I only used about 5 of them so its just about full. I can mail them to who ever wants them.... I can mail ~5 each to a bunch of different people. You could email me your address to ms.shell.tsai at gmail dot com and i'll drop em in the mail. It's on me!

  • What a nice thing to do for folks who have yet to test strip their b's.
Sharing the strips, letting them see its not a big deal is wonderful.
    Thank you.

  • thanks, i really want to help other people who are maybe scared to strip, or don't know which ones to get or whatever other reason (i've been thinking about WHY it took me so long) to just get at least a few….

I may start another thread about so it can have its own thread....

  • Tayda, if you have free test strips to give away, I'll gladly take them! You can write to me off-forum at ZenGrrrl@aol.com.

    Thanks!

    Lori

@jinxed_1980: What is OFA? I hope this is a good thing you guys sound excited about it. :) And OFA is the place were all Fanconi test results are posted. Information on Fanconi is www.basenjihealth.org Anyone breeding needs to be testing their Basenjis "before" breeding….. there is no excuse to ever produce another Fanconi Affected pup

@JustJunie: Hi, I am new. I am owned by 3 basenji's, one of which was just adopted. I was told that he has that disease and that I need to have a blood test every 6 months. Do you think this is the one that costs $60? I would like to take as good of care as I can for Banjo and I really do not understand all of the ins and outs. I was told to feed him bananas to keep his potassium up, but alas he doesn't seem interested in them. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Hello! I was hoping we would see you on this site!! Thanks so much for adopting Banjo there!! He has quite a long thread (in the Rescue/Adoption forum) of admirers. We would love to see pics of the gentleman. :)

And remember everyone, they really do go bad, so please do not use them past the date….. if there are some of you that live close or even you could do it by mail, you might think about sharing the strips instead of just tossing them
