Bath soap

Basenji Talk

  • Lately EL D has taken to chasing chipmunks up pine trees (he tries to climb up after them) and comes back with pine pitch on his fur. I know this isn't going to harm him at all and that it will grow out eventually, but I would like to get it off. Can anyone suggest a suitable soap?

  • I've heard pbutter or baby oil will work.

  • Like dissolves like, so vegetable oil, baby oil, or peanut butter will all help to get it out. Then you can just wash with a good quality dog shampoo.

  • And butter works…. .. I had this happen at a show and the only thing available was butter..gggg.... and then a bath... of course they really wanted to just "eat" the butter

  • How funny that you say butter, when I was typing my list I almost put coconut oil which actually has about the same consistency as butter. Solid at room temp but melts easily at body temperature. I just figured that I am the only weirdo with a whole container of it in my garage.

  • Actually….I have some coconut oil too. Two giant jars. I cook with it alot. And regarding sappy stuff stuck in fur, this would be why Riley had a dime sized bald spot on his rump recently. I gave the sap about 10 days before deciding I would just try to pull it out in strips, and guess what the hair came too. I basically waxed Riley's bum. He was really good about it. It grew back in really fast. Next time I'll reach for my coconut oil ;)

  • Hadn't thought about it for cooking. It makes great soap which is why I have it, I do a soap making lab with my Chem kids.

  • Hmmm, I always use rubbing alcohol when mine get pitch-y. I put a little on a cosmetic pad {or swipe some alcohol wipes from my kids' Diabetes supplies}
    and rub it off. They come clean and there's no oil left on the hair.

  • Thanks for he tips - I'll try them tonight.

    Hahahaha… Oh what a great mental picture...like Riley was at a day spa or something. :D

  • Hope he got a mani pedi while you were at it! ;)

  • I tried the vegetable oil, peanut butter, and butter but EL D managed to wiggle too much and lick everything off before I could work it into the pine pitch.
    However, since I was out of rubbing alcohol, I used witch hazel instead and that really did the trick - and it must not have any odor 'cuz EL D didn't even pay attention to it.

    Good call, I use Witch Hazel on the kids when they scratch eachother up while playing. Both Zaire and Charlie don't seem to mind it. I have never had to try it on the roommates min-pin as Charlie and Zaire don't roughhouse with him as hard as they do with eachother. :)

    I can't listen to that, it would wake my girl up and well... I'm not into a "sing along" just now. ;) I will say that many canines howl and yodel and bay (at the moon, whenever a fire truck passes, etc.). I'm not certain that any one breed is distinctive enough to have a sound all their own, but many a proud owner would probably assert so.

    I have a cat that will walk around in the rain, she likes it. :eek: But if it is thundering, she heads for her cat door in the garage, hates thunder. My Basenji, Sahara hates wet grass, but is better about getting a bath now that I give her a treat when we are done. We carried her out in the boat, with her lifepreserver on and she liked it Ok. She is getting better but won't go outside to potty when it is raining unless Mom goes with her on a leash and an umbrella. Hence, her name Africian Queen Sahara!!!!!!:D

    I also find Shadow Hummph's when he is picked up-but he does want to be picked up and cuddled. I'll say uppies(yeah, I know) and if he wants up he'll walk right into my arms but still Hummph. The girls don't make a sound at all.
