• My poor baby got chiggers from running through the woods this past Saturday. We give her her Frontline monthly and it didn't stop those chiggers!

Anybody know how I can help her itching stop? 😕

  • I would take her to the Vet, sounds like she needs more that a dose of benadryl…..

  • Weird. I called the vet. Vet says that dogs usually don't get chiggers? She probably has a staff infection. However; my DH, me, and Mya were all in the same forest on Saturday and we are ALL itching. DH and I know that we have chigger bites but really can't tell on Miss Thing cuz she's so furry. But they are red just like ours and she was ALOT closer to the ground than we were.

  • Hmmm….I wonder if the same tricks for humans work on dogs. When I used to get chigger bites in GA, we would put either bacon grease or nail polish on them. Both would suffocate the chigger. Seems to me that the bacon grease would all get licked off, and the nail polish I would be afraid of them licking.

  • I think a vet visit is also a good idea.
Then you will know what to do next time.

Well, nothing can be diagnosed without a visit, so I hope the vet set up an appointment!

Let us know what you find out.

  • Good news. It was chiggers. I gave her a Benadryl in the morning and one in the evening and that relieved the itching.

She's doing much better now and they're almost completely gone.

Now, I only need to take her to her vet to have her hip checked out. 😞

  • What happened to her hip?

  • @tanza:

    What happened to her hip?

I'm not sure exactly. We were in Colorado at the end of June. We were walking along and she yelped and pulled her back leg up. We assumed she had stepped on somethig but couldn't find anything in her paw.

She has done this several times since then and I can only think that it's got to be her hip. When it happens we kind of move her leg gently up and down and then it's better and off she goes!

  • It could be her patellas more then her hip, could be slipping out of the socket.

I don't remember where you got her from, but if from a responsible breeder you might want to ask if any of her line have had luxating patellas.

Thank you for the information. I will ask the breeder if they know and then do some research prior to taking her to the vet too.
